As we wait for the game - and even afterwards - we will still be gaming. So what are you playing now?

PC/Mac
Now Playing: Guild Wars ... well, after getting it at launch, I have played a bit - I have two characters going. Haven't played much recently though.

GBA/DS
Now Playing: Golden Sun: again, still, whatever ... it is really good, and someday I'll finish.

PSP
Now Playing: Untold Legends ... hack ... slash ... rinse (blade) ... repeat ...

I'm a PC-only guy. Tried the Xbox for a while (basically to play KOTOR), but grew bored with the games.

Anyhoo, on the PC I'm replaying "Planescape: Torment" for about the third time (sad, I know). Also, I have the occasional stint with "Rome: Total War." Ahhh... what an EX-cellent game.

Played KOTOR2 for a while and was very frustrated by quest bugs, black screens of death, etc. Buggy mess that game....

Oh, and I'm co-developer on a fairly epic Neverwinter Nights module that I've been working on for over a year (so doing testing, testing, testing... etc.).

Basically, I'm just sitting here waiting for "Dungeon Lords," as that's the game I truly want to play.

Why is it sad to replay one of the best games ever?!?! I regularly replay games I love ...

I guess I'm not alone, as "Planescape" is currently the #2 best selling PC game on gogamer's website. Hard to pass up getting a bundle with Planescape AND Soulbringer for like 8 bucks.... Man, but that's a great value!

I find RPGs, particularly those from Black Isle and Troika, to be eminently replayable. I've replayed the Fallouts, Arcanum, Planescape, BG2, and others countless times.... I'm always waiting for a newer game to enter that rare pantheon of replayable CRPGs, but haven't played something that good in quite some time.

KOTOR was... decent. Not exciting or thrilling and it lacked a real compelling story, but it was decent and playable. Other than that though, nada.

I'm hoping for great things from Obsidian, makers of NWN2, though I found KOTOR2 to be QUITE underwhelming.

I'm playing The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and I'm finally doing the main quest.

txa1265 what is the catch with Guild Wars free online play? I was looking at the box today while I was in the store and I couldn't find the small print. Bet it's free for a month.

There is *no catch*. I have heard it compared to Diablo 2 (which I never played), where you had lobbies and then dungeons.

In Guild Wars, you have 'hub towns', which are online areas where you can trade, meet people, breakdance, whatever. Then when you leave to do some questing, you enter an 'instanced area', which is more or less local, at least reserved for you.

So there will *never* be fees for playing ... just for added content as they go along.

It is funny - I was replaying a bit of Morrowind a week or so ago, then dropped it ... I will likely never touch it again, as Guild Wars has much the same feel for me, and is prettier to look at.

Nothing actually, just uninstalled all the games I was playing (gothic 2, Evil Islands, MW) in preparation of DL :D I can last a couple days without computer......I hope.....

Games I'm waiting for (Oblivion, Bard's Tale, DS2, Dragon Age, NWN2, Fallout 3) some of those will be a long wait.....but at least I'll have DL to get me by.

Have you seen the screens (http://www.tothegame.com/screenshot.asp?id=2511) and teaser trailer (http://www.worldofgothic.de/dl/index.php?go=downloads&file_id=153) for Gothic 3? That's the next biggie for me ...

Currently I'm spreading my time between NWN, Morrowind and a bit of DS. I like trying out different class combinations in NWN (playing a bard/dragon disciple right now). Morrowind needs some serious gaming time to get anything done but I'm devoting more time now and enjoying trying different Great Houses and different class of character. Playing the expansion for DS, haven't finished it yet as I'm not a big fan of dungeon crawls in general. I like freedom to do optional quests and stray from the main plot line. Although Morrowind is a bit on the extreme end and NWN is still a bit too linear for my taste. It will be interesting to see how the main plot line plays out in Dungeon Lords and how good the side quests are.

OK, one thing I'll clarify - the combat in Guild Wars reminds me of Dungeon Siege more than Morrowind - click attack and the attack will continue without your intervention. I actually had a phone comversation while battling an enemy I knew I damaged faster than they damaged me (3:2 ratio, more or less), and the battle went on, and I killed the monster, clicked my 'heal' skill, and then sat there until I was done. Still, the combat requires some strategy and thought.

