No MMORPG with awesome graphics is going to be free. However you might try Rubies of Eventide (http://www.cyberwar.com/home.html) .
Runescape (http://www.runescape.com/) has been around a while and there is one from Italy called Planeshift (http://www.planeshift.it/main_01.html) that looks fairly decent.
You should be able to find more info here:

WoW - let's see - $50 for the game plus $15 per month.
That is not free.
There is a list here (http://www.gameogre.com/onlinerpgs.htm) that has loads of free and pay RPG's. Check that out.

OK ... I don't get it, someone has figured a way to circumvent using WoW in the way it was intended by creating 'emulated' servers? How does that work ... and how is it not in violation of the EULA / terms of purchase?
Just interested ...

Identical violation of the "CUSTOMERS RIGHTS" - DL release... ;)
This is the off-topic forum, you have plenty of DL-bashing opportunities in the main forums ... can you specify how this WDDG would work for someone who buys games and only uses them in accordance to EULA?
If this is a legal and honest way of a small community to set up a private WoW server, that sounds very interesting. I might pay the $50 to try it in that regard, but the $15 sustaining fee keeps me away.

I don't know if English is not your first language, but if it is, could you *please* make an attempt to write in complete sentences, forming entire thoughts?
Because the reason every thread you post in goes on and on is that you write cryptic little non-messages.
What I assume you said was:
- The site you posted is a WoW 'rip-off' site for people to circumvent the monthly fee.
My reasoning for asking about that originally is that if I asked for a 'free MMORPG', I would want one that was *intended* to be free, not one where you can workaround and play for free. And I would prefer to fully disclose everything in a recommendation.
This is the off-topic forum, Mike...
The END.
ps. travesty of justice
I have no idea what any of that means ...

If you want something free, go play a MUD. Nobody is going to make an MMORPG for free unless they are a millionaire and like to take free abuse.

u never kno ;) well, a decent rpg, like medieval times, or maybe oriental theme. most oriental theme games i played tho, pretty much sucked. I used to play DAoC, but now I got to save up for a car! toyota celica.. so I am looking for a good, free game to play, or a game u dont have to pay monthly for.

By the way - you asked a vague question, and everything people have posted you have said 'no' to, mainly as you've tried it ... perhaps if you list what you *have* done, people can suggest new stuff more easily?

Im thinking about getting that game.. but I dunno, I played this free trial awhile back ago, and it wasn't all that good, now people are saying how bad *** it is and I watched this clip from it and it looked way better than before.. I dont like the classes on that game though..
I've tried RYL 1 & 2, Slayers, D.O., Kal, Xiah, Tantra, and I think thats about it.

But Guild Wars isn't a *real* MMO, in that there isn't a non-combat profession progression and so on, I have heard it is more like a 'next gen' on Diablo II, but with a focus on early questing and later guild vs guild battles.

No. Guild Wars is not your traditional MMORPG where you have to walk for hours to get from one side of the continent to the other or craft for hours a day just to build the skill up 50 points. Your character can only currently go up to level 20 and spells are assigned to you rather than having to find scrolls that drop off creatures. It's very simplified.
As far as MMORPGs are concerned, I still play EQ and I play WoW and Guild Wars. I didn't care for EQ2 that much. I am most looking forward to "Vanguard: Saga of Heroes" because it is being done by the original EQ1 team. I expect plenty to do but I don't think you should be able to beam from one side of a continent to another in a flash unless a wizard teleports you there. Travel should be somewhat realistic and believeable so you can take in the land and explore while you are in certain areas. I heard that players will get mounts early on in Vanguard because travel is going back to the original roots of Everquest. Of course, there are many other elements in this upcoming game that's going to make it so much better than anything out there. Possibly enough to entice players to subscribe for years like the original EQ did.

ya im looking forward to vangaurd saga of heroes too.. looked pretty nice at gamespot.com , but dunno about it sense the EQ team is making it, well, hopefully they don't add all those expansions to it like they did to EQ

Knight Online. Totally free- you download everything.
Actually, GuildWars is for free (except the initial fee for the copy obcourse) and it HAS got awesome graphics (someone way up said that it is not possible.. maybe he was meaning entirely free..)
+ no monthly fee
+ graphics - and the engine seems to be very smooth (1,2ghz+processor)
+ now there are 60lvls, not 20 anymore ;)
+ lotsa skills
- you cant pvp while playing the rpg-part of the mmorpg, nor can you meen anyone short of your party which you can form only in town and special areas
- pvp .. you get a full character.. and battle against others..
well that's only my opinion, i don't like to pvp on newbs ^^ but the OPTION is nice.. the rpg-part is more like multiplayer cooperative only, doing quest etc.. but you are tot able to make you own imaginative story :) maybe I'm too oldschoolish (bold to say at 22^^) but I used to like those hero-quests i used to make with my friends in lineage .. quests noone but us knew of :P like killing that ugly red brute.
As to the WoW.. Mike :) u probably understand that the guy forgothisnameitsabove was meaning illegal servers. They are bugged, technically crappy and laggy with no or wery limited support. Everyone knows that. But there are more of them srvrs of WoW or Lineage2 than the original ones nevertheless. This being a official forum.. enough about it.
I like Lineage 2 very much. I think it IS a mmorpg.. although there are no noncombatant classes in there. There are a few buffers and healers and even artificers (dwarfs) but the bread and butter is the battle - tanks, damage dealers / flankers, buffers / healers.
I would certaily like that more mmorpgs would be without the monthly fee.. more mmorpg-ish mmorpgs :)
uff, amen.

Since I don't like MMO's, I didn't know a 'cottage industry' of pirated servers had sprung up, though I was assuming that from his post - I just wanted him to clarify since we were recommending something to a fellow member.
But then I shouldn't be surprised ... people will pirate anything ... makes me sick ...

@Mike
Mind if I ask.. why, short of the monthly fee, don't you like mmorpgs? Curious about that I am (Yoda talk).

Azzy was talking about a pirated WoW server. I have also seen pirated Ultima Online servers while surfing the internet. Usually those types of servers suck pretty bad because they can't keep up with each updated release patch and they try altering the game which usually ruins it because they don't know what they are doing. The WoW server he advertised above still only runs version 1.42, but Blizzard has patched to 1.50 already.
Nobody ever has the ambition to keep programming and moderating the servers for a long period of time and they usually don't stay up very long.

I played RuneScape a while back before the 'huge' improvements in graphics, and it took a good 3 months of my life :P
Another game would be MapleStory, which farily good platformer-style 2D MMORPG, and it's still in its beta stage (i think).
