I installed PainKiller the other day, I have a pc with 250 gb hd, 1024 mb ram, pentium 4 3.2 Ghz, but an onboard video card which is Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset. So anyway i installed painkiller and when i try to open the game i get the message:
"ERROR: could not Initialize DirectX9 Renderer"
Is there anything I can do? aside from get a new video card i hope since i hardly have any money. Somebody please help, I've been looking forward to playing this.

This is probably because you need a video card, or you havenīt installed DX 9.0c. :)

or...
get a video card :/.

Fixed your post. ;)

I'v got the same problem. I have directX 9 but the message keeps popping up. Could it be anything besides a video chip? If not, How or where do I get a new video chip?

What are your computer specs?

If you already have a video card, try the following.
1) ReDownload and reInstall DirectX 9.0c
2) UnInstall Service Pack 2 if youīre using it, but you should keep the setup file if you donīt want to reDownload SP2 again

canto86

Ive already downloaded that like 6 times. and what do you mean by UnInstall Service Pack 2?

he means if u install sp2 uninstall sp2 if u r running windows xp but if u r running xp and have sp2 install if i were u i wouldn't even uninstall sp2 because if will cause more problems then u r having right now and what video card do u have

what r your pc specs

I could hardly understand your post Death666, but if I understand correctly, you didnīt understand me correctly. :p

I mean that he should unInstall SP2 if it is installed already, and check if DirectX will work after SP2 is gone. If it works, then donīt install SP2 again. Iīm not having any problems, and Iīm not using SP2. ;)

(but might be different for others...)

Try that if you have SP2. :)

I dont have SP2. I dont know what kind of video chip I have but I just had it replaced about a month ago. So what could it be that is causing this.

What are your specs?
If youīre unsure how to find them:
1) Go to Start > Run
2) Type dxdiag and click "Ok"

There you can see every info about your computer. To see info about the video card, click the "Display" tab and on the left side of the window is the info about the video card.

u need a new video card either a ati or nvidia because u need at least 64 mb to even run painkiller

Thatīs right.
Isnīt time to stop selling clueless people a computer with onboard video...?

canto86

where do I get that?

Bjossi

How much would you spend on a video card? Youīd get a good video card for $150 - $200.

here a link for ati video cards for $150 - $200 on newegg.com website

And for alittle over $200 you can get a powerful Geforce 6600 GT, 256 Mb I think. And try to get fast memory too, DDR3 or something.

I think itīs told to be the best video card in that price range. I havenīt tried it actually, still stuck with GeforceFX 5700 LE. :p

Same Problem for me.
"ERROR: could not Initialise DirectX 9 Renderer"

Allready finished Painkiller.
Now i'm dancing with BOOH's First Boss ... well ... that was some months ago, when i had time to do so ...

Don't know when this Problem started (at least some weeks ago), but today i tried to fix it with following steps:

> Install 1.61 through 1.64
> ReInstall BOOH
> Deinstall and Reinstall Painkiller as a whole (withouth BOOH and Patches)

Nothing works, problem stays ...

Changes made to my System since last play:
> 2 or 3 new Video-Drivers (Radeon X800 Pro)
> Kicked CDRW-Burner, installed DVD-Burner (i think)

And that allready is all that has changed.

System:
> Win XP Pro SP 2
> 3 x 512 PC3200 @ 333
> Radeon X800 Pro (GeCube)
> 3 x 120+ GB HDD
> Athlon 3000+ XP
> Leadtek WinFast K7NCR18D-ProII

have install directx 9.0c and try redownloading and installing your video driver again

As Death666 said.
I notice youīve done everything except install a DirectX 9 renderer which the error tells you to do. (DirectX 9.0c is required for 1.5 and above)

You both are wrong with this. DX 9.0c is obviously installed, since i allready played BOOH.
No Distribution of DX9.0c does install anything new. So the idea of installing something, that is installed since it's release, just don't work.
And by the way ... why would DX stop working?

The Error does not state, that there is no DX-Renderer, it just tells about it's unability to initiate one (why ever that is).

Installing new Video-Drivers does not work either. They are actual. I tried swichting vom ATI's ControlCenter-Version to ControlPanel-Version. No effect on Painkiller.

If someone may be able to supply me with a way to kick and reinstall DirectX completely, i might try that.

ReInstall DirectX should work, Iīm not sure how to unInstall it completely, but you might find info using Google.

Then install DirectX again and it SHOULD fix it, if not, I recommend emailing tech support.

Looks like you can't be shure about uninstalling it, even after you did it ...
... don't exactly know what gave me the oppertunity to reinstall DX (took several tools, of wich none really worked).

Did the same with the Video-Driver.

Painkiller runs again.

I have never unInstalled DirectX, I only know it can be problematic if installation fails.
Of course I canīt be sure if it works, the only thing 100% that hasnīt happened is death you know. ;)

But Iīm glad it worked for you. :)

So, if I understand correctly, a laptop video card won't work w/ Painkiller at all? Even if it's a 128M card? And yes, I've installed and reinstalled DX 9c multiple times.

Bjossi

It should work, maybe the video card doesnīt support DirectX 9 technology.

Grinder1989

or its possible PK doesn't support the card because it could just be a high powered intel card or something like that.

Well on dxdiag, I ran all the tests w/ success... I just keep getting the "Cannnot Initialize Dx 9 renderer"

wow.. that would be lame if that were the case.

This is why I really really like console gaming

Bjossi
06-06-2005, 08:31 AM
I donīt like consoles because theyīre too simple for my taste, no mods or patches or moving files/folders.

Btw, laptops arenīt made for gaming, so Iīm not surprised a game is problematic. But if the card is onboard video, Painkiller doesnīt support that if I remember correctly.

OK, well it just seems a little unreasonable that a new computer can't run a game from last year.

Looks like I'll be hawking this one on the local forums; thanks guys

I think itīd be helpful to know if the video card has a name. :)
I think the developers concentrate on PCs, since laptops are usually not used for gaming. It spares money.