Playing now:
MW: it has a pace all it's own. Most immersive game I've ever played, atmosphere/aesthetics-wise. Really feels like you're wandering around a world, not just a game. It has many flaws, but is also downright brilliant.

Kohan II: best RTS I've ever played. Less micro, more strategy/thinking, more paths to success than just rock/paper/scissors.

AoW:SM - PBEM: desperately looking for a good TBS that can be played PBEM. Don't think this one's working out. The tactical combat portion of the game is it's best part, imo, and that's resolved auto-magically in PBEM. The rest of the game can't make up for it, given my very small time slice available for gaming.

@rune - GW will release "expansions" every 6 months, supposedly, that you can buy to add content to the world. You don't have to buy them if you don't want to.

@txa - MW and GW have the same feel for you? Really? How so? I beta-ed GW last fall and found it much, much more multi and combat oriented and much more akin to D2 than MW. For me, those two games are on the two ends of the scale for CRPG's. GW is on the action side and MW is on the slower, exploring and classic RPG'ing side.

Gaming, like most things, ebbs and flows through you life ... don't force it. I had years where I was lucky to play a game once a month ...

@txa - MW and GW have the same feel for you? Really? How so? I don't know ... wander around, do a few quests, kill a few things, get on the 'main quest', wander some more ... they both have more of a plodding feel in many areas. Maybe it is closer to D2, but I never played that ...

This is what killed Morrowind for me... that feeling of never being able to accomplish anything. When I play a game I want to be able to finish some kind of quest/task each time I play. With Morrowind, I often just felt like I was spinning my wheels (particularly since many quests actually require the passage of time before they can be completed). That's not to say I didn't get hours and hours of enjoyment from it... but looking back on it, it is not ranked highly among games I've played in the past. Also, I doubt I will have the desire to play it again.

A game for me has to have a focused and compelling narrative AND interesting monsters, NPCs, and a good RPG stats engine. Having a good story without the RPG system behind it gives you a glorified adventure game. Having a good stats engine without a good story gives you... well, Morrowind.

This game seems like it is going to fall someplace in the middle. I don't think there will be that much aimless wandering about and, conversely, I don't think the story will be all that focused and compelling (but I'll wait for the full title to pass judgement on that one). Since I'm going to play this quite a bit in co-op mode, the lack of a detailed story is not necessarily a bad thing, as too much dialogue can detract from a good multiplayer session.

Playing Morrowind right now. Of course the game sucks. But add about 50 mods to it and you got the best game ever. Hope DL has as much content as MW does, and more of a character developement.

I'm playing Guild Wars and am pretty darned impressed and pleased with it thus far. If you dont like MMORPG games though, you most likely wont like this one either... but it does do a lot of things MUCH nicer than current MMO's on the market. The combat reminds me of Magic The Gathering meets Everquest/Diablo. Hard to explain, but very fun and strategic. The PvP kicks much arse as well. Definitely took my mind off Dungeon Lords (but I'm still grabbing that game when it hits the store here).

the main thing I hated about MW was it dialogue scheme, it makes you not feel very involved and is a pain in the *** to mod a descent multibranched dilogue to so conversation depth is lost majorily. Hopefully oblivion uses a different scheme (one like kotor per chance... easy to mod a kotor dialogue).

DL's conversation in demo came off a bit like MWs, but hopefully isn't, or at least isn't as bad repetitive wise.

True. MW's such a funny game, because some things about it are so brilliant and others really make you scratch your head and say, "what the **** were they thinking?" Like why they thought it would be a good idea to have almost every frickin' NPC have the same canned dialogue about the same 20 or 30 subjects so that the player has to scroll through them to see if there's anything different or interesting. Better to have them not speak at all then have that.

PC/Mac
Now Playing: Wizards & Warriors - I bought this on eBay to play while waiting for Dungeon Lords ... it just arrived. Oh well, a bit of 'old school' fun until tomorrow when DL arrives.

Nintendo DS
Now Playing: Episode III Revenge of the Sith - best graphics I've seen on my DS to date, and it is silky smooth with multiple enemies on screen. Music is great ... so far just an excellent game. Until I flail on the flight part anyway ... ;)

I'm on the final scene in Gothic, where I have to find and kill 5 Orc shamans to release the Sleeper. I killed the first yesterday and am stuck on a door whose open switch I can't find, but a few more hours of wandering and I'm sure I'll have it open. I'm really, really impressed with Gothic, but because I've spent so much time with it, I have resisted picking up Gothic 2 since it'll only be more of the same but in a different setting. Dungeon Lords is my gaming purchase this month, I'm saving for a trip to Canada so I can't spend too much on games. Pity, really, there is a LOT I want to buy right now!

