Even though I only got the CD from the eBay Seller I don't think the Manual would have helped with this problem since the CONTROLS are Listed in the Game. I am playing Tabriz-the Barbarian. My biggest Problem is trying to Pick up Food. Controls say to Use/pick up either the "E" Key or the "Enter" key work. When I come across meat or Cheese I can hit either of these keys and I will EAT the Food--After that I cannot Pick up any of the Meat or Cheese still there and get in in the Inventory--All I get is Msg--"You don't need that now". Obviously You Should be able to Pick it up and it go into your Inventory -They call it "Items" . Bring down the Console and under "Items" all the Food and Potions, etc, etc, are Listed. I have progressed ( In the Starting area) to where I now Only have 4 Health Left and I cannot get back to any area that had meat & Cheese left. This Means that the next enemy I run into I will most likely Die and have to start all over again.
If Anyone has played this game and can tell Me what i am doing Wrong or not doing correctly to get Food into my Inventory I would really Appreciate it.This is driving me Banannas! TIA

Heck with it! Of All the Games I have Played over the past 25 Years-and I have played some Bad ones- This Game just Has to take the "Blue Ribbon"!
The controls take some getting used to and even after that there are times you need to have 3 keys pressed at the same time to execute certain Special Attacks-just try that! There is no Monetary System so that means thee are not going to be any Shops or NPC's to buy/sell to. There is some Semblance of an Inventory -You can actually Pick up more than One Of the Same type Weapon and Shield but that appears to be limited to TWO of Each type. After that you get Msg-"You cannot carry more of this item". Food and Potions are the only Means of regaining Your Health. The Problem here is that, even though there is quite a bit of Food around you can only Use ( Eat it if You are Low on Health) it then and there or Lose it because when you move out of that area you cannot go back. Food will not go into Your Inventory although in the Drop Down Menu Inventory?) it clearly shows all the different foods and Potions. Only ONE Heal Potion found in the Starting Area and You have to be Fast to Kill the Mob BEFORE they have a chance to use the Heal Pot on themselves. As You Progress ( all this is Limited to the Starting area -different for each type Char you play) the Mobs become a bit Stronger and Numerous so you WILL be Losing Health along the way. Another problem here is that you may be down to 40/100 health and You can Still only Eat ONE Piece of Food-Cheese restores 40 HP,so eat ONE Piece of Cheese and you are now 80/100. Try and eat anymore and get Msg- " I don't Need that right now"! WTF?
This is One Mighty WEIRD Game! After 15 Restarts I finally made it to the Area which appears Close to being the EXIT of the Starting Area. Problem is by the Time you get here you will most certainly be down to about 15/100 health and the next Fight is with a Bone Knight. Even IF you survive the Fight you are going to be left with Maybe 2/100 HP and there is NO Food around. There is-at least one more encounter with another Bone Knight and this is where I Always Die. Nothing left to do except restart the Game and Try again.
Now,IF you could actually Pick up all that Food You Leave behind and carry it with you in Tour "Items" (Inventory) you would stand a chance. It appears that You SHOULD be able to Do this but I never have been able to get it to Work.
HEHE! IF You want to make Dungeon Lords look like The "Golden Apple" then play this Weird Game for Awhile! Sheesh! Never Met a Weirder Game!

Hahah it is kinda weird and I played the barbarian the first time through and it's hard as ****. I found the best character is the Amazon as she uses those long reaching pole arms, spears and such. She also has the best dodge/roll to the side move of all the characters. I didn't like the controls at first but once I got used to locking on a target I later liked it.
You can't put food in your inventory. It would be nice if you could. All you can do is run back to where the food is and eat it right there. You can pick up potions and carry them tho and you'll need to do a lot of searching to find them.
Some of the combo's are hard to do and I found that the Amazon has some of the easier combos to pull off. I actually finished the game twice using her. I never played the knight and the dwarf I found to be a pain to play so I didn't go too far with him. The Barbarian I made it 3/4 of the way but I kept getting killed by skeletons. Maybe you should try the Amazon. ;)
Using combos is essential in killing enemies.
The game has some of the best dungeons and castle levels I've seen so far. It's a great game but like Gothic, the controls are something you either like or dislike. If you can get used to the controls and some of the weirdness, get some combos working right, use the lock-on, then you should discover a very entertaining hack n slash game.
By the way did you patch the game? Not sure if you can even find the patch online nowadays.

Yeah, the Controls have taken sometime to get used to,in fact, I have not yet fully mastered them. Especially the ones for 'Special moves'! My First Special requires +,leftArrow,UpArrow. Means I have to hold down SHIFT&+ Left and up arrows at same time ---very hard for me to do. Higher Specials are even worse from what I see in the List.

Thats one of the BIG Problems as I stated. There is Plenty of Food BEHIND Me but once I leave an area I cannot get back into an area tp eat. As for Potions-You can carry ONE-thats it. There are 5 Potions in the Immediate area I am now in but I cannot Pick up more than ONE. To Me,that is Absurd.

