I was really excited to run across a few games in this forum that were recommended as Independent Releases. A lot of people will not hear about games such as Mount & Blade (http://www.taleworlds.com/) or FATE (http://www.playfate.com/) unless they are spread by word of mouth.
I'm hoping that suggestions for really good games like this can be posted here so we can keep track of them and others can try them out. We don't want to let quality independently created games get overlooked, especially those that are really fun. :)

Yeah there is a thread down a bit where we were talking about those two games. I really have enjoyed mount and blade and am hoping it keeps on going and actually becomes a solid overall game.

I always recommend Heretic Kingdoms (http://www.heretickingdoms.com/) , which is a nice action RPG.
There are also the SpiderWeb software game, which are really good shareware dungeon crawls with low-tech.
More games are coming from small houses, like Blood Magic (just saw on IGN), and Seal of Evil, and a bunch of others I can't recall ... I just try to hunt around on a regular basis ...

I'm kinda tired of the whole top-down thing some RPG's have going on like The Bard's Tale and that Fate game. Needs more 3rd person methinks.

What I want to know is when all these Ultima 9 conversions are going to be finished? People start on these things and then quit about halfway through. I still haven't seen anyone fully repair Ultima 9 into an exceptional game. Also, the Dungeon Siege conversion called Ultima V: Lazarus seems to have been in production since the original DS was released...what...3 or 4 years ago. Now I'm hearing about another Ultima 9 project starting using the Morrowind engine. It would be another several years before that is ever finished...provided that team doesn't quit.

That is when they realize that they need a team of people willing to work hard for a long period of time ... for free. And that it gets harder with each new engine, and with the harder implementations (such as RPG's).

Mike Id rather have it 3rd or 1st person. The other views are too limiting and I also really don't like 2d scrolling backgrounds. If I'm playing something like Dungeon Siege where you have a party of dudes then I want to at least be able to tilt the camera so I'm not looking down. Characters, monsters and landscape looks better from a side view IMHO. I find it annoying to be playing a 3D game and not be able to see stuff properly. I dunno, maybe I'm weird or just spoiled. :p

Some of you will remember Star Control 2 and what an awesomely designed game it was and some of you won't.
In 2002, the source code for SC2 was released to the public and a group of individuals has reprogrammed it for modern day computer systems. They have named it The Ur-Quan Masters (http://sc2.sourceforge.net/) but it is actually Star Control 2.
If you have never played this game, I would suggest giving it a try. This was probably the first game to mix strategy and rpg in a space setting.

Yeah, I actually bought the game and then found that out. I wrote them an email about how it wasn't a nice business practice for them to do that, especially if people buy the game. There should be an option to turn all the stuff running in the background off.
Their reply to me was, "We'll be glad to refund your money on the game." Of course, but then I couldn't play the game since it unlocks through the internet with a code. I also found out that if you try to clean it off with a spyware detection program, it deletes the complete game and your character save. On top of that, you will only get 2 installs for your $20. You might get 2 more after that if lucky but beyond that, you are out of luck.
WildTangent could go belly-up for all I care. FATE is a great game, but WildTangent business practice is not my cup of tea.

There was another Game Like that sometime Back-can't recall the name of it now. But i was reading the Forums-think it had been released about 6 Weeks at that time- and the Moderators were responding to Criticism by sayin that it Worked since their Game had Defied the Pirates & Hackers. It was either that Same day or next Morning when this Big Post titled --Har-Har-Har -appeared. In the Text it said " You guys are so fulla Shiott! This Game was Cracked within 3 Days of its Release. For All you People that want to get rid of this Crap go to the Following Link and D/L the File. You never will have to Put up with this Crap again-just play the Game with a Clean puter. Hurry, though, cause I'm sure as soon as a mod Sees this it will be Wiped"
I didn't do that of course but i know several People who said they did. It was gone the next and last time i visited the Forum about a Week later.
But i certainly Believe that to be true-These Companys do Not stop the Pirates/hackers from Cracking the Game. All they succeed in doing is creating a hassle for the legitimate Purchaser of the Game. I simply have an abhorrence for any Company that will put anything in My Computer against My Knowledge or Assent.
Its too bad,it looks like FATE just Might be a Game with a bit of entertainment embedded in it.

That bothers me as well ... the WT driver is defined as 'harmless' on the 'malware' list, but it is there nonetheless. Also the requirement of a non-firewalled PC to unlock is a problem.
But it is less of a hassle than the Star Force system that Restricted Area (and others) uses ...
Anyway, I love the game, and noted my concerns and got on with my life. It is always too bad that we honest consumers end up paying / suffering for the deeds of the pirates.