I'm also dabbling in Stronghold 2, but it's really not a great title. I'm on the third mission where you have to manage your people's crap, and it's not a lot of fun. Don't see myself finishing that one...

On the DS:

- WarioWares (GBA version).
- Zelda Minish Cap (GBA)

Being an off topic thread full of RPG guru's I thought I would ask a quick question.

There was a RPG that I only played the demo of but was really impressed. I can't remember the name but I do remember that the game had a feature that allowed you to create items like armor and weapons from items you found in the game. Kinda like the NWN expansion pack HOU.

This would have been at least 7 years ago and I never ended picking it up. Graphics were pretty good, demo was set outdoors with a settlement you could go to to train your skills, buy stuff and build your items. Perspective was third person I believe.

Any ideas?

Hmmm 7 years ago...and you exspect me to remember....LOL.. the first one that pops to my head...

Evil Islands - 3rd person, craft items from hides of animals and such... had to go "off map" or to shop keeper to spend exp on skills... great graphics.... Outside mostly call "Chosen One" at beginning of game a lot...

Not sure how old it is though....

I'm guessing you are talking about Dungeon Lords.

Are you going to wait and review a patched version or the release version? How many patchings will you allow before you review the game?

I was also wondering about other review sites like Gamespot and so forth. Do you think they will wait to review a patched version of the game as a courtesy?

Well, I'm playing now - the retail version - so I am making my judgements as both a gamer and reviewer. What decisions I make on the patch (as a reviewer) will depend on when it comes and what it asks of me.

Many places have a 'no patch' rule, others patch up to 'start of game', still others have no fixed rules. I don't care, really - I'd rather reward a developer for at least getting a patch out, especially close to day of release.

txa1265 : 1 question: will there be possible to MOD this game ? (DL i mean) I would love to see a FIRST PERSON mode like in TES:Morrowind :D Btw, what do you think of Sacred ?? I think its fun,but a bit frustrating when fighting at every step you make.Still, the exploring and the vastness is great! If you never played and/or you played Diablo II (offcourse you did!), you MUST try this one (this is a tip for ppl who didnt play Sacred offcourse :D ).
... another question: Do you remember Battlecruiser/Universal Combat ? If so,then you can understand my frustration with Dreamcatcher (even if u dont give a **** :) )

Geez i saw Gothic 3 screens 2 weeks ago on 3dgamer ... I think they have a long way to go before thinking about modding the game. They have to make sure the original game works first. We're all hoping they will continue to work on it until it's fixed and that some outside source like "Circle of Eight" doesn't have to step in and finish it for general public like they did with Temple of Elemental Evil.

txa1265 : 1 question: will there be possible to MOD this game ? (DL i mean) I would love to see a FIRST PERSON mode like in TES:Morrowind :D I have no idea what is planned, I just know that the people at the very small Heuristic Park are working 100+ hour weeks trying to patch the game up to where they want it to be.

Btw, what do you think of Sacred ?? I think its fun,but a bit frustrating when fighting at every step you make.Still, the exploring and the vastness is great! If you never played and/or you played Diablo II (offcourse you did!), you MUST try this one (this is a tip for ppl who didnt play Sacred offcourse :D ). Amazingly, I only got into RPG's with the Mac version of NWN, which I bought only as a 'lead up' to KotOR, which came to my interest through my Star Wars love. My wife had bought me Diablo at release, at the suggestion of a friend (I was FPS only back then), and I really hated it. Never played Diablo II other than the demo. Sacred I got, and it is easy to 'pick up and play', but I found it very unsatisfying after a while. Tried it again recently, same thing ... fun for 20 - 30 hours, then boredom.

... another question: Do you remember Battlecruiser/Universal Combat ? If so,then you can understand my frustration with Dreamcatcher (even if u dont give a **** :) )

Hmm,i really suggest you play Diablo II (full version:P).I heard that Diablo (1st episode) is verry frustrating due to characters not being able to RUN.This is FRUSTRATING. do You have any suggestions of RPGs ? Anyone that can be **** intruguing&involving&replayable ? Do you think DL will be like that?

