I received Area-51 today. Not to bad. A decent FPS, it is like back to the basics in weapons so far. Has anyone else played this?

Got it yesterday, Good Game so far. The abilitiy to turn into a mutant alien is a cool thing in this game.

...helping some neighbors in need and finishing up my Leningrad video, so I've yet to play it.
I'm guessing I would like Stalker better, but who knows until you play these things.

...impressions are that this game is not nearly as sophisticated as some of the reviews make it sound.
After watching the trailer, reading the reviews, and looking at the cutscenes leading into it, I was hoping for something equal or close to the graphic quality and playability of Doom 3, it's far from that.
The thing that bothed me most, besides the very arcadish nature of it, was the character view showing everything at what feels to be too close a distance. My eyes were going buggy from it, and I kept wanting to take myself out of zoom mode, even though I wasn't in it. This is clearly not for big monitors like I have (21"), and would soon become too hard on the eyes to play it.
Much of the way the game is made reminds me of Red Faction II, same type plain looking destroyables, very simplistic pathways involving finding a highlighted button to open a door, and even the weapons looked and felt similar.
I can't say I'd want to buy this one, as I said, Stalker may be the hot mutant game, and it has very nice looking graphics. The demo took up over 1G of space on my drive, and I'm about to get that space back by removing it, better to save it for video files I think.:D

This is not the high graphic game that Doom3 is, but it is fun. A good FPS to keep us going until the next big one comes along.
It does seem like you are in zoom mode a good part of the time. But you do get used to it and using a wireless keyboard and mouse, I can sit back a little to play.
I'm enjoying it. I am also looking forward to see how Stalker develops.

Just played the demo a few times and then uninstalled it there wasnt anything new and original in it to hold my attention for long enough. A great start to a game though.

...really don't get though, is why they put so much into fairly decent cutscenes, when the game graphics itself are quite a let down from that. They really lead you to believe with the intro you're going to get a much more polished product.
One thing I noticed about it too, was that the character movement, especially jumping, could have been better, though I did like the lean function, and was wishing they had it in Doom 3.
Have you ever played Shadow Ops: Red Mercury? It's one I got fairly cheap a while back that was better than I thought it would be. One of the best values in all the games I've purchased though is Freedom Fighters, which I picked up for under $5.
Freedom fighters is a 3rd person shooter, with a unique save/load, and squad element to it, offering much better and more simplistic use of commands than Ghost Recon, which I always have to use the map with to plot out commands, as the hotkeys never work.
I found out about Freedom Fighters from an old guy that hangs out at the local EB stores a lot, when I was in to buy Red Faction II. He appears to be about 60 at least, and has lots of games he's collected over the years. I thought I would like RF II a lot better than FF, and it did cost a bit more, but FF is much better.
This was verified after purchasing RF II by my visit to http://www.gamerankings.com/ , which rates FF at about 82%, and RF II at only 66%. Then I decided to go back and get FF, and stop worrying about the old guy's advice, which I was taking for granted.
The problem is, when you go browsing for used games at a good price, you don't always know what kind of titles they're going to have. Often times my research is done after they're bought, and I leave them unopened, retaining the receipt, in which case they can still be returned after finding they really stink.
I do feel RF II plays a bit better than it's 66% rating though, you have to read between the lines sometimes, as many reviews are skewed by poor MP support and such.

I looked at a few screenshots for Area-51, because I was on the "Err" side of downloading a demo... It looked ... Alright.
Not to bring the bad things in on purpose, but the biggest thing I noticed was that the guns textures, and the lights on makes me think they tried making them as detailed as hl2's guns. Odd thought, I may be looking wrong.
Off-Topic:
I've played a little more Painkiller today.. eugh... I'm not even 1/8th as good as I was in the past...

There would be no point in adding that to Doom 3, the game just doesn't need it.

...and is more monotonous, and that's not just an opinion. If you've played a lot of tactical military type games, especially online, you not only get used to it, you rely on it.
While Doom 3 certainly can be played by hanging back at doorways, and popping the braindead zombies as they unsuspectingly rush through, playing it with lean and attacking them more agressively would add to the variety, playability, and excitement level, as well as making it a bit more realistic.
Does it sound like I've played it online, you bet, and if it weren't for the lag and lack of lean, I'd be still playing it online.

It'd actualy be pretty nice in doom 3 for multiplayer...
