I never played any of the Gothic games, though I heard about them.. but so many people have posted about them here that I went looking around..

I don't know if anyone has seen it or not but there is a Gothic 3 site now,

http://www.gothic3.com

Screenshots look sick! Now if I could only read German :)

edit - oops they have english too

There is also a teaser trailer here. (http://www.3dgamers.com/games/gothic3/downloads/)

Looks very nice.

Personally, Gothic II is one of my 'top 5 ever' games, and it was largely the love of that game and Jedi Knight II that brought me here.

Gothic, especially the second part, rocks. One of the best rpgīs ever, trust me. Itīs like walking for real in a fantasy world and the story is great. Try it for yourself...

I picked up Gothic 2 the other day at Fry's for $15. I'm tempted to start playing it now until this game gets fixed, but I haven't yet.

well before you jump into Gothic II....

The english expansion will be released soon (though I have no specific date).

As far as I remember it the add-on is not save game compatible and the added things are intertwined in the normal story.

So if it is being released soon, you might wanna consider having this before advancing too far into the game...

Otherwise get playing it right now! And enjoy it! It really is a fantastic game!

I own both Gothic games and I must say that they are great rpg's, thier pretty tough. the bad thing is that the gothic series has a hard time making it to the states. I think Gothic 2 took two years or more for it to come out in the states after its release in germany... and those gothic3 shots have me jumping out of my seat. the gothic games are really addictive and the storylines are superb and 100% voice acted in both games. The music is Great , graphics are clean and clear , and gothic 2 is freaking huge . It's a very overlooked series. Pick up both of them if you get a chance.

Gothic 2 was a game I bought when it first came out. After 6 hours or so I gave up on it(Mainly for the combat controls). I then decided to give it another try (6 months later and after getting a new video card). All I can say is I'm glad I did. It ended up being one of the best games I've played in along time. Once I got used to the controls the story and environment drew me in. Since then I've been a big fan and I'm really looking forward to Gothic 3. I really hope that they don't release Gothic 3 a year after the German release:(. I also hope the release the gothic 2 English expansion soon, and from what I've been reading on the gothic forums it not to far away.

Oh and yes, Im really liking Dungeon Lords

gothic 2's default controls were horrid, but you could turn them off to not be like gothic 1's and they were better :). I think The developers said that Gothic 3 will be released in US soon after their release, because of the popularity of the game over here :D hopefully that is true.

Can you "just" play Gothic 2 and get as much enjoyment as everyone here claims.

I know that my buddy let me borrow it and try it out. I got a little annoyed with the controls and decided to "pass" on the game. However, I think, like some people mentioned here, had I given it some more time to get use to, I might have found an exceptional game.

while good, i didn't thing gothic 1/2 were ALL that good, my top 20 are still taken up by the likes of ultima, gold box series, elder scrolls/arena, knights of legend, etc. although my enjoyment of DL so far would put it somewhere in that category so far, for me.

So far, If I total up the amount of hours I have spent in Both Gothic and GothicII. I come up to exactly 811-hours and 32 mins.

Gothic 1 is a classic and if you ever see it lying in a store, grab it, buy it, install it, play it, LIVE IT!

This may sound silly as I haven't played either one, but should I get Gothic 2 over 1 if I could have only one of them?

I don't mind missing a little backstory if the graphics are better, more bug free, etc..

I like Gothic II better, as I find it more 'alive' and varied. Gothic I is a really good game, but #2 is better, IMO.

well personally I've played only G2 and I didnt feel it was a problem.

In G2 you meet NPCs, fom G1 , but they are kind enough to fill in the blanks in the conversation ("now remind me how did we know each other"-question posibilities)

Ive thought of getting G1 myself....perhaps I will someday

Hey guys.. I just downloaded and installed the Gothic 2 demo and I had a question -

Is something wrong with my system or do you seriously run like 0.0005 miles an hour?

I must...believe something is wrong, otherwise I can't imagine playing the game running that slowly! Ack!

I found the running pace similar to Guild Wars, slower than a FPS, probably a bit slower than DL.

If it is not like that, then something is wrong.

Buy any game Gothic ... It's truly the best RPG ever made.. Both 1 and 2 and I actually found the controls very likable. I even had Gothic 2 Addon imported from Germany to play it.. I've finished Gothic 1 like 5 times probably now and Gothic 2 the same. :D

BTW.. they've been saying Gothic II addon english is going to be release soon for 3 years now (

Don't you believe them.. Need to dump Atari bigtime!!!