You should play Dungeon Siege. A good idea would to buy the expansion but not the original. Considering the fact that I think that they are the same price, LoA comes WITH the original. Then download one(or more) of the 250 mods( ;) ) and get to playing. Or download one of the siegelets that is really popular(I recommend Lands of Hyperborea, as I'm actually playing it right now, but it is incompatable with any mods :))
You could also play Heretic Kingdoms, as Txa has posted previously. I rock at the game. It is pretty annoying at the start, and you can only save 200 times(and you can't save on the same file), but with all the possible combinations, you can do just about everything, from a no-armor mage/archer(take my person) to a full suit of heavy armor with a heavy weapon and a heavy shield(that would make you hit SO slow, though).

It's going to be interesting to see how much heat WIldTangent is going to take over their "spyware" business policy with a game like FATE being released. So far, they haven't really been noticed for anything much except for the fact their little games have a program running in the background.
Did you know the guy who started up WildTangent is the inventor of DirectX? WildTangent is based in Redmond, WA also.
I don't know how much criticism they are going to take on their messageboard over this but I'm sure it will be quite a lot and they have their little "fanbois" over there too. They are basically calling everyone who doesn't want to shell out the money for WildTangent spyware a pirate. You get only 2 game unlocks for your $20 and then you have to keep contacting the company over and over again if you ever need 2 more a year or so down the road. Beyond that, you're hosed and you have to shell out another $20 again. That is just a silly business practice. I hope they get a lot of bad press so they eventually have to change their skewed policy.

Aw c'mon Shock, you jump on the forum, pounding the Spyware drum and beating on anyone who disagrees with you - when they say they'll get info, that isn't good enough so you keep pounding pounding pounding until they have to lock the thread so you will STFU.
WildTangent, while I have issues with the unlock and spyware, has a great little game in Fate, and they are a very responsive and reasonable company. They respond quickly and efficiently - and honestly.
If you don't want to play Fate, go away from the forums, you've made your point and then some ...

I hope you enjoy it - it is a fun hack-up, linear and simple of plot, but with satisfying combat and some nice music. Graphics scale pretty well for a game this old as well.
As for the price, many people start at basically $0 to lower the listing fee and hope the price comes up. I typically do that and haven't been burned ... on the other hand I've gotten many games *really* cheap as a result ;)

This reminds me of a thread I actually started years ago in Usenet about how some company or other accused me of being a pirate when I contacted them regarding a game I'd just bought of theirs--and their cd code wouldn't work. CGW said it was the longest-running thread in Usenet or some such. Definitely it ran long after I stopped looking at it.
Piracy is a problem, sure. But so is privacy. And so is consumer protection. It seems to me that all the positions are reasonable, including that developers want to protect their IP, that gamers want to be able to play games w/o worrying that the developers will go out of business, and so on.
I don't know the solution, but I do know:
1) I won't buy Fate until I know my concerns will have been resolved;
2) I won't support Valve (for instance) by buying any of its games, no matter how cool they sound, until I know that it will have addressed the same issues we see here with TW.
Until customers speak up with our money, developers won't address our positions, but only theirs.

Piracy is a problem, sure. But so is privacy. And so is consumer protection. And I think that as a reactionary measure to the lack of control regarding piracy, the laws now trample on privacy and consumer protection in favor of absolute protection of corporate assets - I'm one of the biggest anti-piracy zealots I know, but I think the fact that you can end up with a larger punishment for pirating an album than for breaking & entering is just a travesty ...

Heh-that Game-Blade of Darkness- I Purched on eBay for 99cents ( Seller=Auction Canyon,Inc an eBay Powerseller) only arrived with the CD. No Box-No Manual. Guess thats what I get for Not reading ALL the Fine Print in the Sellers Description. I am having a heck of a time even figuring out the CONTROLS. They seem the most Awkard of anything I have ever come across.
Seems like you need t have Octopussy Hands too-sometimes as many as 3 keys need pressing at the same Time! Weird! No Inventory Slots? just a 'Cycle' Key for Weapons,Shields,etc--really strange. I have started the Barbarian and have yet to figure out how you determine what you can pick up-it does not show automatically on the Screen-you have to constantly press the spacebar to see--Bone,Box,Barrell,Crate,etc,etc. Dumb,Dumb,Dumb!
I have yet to figure out How you smash a crate,Barrell or use a Torch. Perhaps IF I had the manual it might make things a little Clearer. I searched the net looking for a manual I could D/L to no avail. Can't believe any seller would just sell the CD only-Bastages charged me 99cents for the CD only, $1.40 Insurance and $2.95 shipping. yet it only came in a little bubble mailer-postage $1.05-- almost seems like a Rip-Off to Me.
Anyone that has played this Game and can fill Me in on some of these things i would Surely appreciate--otherwise I am about to give up before i even get out of the Starting Area. TIA

That's the people on Ebay for ya. Why do you need $1.40 worth of insurance on a 99 cent item? $2.95 shipping and arriving with a $1.05 label? It sounds to me like they should have sold the CD for $5.36 and gave you free shipping. lol

Thats what hacks Me off so Much. When I first saw the Item on eBay it showed the Box -gave a Description of the game and Type of game. I was the only Bidder so I thought I 'Lucked' out. Now I now no one else was stupid enough to buy just the CD. After getting the CD only, I went back and read everything posted. All the way down was a tiny line that said simply -"CD only". and another tiny line that said-"Seller requires Insurance of $1.40 on all shipments. So,basically the Bastage just made $1.90 on shipping, and $1.40 on Insurance when it was not INSURED!
Other Games that were for the CD only Clearly showed ONLY the CD and Stated so immediately. This Guy Cleverly Hid all this. SCAM ARTIST!

