I hope this helps some of you guys who are getting that application error when trying to launch the game.
Use Painkiller CD3 instead of CD1 when launching the game. Even though CD3 does not have autoplay, that fixed it for me. It's odd that they didn't label it as a play disc, but it worked like a charm.
