Wasn't this game cancelled?

Nope, RPG vault posted peek number 15 on April 8, 2005.

Maybe you're thinking of that similar looking project call ERA. That was at frist supposed to be an ULtima 1 remake and then it became ERA and now it simply is going to be called something else under another company. I always felt the screen shots for Witcher and ERA had a similar feel to them.

I don't think so. That preview is pretty new. Maybe you're thinking of Cleric?

Yeah, the Witcher (a NWN engine game) has been on my radar for over a year now (just announced pre-E3 last year) and I think it looks cool.

I too have been following this game for awhile. Just watched that trailer last night and it's a damned sweet trailer. Love the fast motion change from day to night and the whole look of the game. :)

I was interested until i saw the BIOWARE ENGINE logo... then i got sad and closed my browser window.

When you got state of the art technology like Unreal Tournaments 2k4 3D Engine available for purchasing there shouldnt really be any excuse for choosing something lame like the Bioware Engine.

(yah i dont like point and click rpgs)

That's funny ... I think that when you have the choice to built a game with some substance instead of a 'new shiny' mindless shooter ... graphics shouldn't matter.

I love both RPG & FPS, but think too much emphasis is put on making everything so pretty, as opposed to what really matters in a RPG ...

LOL

Good one Emulated. Yes, that’s one thing I wish DL had more of. Everything seems so empty. The Witcher looks pretty detailed and that’s some major improvements to the NWN engine. (Doest seem like the same engine):)

I'm concerned about the combat in The Witcher. It has some kinda funkyfried clicking on system that I'm not clear about. If this game fails in the combat I'm gonna be sad. :/

Yes gameplay is sometimes taking a backseat to the graphics. I also find it strange when people say a games graphics suck when the engine is a year or two old. Id pay for a quake II engine game with awesome gameplay (for example). I love graphics and games that look awesome, but I'm tired of the gameplay suffering.

I have no desire whatsoever to support Dreamcather Games at this point. They have a horriifc track record. Until they prove otherwise, my money will be reserved for companies that know how to properly orchestrate and release a finished piece of work.

Painkiller was an excellent game, although the expansion was a bit disappointing. Adding maps and changing the weapons available falls under "mod" in my book, not "expansion pack".

I agree Painkiller was a really fun shooter. Never did install the expansion yet.

Guys, witcher has new graphics engine, I don't know exacly but aurora engine is taking care for something else. Just look at the new screens, is it remind you NWN? I think it will fight with Gothic 3 and Oblivion (and maybe NWN2) for cRPG of the year award :]

Um ... I think that the people making the game disagree with you ...

itcher game engine
In this section you will find information about the game engine and its features. "The Witcher" is powered by a new version of the BioWare Aurora Engine(TM), modified for a single-player experience. A number of changes have been introduced to the original BioWare Aurora Engine(TM), and some of them are described below.

World visualization
One of the most important of which is modification to the world-visualization method. In BioWare Aurora Engine(TM), the world is designed exactly as it was envisioned, rather than utilizing a tile-based system. Because of this, the visuals are unique and rich in detail. All the environments are created in 3D Studio Max 6.0, and then exported into the game engine.

* Lightmaps
Our version of the engine supports lightmaps, generated in 3DS Max. Shadows generated this way look more realistic and are better performance-wise.

* Texture paint
This is a special tool that enables us to paint the environment using custom textures, which saves a lot of time and looks more natural than ordinary mapping.

* Skybox and water effects
We have added new realistic skybox and water effects to the engine.

Rendering
All the in game and toolset rendering is done using DirectX9, and the engine supports now plenty of different shaders (water effect, bump mapping, environment mapping, etc). Additionally the whole rendering system has been unified and a new light manager was added.

Other changes
Other important changes include the following: motion-captured animation, physics effects, new mechanics and combat system. There are also many other modifications, like introduction of portals, additional graphical effects (glows, advanced dynamic shadows, blurs), and will describe them in detail later.

Looks pretty cool. Long development cycle though... I hope it is as good as they advertise....

Anyone can slap together some cool screenies (Remember Daikatana?).... a game is more about substance, and THEN the flash in my opinion.

maspingon

Yeah I remember Daikatana...So..? If you are so sceptic , download some Witcher movies from gametrailers.com..This game is looking even better then on the screens

Watched them. Yeah they are pretty... I'll just wait and see. I'm tired of being WOWED by pretyy "advertisements" then getting the big letdown once the products is on my PC.

My bigest hope at the moment is that Oblivion will run well and have enough substance to make for a great RPG experience.

I still say though, that if a few people would take the engine for "The Temple of Elemental Evil" and make a few old D&D modules, it would go a long way into resurrecting a genre that is simply blinded by its own flash.
