Gray screen when going through checkpoints

I encounter a problem while playing PK version 1.62 which has now completely finished off my ability to play. I reach a checkpoint in the train station, when I step through it, my screen goes gray and the game dies. Previously I encountered this a few times at other levels, but this particular checkpoint does it all the time and I cannot get past this. Any ideas?

Where did you download the patches from?

I have PK Gold Edition; it came at version 1.62.

I love this game and really want to keep playing. Any help would be appreciated very much!!

Maybe this is an install bug, have you tried reInstalling?
(I know it´s painful, but it might fix your problem)

Or applying patch 1.64, try that first. :)
But I recommend that you backup your saves first.
