View Full Version : Painkiller won't start when I try to run it. Please help.

I have Painkiller: Gold Edition. I just installed the game for the first time, but whenever I double click the executable to play it, nothing happens. I have the right cd in my cd drive; however, no messages pop up or anything when I try to start the game--just the desktop.

I wonder if the problem is due to the fact that I cancelled the installation process the first time I tried to install the game. I wanted to use my faster cd drive. I then tried to install over that cancelled installation. The installation finished without a problem, but I couldn't run the game. I then unistalled the game and reinstalled it in a different directory. I still can't run it. I downloaded and applied all the patches, but I'm still having the same problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Strange. Have you tried deleting all Painkiller related files, shortcuts and registry entries and then install again?

Iīm not sure if this will work for 32-bit files, but if you run Painkiller.exe through command line, you might see the error.

Well, I didn't manually delete anything; I just ran the uninstaller. I'll try messing around with the command line. Hopefully I won't have to install the program again--it takes almost a half hour with my slow drives.

I think unInstalling leaves some registry entries, it does happen rarely that incompability occurs.

But try reInstalling again if nothing else works, 30 minutes install is worth it imo. :)

But if it ainīt working, you can email the tech support of DreamCatcher. Just make sure to give them full detail of your problem and see if you get a helpful reply.

Your computer is more than enough. But there are two things that *might* fix your problem.
1) UnInstalling SP2
2) Get a sound card

Just keep the SP2 setup file somewhere to install it again if the game wonīt work when SP2 is removed.

Other than updating drivers for your hardware, I canīt help you any further. :(

Well, thanks for the help. I'll try updating my drivers and see what happens. I haven't had any problems with other games, so I don't think it's a problem with my soundcard--but you never know. I sent my system information to tech support, but they haven't responded yet. Hopefully I'll be able to work something out. Thanks again.

I hope your problem gets solved soon. :)
The tech support for all games tend to be slow, I waited a week for a reply few years ago as I mentioned in another thread. The solution was worth the waiting tho. :D

I think this is somehow related to either Athlon 64s or SLI boards. There were some people before having problems with Painkiller and this hardware. If you get answer from techsupport, post your solution here (curious what the reason might be).

Good tip, death!
You're right, I remember a thread here were people fixed problems with that SLI board by unplugging their network connection, too.

I disabled my lan connection and now Painkiller works! Thanks, everybody; This game is pretty sweet!

When tech support gets back to me, I'll tell them about the problems with the Asus board.

Happy Painkilling!

Thatīs "unusual" solution to a problem.
Iīll remember this if another one with SLI Asus board has problems. :)
