I have the same problem with menu artifacts, 9600SE on AMD64. Also some textures in the game go bad.
I enabled fast writes and have not had the problem again. Yet.

Mobo is up to date! I tried the fast writes on and off same thing persists. I guess i should be happy at least im getting in the game. Still kinda wierd though!
This is the only game i have ever had artifacts!

You often get artifacts when your monitor is acting strangely, outdated DirectX or overheating.
We can rule out the monitor one. You´ve tried all video drivers? Do you install/unInstall them correctly?
There are so many things that might cause this.
If this only happens with Painkiller, it might work if you disable certain video options. I´ve heard about graphical problems with the 6800 and Anastropic Filtering. (or was it AA?)

Some people here had problems that resulted from AMDs Cool&Quiet technology. Your problems don't sound alike, but maybe you should give it a try and disable C&Q in your bios to see if it makes a difference.

With AMD64, I suggest /NoExecute=AlwaysOff in the boot.ini file. I have had some problems with other settings and certain programs.