****,i wish that Guild Wars could have a SP campaign (Didnt they say a while ago -1 year or so- it will be SP too ?).

Hmmm,Im a Star Wars fan too - played all the games since Dark Forces - Jedi Knight II (the first 3d jedi game, right?).I didnt like SW:Starfighter that much, but this game HAS potential becoming a verry non-linear world-traveling game :) I hope there will be a SW:Starfighter 2 or something (more like Freelancer). I just LOVED Kotor 1 ... Kotor 2 was a bit weird in starting like a Jedi, and was a bit short for my taste (sure, plenty of dialogues...but the main story was kind of short - at least it seemed that way).I loved in Kotor 1 where you prepared to become a jedi.

Do you know if it were ever be a game like JEDI ACADEMY but more RPG-ish like DL ? To fight in real-time and to quests like in KOTOR ,would be AWESOME.What do you think about that?

Im sorry for such a long list of questions, but im really into this :)

Xyyth : Thanks m8, i think too that the patching is the first priority ... Well, maybe this game will be something to remember and say " Yeah, it looked they screwed it up,but man was i wrong !! " :) I realllllly hope so.

What about Star Trek Bridge commander ? I'm level 7 in Guild Wars and trying to find and finish every quest I can before moving on to the ruined Ascalon mission. With the Dungeon Lords release, my time in the game has been split but I can't wait to see how the gameplay is after that 1st mission. I have no interest, as people have told me that Sacred is basically D2 with some better stuff and better graphics.

I hope everything pans out for Dungeon Lords ... I really do. There is *so* much really cool stuff ... it is just a shame, really, to see things getting hung up over small things.

****,i wish that Guild Wars could have a SP campaign (Didnt they say a while ago -1 year or so- it will be SP too ?).I played for a week and a half, took a couple of characters through several levels (fighter and mage) ... basically solo'd everything. It is a really fun game, even just to solo for many hours.

Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight (in 1997) was the first 3D Jedi game, but Jedi Knight II is my fave. I also really love KotOR, both of them - like the start of KotOR2 better, but KotOR closes much better.

Do you know if it were ever be a game like JEDI ACADEMY but more RPG-ish like DL ? To fight in real-time and to quests like in KOTOR ,would be AWESOME.What do you think about that?
On some of the Star Wars game fan forums, there was lamenting about how half-done the RPG-lite of Jedi Academy was ... how you could just look and see 'what might have been'. That would be my ultimate - something like Gothic or Dungeon Lords, but set in a Star Wars universe.

I'm level 7 in Guild Wars and trying to find and finish every quest I can before moving on to the ruined Ascalon mission. With the Dungeon Lords release, my time in the game has been split but I can't wait to see how the gameplay is after that 1st mission. I was in the last beta day but never got to that point in the game so it will be all new to me.

ditto, all new to me as well, all quests were done, all land explored, time to move on, finally got to use the crafting materials i've been hoarding the last 7 levels :)

really love the graphics in that game, its too bad some of these developing houses don't get together and make a really really nice game with their combined resources/intelligence/ideas.

If any you guys want to ever group up with someone, add me to your friends list. My character name in GW is "Sivle Yelserp". I think with just 1 character name in friends list, it will tell you when I am on no matter which character I am on as... could be wrong though.

Im playing guild wars way to much. And I cant stop playing Postal2 it's just to funny.. Sims 2 is also really funny. But what I really want to play is some good rpgs. I'm worn out on KOTOR 1&2, i cant possibly play any more morrowind. So DL coulda been just what i needed. Oh and VTM:BLOODLINES is pretty cool even tho its really buggy. If I had a Ps2 again i would be playing the whole Final Fantasy series.

At its' heart it is a pretty lousy game, but it is such rampant, disrespectful fun that it is hard *not* to play ... I played through once, then got the 'pee Napalm' thing, played some a second time through, then the patch came out that helped with the utterly horrific load times, then I just drifted away from it, never to return.

I won't be unless the gameplay that was feathered in Morrowind is drasticlly changed. The gameplay in Morrowind was a big step back compaired to the gameplay that was in Daggerfall. I couldn't help but feel like I was playing Diablo all over again when I played Morrowind - it is all just click, click, click. At least in Diablo 2 there's an auto-attack feature.

