Just to clarify, 'Morrowind' is the title of 'Elder Scrolls III', Oblivion is 'Elder Scrolls IV'.

But anyway, people were absolutely gaga over the game last week at the E3 expo - you should be able to find tons of impressions all over the net.

Mike LOL I missed the Morrowind in the title. Indeed the new game is The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion....

I think I need a beer. :D

TES4 is what I am really waiting for as well. The only problem I see it that it will be geared towards next-gen computers and the X-Box 360. I DOUBT that TES4 will be one of X-Box 360's pilot titles, and the machine is not going to be released for a while. This means that we will most likely have to wait until 2006 before we get it. I will definitely get the computer version so I can download and make modifications. The game will also come with the contruction set (like TES3 did). I CANNOT WAIT...but I have to. :(

Last two times I upgraded were for Morrowind and Doom 3. I swore I wouldn't upgrade for awhile but if I need a new video card or whatever to run Oblivion I'll get it. I usually don't get hyped about upcoming games but reading all that Oblivion stuff has got me psyched.

morrowind is excellent - only game that kept me up till 3 in the morning for a week straight. and as if the game (and expansions) couldn't go on forever without discovering all the places - they have over 2700 MODS on the site i go to ---i've downloaded hundreds - oh the joy. people submit new mods daily - the game will go on forever - and i'm glad

yeah that's where i go 8-) makes me want to retexture some cities myself. just haven't taken time yet. i got the balmora underground mansion - i love it, i see some people complaining that house mods are too big - but this one is big and it isn't big enough - i have every room filled, and - every floor has weapons lined up on it - a carpet of weapons..plus the chests are full - i got the furniture mod and added lots of bookshelves, they're full too 8-)

Cool E3 2005 Impressions ...

Check it out at Wargamer (http://www.wargamer.com/e3_2005/previews/elder_scrolls_iv/Default.asp)

Which is quoted at RPG as follows:Outdoor scenes will be game-generated and not made by an artist. Terrain will be based on real-world geography and will experience elements of weather and erosion by a system of “procedurally generated” programs. Other changes include the integration of the melee, defense, and magic systems which have been combined into a single system. Another item of interest is the AI. NPCs will have a 24 hour schedule and will have the ability to make choices around them. We witnessed an NPC pick up a bow, practice shooting it (poorly), then drink a potion which improved her shooting, all of which was AI based. It has the potential to be quite impressive, though we witnessed some quirky behavior when that same NPC vaporized her dog with a spell when it began barking too much. Amusing as the encounter was, it was equally impressive of the potential of the AI, though it remains to be seen whether that incident was intentionally staged or potentially symptomatic of an Oblivion devoid of value judgments.

Sounds really cool ... with some spectacular possibilities for failure!

Theres a tonnage of cool E3 impressions for Oblivion. I think this game is going to be a lot of fun. I'm happy that they've made dungeon this time that are bigger than the avaerage Morrowind tomb, which were pretty damned small. Now you can lure goblins into traps, ride horses, buy houses, use thief style sneak system, poison your blade and go on quests that aren't mindless fetching all in a world that is 16 miles square compared to Morrowind's 10. I can't wait. :D

Want some fun? There are differnet ways to play.

For instance, after I completed the game, I tried:
Being the "Indiana Jones" of the land. I grabbed the list of relics and sought to recalim them all and place them in the museum in the Tribunal module. A heck of a lot of fun. I even found other

I've heard variations such as being an abolitionist, or playing the vampire char, or playing as werewolf and seeing how many npc you can eat in a town, or .... on and on.

BTW -- defenitely get the BANKING and real estate mod. Not only is it cool to gain interest, but when you buy houses, you get transport rings. Best mod I ever installed.

GREAT game!

It is an awesome game. It's like playing a single player MMORPG to a certain extent. If they ever gave a Bethesda RPG a multiplayer option that would be a bonus.

It is an awesome game. It's like playing a single player MMORPG to a certain extent. If they ever gave a Bethesda RPG a multiplayer option that would be a bonus. I'm not big on, or all that much for MP, however if they had one town that was an optional install / download where people could meet up for trade and fight in Arenas for gold / prizes and do some quests that were only available in the town / town cypts then maybe that would be cool. Overall tho, I prefer to play solo and I like the fact that the Bethesda team is 100% concentrating on a great Single Player experience and I feel that if they took resources to make a MP element it would lessen the SP aspect. IMHO theres too many MP games out there now and very few good let alone great SP RPG's. I want Oblivion to kick *** in the SP department and if that means no MP then screw the MP stuff. Why is it that when a SP only RPG comes out people want a MP aspect yet when a MP only RPG comes along nobody says they wish it has a SP element? I guess this is why the market is flooded with all these MMORPG's.

