You can rest but in order to do so you must have a handy campfire or fireplace (with and flame you can interact with) nearby. You can not use the flame spouts in the Trial of Elders.
And when you rest nothing attacks you so you can rest right in the middle of an battle, heal up and continue to fight.

Sadly you can not. All of the campfires I have run across have been off the beaten path or in the rooms in the Inn (except fargrove). There is one in Skuldoon up by the Nether salesman.

As a last resort find a nice empty room where stuff doesnt spawn and leave your guy stand there overnight.. :)
Or even bring up the inventory screen and leave it sit

When in a dungeon, the place to 'rest' is right in an area where you go through a door and it closes behind you - then nothing is spawning yet. That works well in Fathien ...

on a related note, i tend to rest at night at a campfire in the woods, it seems to me many more mosters come out to play at night. Also i camped once during a battle hoping the monsters would go by morning, but as soon as i woke up they were still there.
Who says monsters are bad .. they all respect my right to a good night rest and even watch over me during the night :D

I believe the Elven Trials are... just that... Trials... they aren't meant to be very easy :-)
However in saying that, if you equip yourself with enough potions and hotkey them, you will find as you are fighting you won't get killed if you use them properly.