You could have the best graphics in the world, but if the gameplay isn't there all that good eye-candy amounts to nothing.

Anyways, to answer the orinigal question. I'm replay Wizardry 8 until Dungeon Lords gets a few more patches.

are you nuts man a RPG should never be automated or have an auto-attack
diablo has it becose of the third person camera is in outer space tipe vew and the game needs it but when your playing in first person and have compleat controll over what you are doing it should never be automated their is no comparison between diablo II and morrowind

When all you're doing is clicking your moust button as fast as you can; then yes an auto-attack is needed like in Diablo 2. In Morrowind all you do is click, click, click as fast as you can and it got old 5 mins into the game. At least with Diablo 2 your agility stat actually did something and helped with your attack speed. Unlike Morrowind where most of you stats mean nothing, because you can only attack as fast as you can click the mouse button.

How does Arx Fatalis compare to Gothic 2? I have never played this game but from what I've seen of it, it looks fairly decent as an RPG. I was just curious.

Arx is a fun and atmospheric RPG. I can't compare it to Gothic as I didn't play much of Gothic.

Arx is one game I have to admit consulting a walkthrough, as many times you are given no information to help you proceed. In addition, there are some jump puzzles, including one that has about a 1 pixel acceptance point for landing. I literally did that jump 125 times before getting it (reloads).

But in all it is a very good game and worth trying.

I'm starting to think that my hobby is dying for me. None of these games can hold my attention for more than a couple sit downs. Recently, I've tried Sacred, Restricted Area, some other various games/demos and they all just make my eyes go buggy with boredom. These MMO's all seem to suck to me, Guild Wars, pos imo, WoW erm yeah i'll just say no thanks to extreme repetitiveness involved in grinding, EQ2 same as WoW but worse, EQ1 played it a long time but it's just old now. It all just seems like a big pile of crap. Others mileage may vary but I think nowadays I'm turning into a "occassional gamer" instead of a real gamer. It's just due to these craptastic games... man they just suck.
Currently the only thing I am even remotely looking forward to is GTA:SA on PC. Never played it so hopefully it will actually immerse me. None of these other games I mentioned did (cept EQ1 originally).
I dunno, I'm so confused, lol. Am I losing my gamer side to the non productiveness of these games or are they crap? *shrug*

I have a instinctual problem when I have to consult a walkthrough ... in fact I downloaded that PDF guide that someone had put together (I can't recall if it was at GameBanshee or RPGDot). Arx was a decent game, though.

I'm playing:
- Nox (picked up cheap on eBay, fun little action RPG)
- Fate - I think this might be the CRPG I use to hook my kids ;)
- Untold Legends [PSP]

Right now I'm playing several things when I have the time:

WoW
Guild Wars
Battlefield 2 Demo
FATE
Half-Life 2 (just got it actually; better late than never)

I am also messing around with Gothic 2 and Wizardry 8 but haven't got very far into them yet. Wizardry 8 character creation takes a while but that's old school 6 person party gaming for you. Nothing new there if you played the old "Gold Box" games.

Xbox: Jade Empire & GTA: San Andreas (have both games but haven't had time to mess with them much yet; too much on my platter)

Now playing:
- Restricted Area [PC] - not very much fun, looks good, though. I've gotten past that 'danger of dying' phase, and took on a 'hard' side-quest probably before I should have and got 4 levels in one mission ... now everything is boring ...
- Darkstone [PC] - still exploring the first area. Seems like a fun little game.
- Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones [GBA] - what a really good game. I've never been into strategy games, but this does it in a way that it isn't like controlling 'units', it is your team going into battle ...

Wow... Darkstone is an old game. I liked it, but it crashed my computer sooner or later and I was forced to delete it and destroy the disk. I have the one for PS1 but it is not that great.

I had Darkstone when it first came out. It sort of bridged the gap between the time Diablo and Diablo 2 was released.

I remember the graphics were really good at the time but everything seemed way overpriced at the vendors for the money you actually made while playing it.

Was playing X2 - The Threat for well over a year. A most excellent space simulation game. Each time I go into a store, I look for a good RPG. Saw Dungeon Lords and started playing it.
Seeing the bugs in the game (DL), I'm just basically using it as a warmup for when Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion comes out, then will switch to that game full time.