Wow, once again I'm going to be the only person on a message-board that doesn't like the Gothic series. I can't recommend the series to anyone.

The first one has a so many problems. One thing I really hated about the first one is the horrid controls. There is this analog device that every PC gamer uses to play games, and it's called a mouse. I personally think that the developers had never heard of it, because the game has NO mouse support not even in menus. The developers must have been fan of FedEX workers, because each and ever quest has you running to some area in the game, picking up something, and then deliver it to someone. Also it felt like I was trapped into some gay Gremen porn flick thanks to some NPC that would follow you around everywhere asking every 30 seconds if you wanted to go to some place to be "alone".

To be honest I didn't play much of the second one. I beleived the promise that the developers made that the controls were vastly imporved over the first one, so once the UK version was released I downloaded a "demo" to check it out. Not only were the controls basically the same (no mouse support at all) but even a basic feature of hot-keying wasn't included in the game. Everytime you wanted to use a potion to heal yourself you had to open the inventory menu, navigate it using the horrid control sceme to the page where your potions are at, and then move the cursor to the potion to drink it. The whole process takes a good minute to a minute and a half just to drink one potion - oh and the game didn't pause when the menu was open. So if you had to heal in the middile of combat you'd take a beating and hope that you had enough heath left to take one for one minute. I uninstalled the game and deleted the "demo" off of my hard-drive after 30 minutes of playing it.

in number 1 you could cheat by opening the status screen and typeing marvin and hitng Esc. then useing ~ you could type couthpark to speed up time alowing you to run very fast ;) i am not shure but i think that in number 2 you can do the same?

Gothic 1+2 are both pretty great games, i played Gothic2 like 3-4 Times because of so less good RGPs came out the last time.

Gothic2 is just great, there are peacefull Animals all over cool and realistic weather efekts and changes between day and Night. The NPCs really seems to have a life. They get up at Morning going to work till evening than going to a tavern till night/ than go to sleep or siting at a fire and eat.
The People in the City allways talks with each other and the overall sound is just great. With EAX and 7.1 Sound it really rocks!!!!!!

You can spend hours just walking around and discover the world because its really seems to be a living world with real People who got a life and not just sit 24/7 on the same place.

Gothic 1+2 are really must have for a real RPG fan.

I would play Gothic2 first without add-on, with the add-on the difficult gets up really hard(because most fans wanted it to be harder) and you could get problems playing the first time.

And at the beginning unlike other RPGs you have to be very carefull, there are all over Enemys you cant beat with your curent lvl so you have to run away till you got a higher lvl...

@ shido

Ok the controls in Gothic 1 were a litle bit poor, but is was Piranha bytes first Game and for the first job done it was really good work.

@Shido : G2 had mouse support, u just have to uncheck "Use G1 controls" in the options menu.

For me G1 was even better than G2, i never had problems with the controls, the story and atmosphere was better in G1. =)

Mouse?!?! Who needs it ;) Seriously, in Gothic II I had the standard WASD setup, but Q and E were for turning ... I would play for hours without touching the mouse ... heck I could play one-handed while drinking coffee ...

For some reason I just like G2 more ... both are good, though.

I put Gothic II among the best games I've played (that's since 1979!).

Here's one of the greatest gaming moments in history:

If you played Gothic II then you have met the magic Golem on the mountain... he cannot be hurt by any weapon except the magic hammer. So...
I led this beast down the mountain (by stopping when he was about to turn back so he continued to follow), he followed me all the way to the city, where the guards set upon the beast! Everyone came running out to fight him! Well, as you can imagine, they all got killed, in fact, he killed the whole city! Best part was to go around and pick up all the loot... of course you don't want to do this if you are trying to beat the game since everyone that matters is dead.

I'm licking my chops  waiting for either Gothic III or the english addon for Gothic II !

AHHH! yes....gothic

of course the controls are tough and of course sometimes you need help from the forums............that is how you build a good commmunity. Now look at everybody here. postinga bout this game.

Them germans must be doing something right and this game is a cult classic.

I played morrowind and found it soleless compared to gothic. but morrowind had too much of nothing but it was still a fun game.

Gothic 2 is just excellent and minimum requirement for all the eyecandy is a radeon 9600xt, 512mb memory, athlon 2600.

hope it helps somebody

of course you can play gothic 1 on a lower end system but 2 requires more. Its not really a video card thing because gothic is cpu intensive.