Yeah, I know a few people that have been ripped off like you. It sucks. But then again, with the way people act these days, the thing that surprises me the most these days is that I'm not surprised at how people act.
And Shock? That's not eBay for you. That's LIFE. Anyone who wants to can slap a coat of silver-colored and -tinted paint on a ring, add somehting that looks like a real diamond, and sell it for 1000 dollars. Then, when the people start to notice it's just paint and a clear plastic thingy, they will try to return it. And guess what? Either the store has closed down or there's no refunds. They go to the manager. Guess what? The people bought it, they keep it. If they are that <supposedly> stupid to buy a fake ring for that much, they deserve to keep it. It has happened, I can guarantee that. Maybe not by someone here, and I hope not to offend anyone who has had them happen, but it can happen. But people can be nice, as well, by selling stuff for less than the retail value and making extraneous costs, like shipping and insurance, cheaper, although it seems to me there are less and less of those people by the day. It sucks, because those nice people seem to get farther ahead in life, too.

Might have to do a bit of Searching now Mike, but at one time there was a Compendium of All the Ultima Games-I think it included Ultima 1 thru 7 ( could also have included 8--I never bought it because I had already played them all so I can't be sure exactly what was included. But IF you cannot find the Compendium then at least try to find Ultima 4,5 and 6. I have seen them from time to time on eBay. Ultima 7 was released shortly after Electronic Arts Bought Origen from Richard Garriott. Garriott had already made the Framework for U7 but by the Time U8 came out Garriott was having little to do with the Direction of Ultima Games. And by the time Ultima 9:Ascension came out Garriott had already had a departing of the ways with EA Management. In U8 there was a Series of Jumping Puzzles that were difficult and boring ,to say the Least, and nothing like this had ever happened in an Ultima Game before. There was such a furious outcry from the Ultima Gaming Community that EA soon released a Patch to rectify this. U9 was buggy as ****-so buggy that its the only Ultima I never finished. Recently I found the last Patch for U9 ( V1.18 ) =18 patches, so I might patch up the old U9 and try again.
Also, there was another very Good Series of Games created by Ali Atabek called "The magic Candle". Too bad Atabek went broke and had to go to work for Sierra. He had some good ideas.

I enjoyed Summoner - pity Summoner 2 only came on on the PS2. Not sure what you mean by "living map" but it was a fun game.

I downloaded the Bonez game and the controls seem a bit funky to me. Are people on crack when it comes to configuring the keyboard and mouse control defaults for these games? It looks like a good game except for the screwy controls.

I played that for a while and it seemed a bit stupid to me. All you do is levitate stuff and there is an area at the beginning where you are levitating a potion and a bunch of junk in this one area. There is really no explanation of what you need to do to advance.

I uninstalled the Fate game demo. Like others, I redo my hard drive several times a year and am very likely to sit down years after I play a game and play it again long after I have uninstalled it from the first time I played. In the case of Fate, I would have to repurchase the game or jump through a bunch of hoops to get the code again. That is if the company still exists. BS. I pay for a game, I own a copy for my own use now and down the road or forget it.
But, guess what happened. I ran a spyware program after uninstalling Fate many days ago, and it found 385 registry entries "ALL WILDTANGEANT".
I have never had this many entries from one source found nor have I found so many since many moons ago when I ran my very first spyware scan.
So uninstalling still leaves things and I have to ask what else is still on my pc that they put there and I have to wonder if info still be sent out about my pc that I do not know. This is BS!
I would of liked to play the game but not at the price of my right to privacy and the inability to own a copy that I can install and uninstall at MY convinience now and in the future ( possibly years down the road).
Piracy is everywhere. In China, 80% of the music sold is pirated, but I do not see the music industry failing. Pirates will always pirate and find a means. Legitimate users get burned.
If the game is good, most people will legitimitely (did I spell that right) purchase it. For only $20 who wouldnt pay for it other than folks who do not want 385 registry entries even after unistalling it or having their ability to uninstall and reinstall the product when needed without the crippling policy of only two installs. DO NOT BS me about the other two installs you can request. WHO CARES! It is still crippling and techically harrassing you by making you jump through hoops to continue to use a product that you purchased. After 4 then, you are out $20.

OK, Several of You have mentioned the Game 'FATE'. Would You Mind giving me a brief Run-down on this Game if you have played it?
I believe I also read on one of the Forums that you Could Download the Game Client-something like 175MB- which would be Great. TIA
Its 3D Diablo 2 lite with more fanciful graphics. Quite addictive.
