View Full Version : Skill question: Parry
Does the skill Parry actually do anything? I have athree in Parry and I can't tell if it actually does anything for me. I have a three in Parry right now since I needed it to become a Sorcerer.

Just like all the other skills it seems, you can't really tell all that much if it's working. But the parry skill is the ability to "block" incoming attacks from enemies and not necessarily using a shield.
I've thought that it works since as you progress later in the game the enemies appear to hit you less or at least it looks that way.

The requirements for advancing to a class of your choice doesn't work as well . You may take a new class by not meeting these requirements, as for the skill I don't think it works, the thing that enemies won't hit you is due to agility att. not parry

What is the deal with requirements any way. The war witch requires heavy armor but the classes i wish to use to get there Mage/Adept/Sorcerer/Enchantress/War Witch. As you can see none of my favotit class to reach war witch gives me heavy armor skill.

You will hear a sound when you make a succesfull parry.
Your health wont go off if somebody attacks you :)

And the chances are 1:1000000000 ( not talking about using a shield )

Do you have any data to support this theory? Have you done any testing? I got the impression from my experience playing that parry did indeed work, but I haven't sat down and thoroughly tested my theory. It seemed to make the most difference early on, probably because each point raised was a greater percentage of the total.

I've taken some notices. So I think that parry directly depends on what weapon you use. I've been through the game 3 times completly and I don't know how more with characters that got stuck due to bugs. Each time playing with different classes and using different weapons. I don't remember which weapons but I'm sure it doesn't work with all of them ( especially not with the dual wielding because this is my current char. ) I'm sth about 14 lvl parry 8, agility 60. Now if I didn't notice any parrying (until now) with these stats than either I'm blind or the skill really doesn't work.
I saw parrying but it could have been when i haven't installed the patch. ( not sure)

I've noticed my own character parrying before. I didn't see any animation for it, but my character didn't receive any damage and there was a distinctive sword-clashing sound.

It might have happened.

I have heard this sound a time or two. Kind of like two swords locking together or one blade hitting the other and sliding down to the other swords cross gaurd. My Parry skill is three, so I don't hear it often. :)

I'm almost positive it works because my current char is, in part, built around the idea. I'm a Thrall Thief/Nether-guy (for what spells actually work  ). That means I depend on speed to dish out damage as well as to avoid it. I can tell parry is working because I've gone from 1 to 3 to 5 while my speed has remained relatively stable due to only a couple of points being put in agility over the same time. I can report with confidence that at 1 I'd get hit almost every time when not actively blocking with a sheild, at 3 I'd get hit maybe 60-75% of the time and at 5, probably 50% of the time. Of course, this varies with the level of the monsters swinging at me.
As for animations, look for that puff of grey smoke or whatever. I think that's the parry "animation", so to speak. You see it all the time on monsters when you "hit" them when they're not actively blocking, but you don't connect because they've parried you. At least that's my theory.

I would say the skill doesn't work.... because each character has a parry number. When you equip items with parry bonuses this parry number goes up. No matter how many points you place into the parry skill the parry number never goes up.

Interesting. I never noticed that. However, that could simply be a display/formula bug. I'm still very confident the skill works because, much like agility, I haven't added a whole lot of +parry items, yet I've seen my "parrying" improve significantly as I've added points to the skill.

Maybe the items that were supposed to raise parry actually decrease it. I happen to have a lot of these items equiped on me and maybe that's why I don't see my char. parry often. NTJedi says that it doesn't work for him maybe because he has those items on, and you (chamr) say that you are completly positive about this ( but you don't have those items on (maybe you do ). I'm not sure about this so I'll go and check it out myself.
I can confirm parry does work. I've played through the game a few times and have had many different characters and classes. there's a major difference between having no parry and having say 10 like i do. Also, those items do not decrease your parry, you just dont notice it working because there's no character animation to it. If you play multiplayer you can test out your parry skill. when you hit the other person(if damage is enabled) and they parry, you'll hear a weird sound and they wont take any damage or flinch.

If it works or not is hard to say I mean how do you know the creatures blow aren't blocked by your armor stat. Be that as it may, somewhere along the line when I tryed to increase my parry skill it no longer increases my parry stat. Either it stopped after level 8 or so or it stopped after patch 1.1. Save your game then spend some exp on parry and watch you parry stat in the lower left box and it won't change. It used to go up by 2 point but now nada. It does still go up when I increase agility 1 point ever 3 or 4 points of agility. What good it does is anyones guess in my opinion. D

I think the Parry skill works as well. You may not see any animations but, you will notice that you get hit much less by enemies if you have a high parry skill.
For example, I noticed that my first character (Deathlord) could stand still among spawned Wolves and it took quiet a while before he was actually hit/bitten.

That grey smoke you sometimes see when creatures attack you or you attack them and that sound of metal hitting metal seems most likely to be armor not parry. Again how could you possible tell for sure. I would guess when you were playing a death lord your armor was going up faster as you advanced through the game then your parry. D

You could be right. My Armour score was over 100 and my Parry Stat was 43.

The only way to really be 100% certain whether or not parry skill works is by creating a character which has ZERO parry skill and basic chainmail..... and creating another character with very high parry skill (+12) and basic chainmail.
Then have them both stand still and both get attacked by wolves. If parry does work then the character with very high parry skill should last LOTS LOTS longer before dying.
I'm currently convinced that the parry skill does not currently work.... based on my experience with characters in the game.
