View Full Version : Why I am thankful for Dungeon Lords...

Why? Because after quickly losing interest in what could have been a great game, I was inspired to pick up the classic from 2001, "Blade of Darkness," and I've been playing it ever since.

Now THIS is a game. I usually hate going back to older games, but the graphics in this one still hold up well (especially when compared to DL), and the combat...wow...the COMBAT of this game is without a doubt the BEST ever implemented period for a game in this genre. Why other games haven't copies this is beyond belief.

When you kill a creature, you KILL THE CREATURE! You feel it. Their arms are lopped off, their legs, their heads....there's not much more satisfying in gaming than to go up against a nasty "traitor knight," have him call you a coward, then to take him out and lop off his head with a combo as his body is crumpling to the ground...THEN going to his head, picking it up and throwing it into a group of other traitor knights, letting them know you mean business.

This game is amazing. The story...well, therein lies the weakness, because there isn't anything close to a detailed story arc here, although there is some semblance of a cohesive plot that holds each mission together and there does seem to be an ultimate goal at the game's end...to find a long lost sword.

But THIS is how a game of this nature should be done. Incredible, SCARY sound effects, amazing combat, and...ENEMIES DON'T MAGICALLY DISAPPEAR AFTER YOU KILL THEM! You can walk back to a scene of a long-ago battle and still find the carcasses of your beaten foes lying around. Now that's realism.

Anyway, thank you, DL, for being the unwitting impetus to getting me to purchase a game I should've bought four years ago. Amazing! I'd heartily recommend it to anyone out there...

Anyone know if there was ever talk of a sequel to this? If someone could take this combat system and add a deep, involving storyline, with today's graphics, that would be the best RPG ever created....

Blade of Darkness (AKA Severance) was a fantastic game!! There is no sequel, but you'll be playing it 2-3 times I'm sure. I also liked Drakan, but I'm not sure it fits in this genre of games.
