i posted this already, but as we all kno, many posts eviscerated (7).
start---run---dxdiag---click on sound tab---change hardware acceleration to OFF (all the way to the left)
problem solved.
side note: having this disabled may cause audio glitches in other applications (DVD soft, AVI/MPEG sof, even mp3s if they are long enough) so remember to switch it back on after play or if experiencing trouble.
