OK, I had little time this weekend between my son's First Communion and Mother's Day, but I played a bit, and it seemed that when my Mage was picking up new spells, nothing would happen. I know I saw more Shrieking Stars, Magic Missles, Fear, etc ... but in my inventory was still just the initial 2 Shrieking stars and Freeze Touch.

I restarted this morning on a different computer, and I could see more stuff - got Summon Undead scroll, and Summon Rats Nether spell.

Has anyone else seen anything like this?

if you pick up scrolls it doesnt add to your castable spells, just the rare drop books.

mages are seriously gimped simply due to our reliance on campsite that dont exist, and rarity of spellbook drops. i used the money cheat and bought a shitload of spellbooks in fargrove.....but they're still useless in arindale since there are no fires anywhere.

As Paradigm9 suggested, spell books and spell scrolls are two different things. Spell scrolls did not exist in the demo. They are one use and show up in the potions tab I believe, at work atm so I can't verify.

There are campfires in many places that one can rest at, haven't had any problems with that. Also theres the buying of rooms at taverns, which works as well. The only things I've found so far that don't work, other than the occasional crash, is appearance and map. And even the crashes have been exceedingly rare for me, I think only twice, and I've been playing it with my two kids constantly through the weekend.

The one really annoying thing that has been happening is two of the three of us being teleported to the edge of the world when zoning out of some buildings. We have however found a way around that, each of us be pressing movement in different directions as we zone. It seems to be that the characters are all being zoned to the same physical location and the game getting confused.

Mages seem to be more the Gandalf have a few spells and good with magic weapons type than the pure mage. Arcane and celestial mages are the only two starting classes that get magic weapon skill, which activates the magic on the staves, doing some pretty impressive damage for early in the game.

Thanks ... haven't done the magic weapon skill yet, not really sure how - have to look into it.

I noticed the scrolls... but when I played on my other laptop, I would see the messages for picking things up, Magic Missle, etc and get *nothing* added (I clicked 'all' to see) so I assume a bug.

I have no problem - my intent was actually to play a 'battle-mage', as I love the Magic, and also the JKII-style melee.

Glad to hear that there are replenishment points around ... just entered the sewers with this new playthrough, hope to get more in at lunch ...

Unlike many of the weapon skills, any weapons that require magic weapon skill shows the level required on the item. For instance the goblin staff show as a level 1 magic weapon, the staff of burning is something like level 3 magic weapon, though that one I'm not sure of.

One slightly annoying thing is the fact that magic weapon can never be higher than light weapons, so to get magic weapon 2, you need light weapon 2. The problem with this would be if you want to use the short polearm style magic staves such as the goblin staff and staff of burning. Fortunately the magus staff and the staff of scaron (sp?) are considered light weapons and do quite well once the magic has been enabled.

By the way people, has anyone tried the Alter Of Stars quest for mage ?.

My brother is driving me INSANE... We went there but totaly nothing happens.
The Alter Of Stars has a yellow weird circle in the middle sorta like a key hole.
My brother drops the Candle on top of Alter like they say but nothing...

Arrgggg... maybe a BUG ?....

Just to confirm, my mage is working just fine - have no idea what happened on the other laptop ... but I have confirmed that not only do spells show up, but new charges as well. Regeneration works fine as well. A bit slow, as 99% of my kills are by 'stick', but at least I can 'soften up' the enemy a bit.

I still haven't passed the end of the demo yet ...

When I played on the LAN with a friend, he saw a helmet on a merchant I could use that wouldn't appear when I talked to the merchant.

What do you mean? I'm in FarGrove, actually in the Catecombs now, just faced my first Headless dude (4 Zombies spawned in the middle of that battle ... whew!) ... I still have just a few spells - what section of town has a mage shop?