Your not the only one to not like Gothic because of the mouseless controls. I don't care who likes using keyboard only, in this day and age a PC game should have good mouse support. If Gothic had proper mouse support they'd sell even more copies of thier games and that in the long run would be better for everybody. If Gothic players prefer the meh controls then whatever. I'll just wait for Oblivion. :p

I loved both Gothics--their quirky controls, the funny speeches, the accents which clearly weren't American. It all made the game seem even more like it was happening in an unusual world.

Most of all, I loved the various hacks that let me play every storyline through right (almost) to their ends, so I wouldn't miss any of the action.

Really looking forward to the third.

I loved both Gothic's. In fact, Gothic 1 was one of the 3 games that got me interested in RPG's in general. I had been an avid FPS gamer before that.

Truthfully, I still can't stand to play anything that doesn't have at least a good 3rd person perspective, if not a 1st person option (hence the reason I don't play more RPG's).

The G1 & G2 controls were no problem, as I re-map any game's controls to my preferred setup anyway. I seem to remember at least some mouse control in G1 and definately in G2.

If given the choice, I'd have to suggest getting G1 first. That way you'd know the story and characters from the beginning and let a little more time pass for the G2 Add-On to be released in English.

The Add On definately makes G2 a better game overall; (it adds as much content as we'd all like to see pumped into Dungeon Lords....LOL).

Over at RPGDot, they have a Translation Mod available if you want to get the German Add-On and install it over the English Language G2. If you follow the instructions exactly, it works perfectly. You get all the English Dialogue for the English portions and German Dialogue with English subtitles for the Add-On portions. It takes a little getting used to, but it plays flawlessley and isn't a problem after you've adjusted.

RE: Mud in G1. If you get tired of him following you around, just get him outside of the Old Camp and beat him up really good. He'll go running back to the camp and never bother you again.

All in all, I'd recommend Gothic 1 or 2 to anyone.

I'm always amazed that people find the controls so bad - they're a little uncoventional but they work very well if you take just a little time to get used to them. True, there's no mouse in the menu (is it so hard to move up and down a single column menu?) but there is mouselook in the actual game!

It's a pity players have passed over the Gothic games for this one issue but it was a matter of money - in some ways it's lucky Gothic was finished.

Re the potions - the lack of potion hotkeys is intentional - the whole point is to *not* use potions in the middle of battle. You may disagree, but PB wanted it to be more realistic. You can enable hotkeys in the .ini file if you must.

The controls don't have full mouse support. I can't remember exactly whats borked about the mouse controls in Gothic because it's been ages since I tried playing the first game but I do remember that it's annoying. I don't like using keyboard only and I've been there and done that until 1997 or something. I think in this day and age developers would have it figured out that a LOT of players like using the mouse + keyboard, so not putting in that simple feature properly is kinda stupid when your selling PC games. Better control options will only mean better sales and I sure hope that Gothic III will have controls that both keyboard only and mousers can choose from. No need to make you have to join one camp when a few lines of code would give you a choice.

Also I hated that Mud guy.

Gothic III is set for first quarter 2006. The developers mentioned having the original controls as well as more mosue support.
So everyone should be happy.

I don't get all the complaining about the controls anyways.
I'm playing Gothic 1 v1.08K (english), It's completely configurable.
You set keys to various controls, for example.

Left Mouse = Action
Right Mouse = Move Forward
Middle/Scroll = Ready weapon
Arrow Keys or WASD = Forward/Left/Right/Back
Sneak = x
Straife Left = a
Straife Right = d
Those are the most used actions, set to my preferences.

With that, you can explore the world with just your mouse.
You see enemies, click ur scroll to ready weapon.
When you fight, hold down your action key, and use forward/left/right/back (any 4 keys you want).
I can't imagine how lame it would be to mouse click a foe and watch the battle ???

Of course you can't pause during battle to drink a potion.
You will actually be challenged in these games, and heaven for bid even die, many many times.

It would be awful id Gothic went the way of Dungeon Seige. Though I enjoyed the story, I felt I was just watching everything, by clicking here and there.

Your not a warrior from the beginning, you have to train, gain experience. With that your attack motion becomes more fluid, you are developing the skill to become a fighter. Enemies that you have no hope in defeating are all around from the very start.
Approach that dark forest carefully, you see that wolf there. Maybe you can take it, but if the pack is close, you are doomed. So spend the next 5 mnutes inching closer, scanning everywhere, and save save save your game. Totally immersive. About the only release you get from tension in Gothic II is the jersey/Boston/New yorker accents of the npc's.

The only real room for improvement I see is the inventory where mouse support, selecting and customization would save time.

Get yourself these games.
The english version is apparantly set for 2 weeks after the initial german release.
