From a former quake addict, the one thing I can suggest is to include a lot of HEAVILY TESTED multiplayer maps.

For 1vs1, the maps need to have key armor, weapons, and item placements. Something that allows the player to find a nice flow of the map. You want players to have a variety of maps too. Quake 3 was a great game, but only had a few tournament worthy maps that were played for years. Luckly ID released some new tourmanet maps that were actually used. Allowing players to make their own map is also very crucial. Look at the map called Blood Run (ZTN3Tourney1) from Quake 3. A perfect example of a tournament map created by a fan.

You guys already have great gameplay, and promise spectating, demo recording, voting features, and a very configurable game. Please don't let the community down with the map selection.
