I posted these questions before the forums were troubled and never got to see any responses:
1. What's the point of increasing the Armour above 3? Is this more for characters with low strength? Will this reduce their penalties?
2. Will having a higher magic skill improve the regeneration time of spells, mana, rune stone etc etc etc?

*1. What's the point of increasing the Armour above 3? Is this more for characters with low strength? Will this reduce their penalties?*
increaseing it will let you use better armor as you level up and find new stuff and you also need 3 in leather in order to start useing chain in which you need 3 also to use Plate
as for your second question i have no idea i never played with spells in the demo i found the melee more fun.

I posted this earlier but got deleted.
I think the question has to do more with:
"Is it worth it to put more points on Light armor than just 3."
I think the option exists for character balancing reasons. Would a thief or Mage typically wear full scale body armor? I believe the purpose is to provide classes that would typically only wear light armor an ability to maximize the protection the armor provides. Just my 2 cents.

yes you need to keep increaseing it as you level
Example
light leather (say 3 points)
leather (6 points or higher)
rugged leather (12 or higher)
reinforced light leather (22 or higher)
reinforced leather (44 or higher)
reinforced rugged leather (88 or higher)
embosed light Leather (100 or higher)
*so on*
keep in mind please this just an EXAMPLE and is in no way how it will be
and you can use armor at any level but to not have peniltys you need higher skill, any penilty over 10 makes it worthless to you as it's to high to use
also like to add some class's will be restricked to types of armor i beleave so say a rogue/mage/adapt get leather, fighters get mail plate *this just a guess thow*

Balth, i don't think there are restrictions for anything, just cost advantage/disadvantage. i also imagine that you are right on about how the system works. even if you are a fighter, you aren't necessarily going to want to increase all the armor classes to high levels, since less in one type means more in another (whether it be combat, armor, magic, or whatever).

besides medium armor advancement being a stepping stone to heavy armor, what advantages would there be in only using medium armor over heavier armor?

Medium is likely to be cheaper and probably easier to find as loot? There may also be movement restrictions on the heavier armours?
Those are just guesses. I'd hope they do add some purpose to medium armour, otherwise you'll only ever see folk in none, Light or Heavy at the lower levels. If the levels really are going to go into the thousands then I'd expect everyone will be wearing Heavy then. :-/

well it will most certainly be cheaper, that goes without saying. as for moving restrictions, that's what the penalty means i think, at least in part, then obviously it goes away after a few levels which means that better movement is probably not an issue. however, some people, such as perhaps an archer character, might choose to invest the points something else instead, figuring they don't need as much protection as what heavy armor provides, since they shouldn't be in much melee combat, but they want more then light armor in case they do get into melee. and for all we know, there may be race restrictions on armor..but that isn't in keeping with there ideal of not tying someone down

lets say you are like me, and avoid heavy armor in lieu of lighter armor. by not getting heavy armor, i have saved points that i can commit to dual wield. perhaps my class gives me a discount on medium armor. even if no discount is given, think of this senario:
Full Plate: base AC 6
Some Kind Of Ill Magical Medium Armor of Evisceration (11): base AC 4, +3 to AC, +10 damage, protection from overusage of the word evisceration (12).
in effect, my cheaper armor (in terms of skill points used) is better than the heavy armor.
of course there will be nasty heavy armor as well, but there might be mods more suited to my fast dexterous dual-wielder on med. or light armor, as opposed to the big clumsy heavy plate. not to mention class considerations.
but who knows?