Amen.

And, I'll get flamed for this for sure, but, in my most meagre opinion:
MMORPGs=tedium without end

Morrowind IV does sound somewhat of interest. The npc ai sounds like the characters have an attitude. Wonder what they use besides ability enhancing potions?

TES IV: Oblivion is an Xbox360 launch title. As such, they won't release a firm date until (at least) the exact Xbox360 date is revealed but by the same token, that basically ties it down to this year's "holiday season". Unless you think they will run late, as some do. ;)

So, at best, we are likely to see a 'KotOR scenario' - scramble to get the XBox version in time for launch, deal with PC for the spring ...

That would be my reaction, although some Bethesda devs have been pretty resolute that they will ship on time (whenever that is exactly, of course). I wrote an article at the beginning of the year on the RPGs we might see this year and mentioned in passing that (in the absence of an official release date), one might expect such an ambitious title to fall into 2006 (it was a rather casual observation and not meant as an insult) but one dev took particular exception, saying I would "eat crow" when it shipped on time. Hopefully that means they are well on track without having to cut corners. :)

but one dev took particular exception, saying I would "eat crow" when it shipped on time. That sounds like crow I would be happy to eat ... provided that they ship on time because it is ready, not just because it is time - or because they're contractually obligated to Microsoft for the X360 launch ...

Since there shouldn't be many differences in the code between the Xbox 360 version and the PC version (controller options, sound options, and quicksave/quickload are all I can think of off the top of my head), Bethesda may very well get both versions out on time.

My guess would be that there will be a patch released very close to that time, as well, to take care of those things that were being worked on when it was time to ship the game. ;)

Considering they said the game is done and they're now doing thier 'clutter pass' where they add all the items like books and forks to the world then maybe we will indeed see it released by Christmas. :D

The elder scrolls oblivion is Awsome I watched a movie of it and it looks amazing Ive also read the previews and it is great. And I'm very pleasd that they deside to let your character mount a horse and ride it around instead of walking everywhwere its a great idea thet all fantasy rpgs were lacking. I'm going to by it as soon as it comes out I'm sure thet it will win tons of awards.

The 2nd Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall had horses and it was poorly implemented. This was a bugfest of a game... people attack DL, but Daggerfall was a Complete Mess upon release - I was Very pissed after getting it on a pre-order! Dungeons were so large and generic with so many bugs that you could not tell if you were really stuck or there was a bug stopping you. I fell through the floors of dungeons so many times it was silly... suddenly I'm floating around inbetween graphics... what a joke that was!

Morrowind was okay... but the dungeons sucked and the caves were so generic I hardly felt like exploring them unless sent there on a quest. The shipwrecks were a nice touch and some of the cities were beautiful.
Exploring the landscape was a lot of fun, and flying above it was stunning, but I must admit... I was glad the game was over when I beat it.

Looking forward to Oblivion, sounds like they listened to the players on this one... hopefully they get it right this time.

Gorn

BTW the first game "Arena" rocked... looks very dated now, but back in the day the creaking door was tops!

Boy are you right about Daggerfall! But they patched, and patched - I remember new patches coming out every few days for months. :)

Much like this game, it was so addictive to play - and was so ambitious, that it was fun to "beta" the retail release. I remember thinking at the time that I would rather play the dang thing all bugged up than wait for the polished version. That probably says more about me than the game.

Both great games but what one looks better ;)

The SpeedTree technology of the company IDV will be used to design naturally looking woods in Gothic 3. SpeedTreeRT supports the design of highly realistic trees and plants using mathematical algorithms and frees the modellers from the need to create each individual tree.

Other strengths are the usage of only few polygons to boost the performance, seamless change of the Level of Detail (LOD), usage of wind effects and a huge database with 160 templates for plants and trees.

Besides Piranha Bytes, other developers are using this technology, too, including 4Head (Die Gilde 2), Phenomic (Spellforce 2) and Bethesda (Oblivion).
