Does anyone know if there's a tutorial just to make a basic square level and place different objects in it using the editor that comes with painkiller?

i tried to view the help but it was unable to find it :S

Making new levels unfortunately is not supported by the editor that comes with Painkiller (PainEd). It can only be used to place items, enemies, sounds, lights etc. into existing level geometry.

To produce such geometry, PCF (Painkiller's developer) recommends using Maya. Take a look into your Painkiller/Exporters folder, there are plug-ins for several versions of Maya to export to Painkiller's mpk format. There you can also find an ASE2MPK converter. This means that you can use any other application that can export to ASE format to build levels. First of all 3DStudio Max of course (because they invented ASE), but there are some free applications too. For example, there's an ASE exporter for Blender that works fine and allows to produce Painkiller level (http://www.dreamcatchergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20522&page=1&pp=10#post161906). Getting lightmaps to work is a very tricky task if you plan to use Blender, but it's not impossible.

If you are using Maya (Maya PLE won't work, because the plugins refuse to work with it), you can find a detailed walkthrough of how to build a complete (very small) level in Maya and customize it in PainEd in your "Painkiller/Docs/Editor Docs" folder.

What version are you using? There's a stand-alone package of the editor for 1.3.5, it's included in 1.5 (Battle out of **** retail) and in all versions of 1.61 and higher. It's recommended to upgrade to the latest version, which is 1.64 at the moment. This means:

- Apply patch 1.61
- Apply patch 1.62
- Apply patch 1.64 (optional multiplayer update)

Then you have the following folders:

Painkiller/bin/Editor - Editor executable
Painkiller/Exporters - Exporter plugins and ASE2MPK converter
Painkiller/Docs/Editor docs - Editor manuals

If you have painkiller, not booh or other editions, the editor is a seperate download. Check filefront or google search for Painkiller_Editor_v1.3.5.exe

It contains all the docs and exporters as well

yeah i have the latest version, but none of the goodies :( lol
Hmm, sorry, but this is not possible :-/ Maybe something went wrong as you updated. I suggest you reapply the patches in the above mentioned order (this doesn't hurt and it definately results in having those additional features, I just checked again by extracting 1.61 into an empty folder).

Exact same size here. What you can try is: extract the patch into another, empty folder (it doesn't check if the target directory is correct). I did that before my last post and the editor was there. You can then just copy it to your Painkiller directory. Btw... the editor did change in 1.62 again (though I don't know what changes have been made), so probably it's the best to update to 1.62 anyway if you want to use the editor. If it doesn't work with 1.62 either, you can extract it to an empty folder too.

Edit: btw... here's what your folder structure should look like.

(Ignore the PMC and wscite folders, they are part of my modding)

Ah, sorry. I only checked for the editor executable :(. Seems like they actually forget to include the documentation and the plugins/exporters in the patches (omg). They are only included in 1.5 (Battle out of ****) or the additional editor package in 1.35. You can download that one here:

http://www.gamershell.com/download_7002.shtml (~10 MB)

But don't extract it directly into your Painkiller folder, because else it downgrades parts of your game to 1.35, which will most likely result in trouble. Just choose an empty folder and copy the stuff you want.

Sorry again.
