i have read a lot of posts on this forum comparing Dungeon Lords to Neverwinter Nights Gothic 2, Morrowind and countless others. my little opinion on all that is you cant compare RPGs to other RPGs and use that comparasin to judge a game. they all have vast differences, like gameplay, stories, open endedness, character interaction and lots of others. everyone expects different things out of an RPG and its impossible to fit it all into one game. i still thinks it sucks that this game was realeased in the condition that it was but you should just play it and not worry about the fact that Gothic or Morrowind had a feature that DL dosent. its a good game that shouldent be judged on a basis of how closley it resembles another game. anyway thats just my thoughts. feel free to disagree and call me names if you feel the need.

I very much disagree. Anyone who has a fairly good ability to abstract and see patterns can make intelligent comparisions.

Sure, they have differences, but this game is obviously more similar to Morrowind, for example, than it is to Diablo 2.

A few things to contemplate:

1) Is the world linear like Dungeon Siege, very open like Gothic/Morrowind, or semi-open like Diablo 2?

2) When played in single player mode, do you control one or several characters?

3) Does the game use a living and breathing world like Gothic or does it it depend on random encounters like Wizardy 8 and DL?

4) Is it turn based or real time?

These are categories of difference.

Then you have what all of these games have in common:

1) Various choices for starting characters,

2) Some sort of plot, with quests along the way,

3) Some sort of leveling/advancement scheme,

4) Loot to be found.

The genre is actually fairly well defined if you think about it. A features checklist that could be compared right down the line isn't hard to make if you wanted to.