I May just have to give the Amazon ( ZOE) a try. I have always hated using Combos that required as many as 4 keys to be pressed at the SAME Time. There SHOULD have been a Provision to Bind each Special Move to a SINGLE Key. Hehe, lock-on,that one gave me a Fit for a very long time because there are TWO Actions labeled with the "O" Key. Took Me ages to determine the lock-on was actually the ZERO (0) key--in the Controls there is not nearly the Distinction between what they Show and what you see here between the Two.
Well, I have not Patched, the Version I am Playing is 1.0,0,1
Since it is a USED Game Maybe they Patched it but I guess I should Do a "Search" to see if I can find out.
Guess I Will HAVE to try another Char-Early this Morning while I was Playing and Fighting One of Three Knights there was a Flash and I killed the Knight and My CHAR turned Into a SKELETON. He is STILL a Skeleton and there Seems to be Nothing I can Do about it except Start over--WEIRD!!!
Appreciate the Reply Runeblade.

Well, I did a Search on the net and the Patch released was 1.0,0,1 which is what My Version is ,so whoever had the game before me obviously patched it. Good thing because i couldn't find a pach to D/L.
I would Really Like to Keep this Present Char -SARGON-Knight- ( I had originally played the Barbarian-forgot I deleted him and Started Sargon the Knight. I am nearly to the End of The Castle Starting area and hate to lose all that time. Only Problem is that he Mysteriously turned into a SKELETON and I have no idea how to get His Original image Back. Being in Skeleton Form does not appear to affect his Combat abilities but he Sure looks mighty Weird. Supposedly the F2 Key allows you to take a Screenshot but it doesn't seem to work. There is not even a Folder for it in the BoD Directory.
I read on a Few Sites that the Biggest ***** about BoD was NO INVENTORY to Speak of. The Inability to carry Food with You and the Limit to ONE Potion
at a Time turned a Lot of People away from the Game Early. Plus the Fact that Once you leave an area you cannot go back and eat all that Food and use any of the Potions that you left behind. I know I have come Close to Abandoning the Game Because of this. Apparently the Developers decided to make the Game More Difficult by doing this-I dunn0!
I really wished that I could have taken a SS of Sargon the Knight after he turned into a Skeleton and Posted it here--its Soooo Strange! Since the Developers are out of Business I can't get any help/info from them-DOH!
I Did See a CHEAT for the Game and will Probably have to resort to checking it out as it seems like thats the only way You can make it through without reloading a Zillion times and getting Lucky. Gads,If I had ANYTHING else to Play I would have dumped this in a heartbeat!

I bought and played Blade of Darkness (a few yrs back) and still have the game loaded and play now and again. I have successfully gotten through it 3 times. The only char. I did not use all the way through is the Dwarf (which I am currently working on).
I do have to agree that the Amazon is the easiest character to play through, but once you get the combos for the others, it is well worth the play time. (at least in my opinion).
When I realized that DL had some temporary problems, I stopped until it is patched and went back to playing Blade of Darkness and Rune believe it or not.
Blade does have some small inconveniences, but I feel they make the game last and last. Heck, I am STILL playing BOD,a game I bought over 3 years ago!! That is well worth $29.00 (at the time).
If you need, I have all of the patches and mods archived that were available for BOD. If you want, contact me and tell me where you want them ULed.
Stick with BOD, it is worth the effort.
Thanks
P.S. I hope that DL gets the play time it deserves. It is a great concept, awesome idea, and what appears to be a great story line. I hope they can pull it together, and or release the SDK and let the gaming community go at it.

Well, Personally I have become quite Bored with BoD.

Quote from a Reviewer:
"Why is BoD not that great of a game then? -
From all these great comments it would seem that BoD is one of
the best games ever made. But unfortunately, the game is greatly
flawed. The major flaw: lack of an involving storyline. The story is so
weak you will often get bored. You'll ask yourself, "What am I doing
here? Why am I going from place to place killing things?" Aside from
that, there are no memorable moments in BoD, nothing to get you
excited, nothing to add depth to the gameplay. The levels, although are
neat looking, do not have anything interesting in them. Find the key,
activate the switch, etc... You will spend most of your time wondering
aimlessly killing things or enjoying the beautiful atmosphere."

I'm just going to blanket copy-n-paste my 'game comments' for Rune and Blade of Darkness from another site (without 'official' reviews):
Game: Rune
Genre: Action
Sub-Genre: 3rd Person, FPS-like Hack-n-slash
System: PC
Rating:T (Teen)
My Score:3.5/5
Game: Blade of Darkness
Genre: Action
Sub-Genre: 3rd Person, FPS-like Hack-n-slash
System: PC
Rating:M (Mutiliation? Could be, but it is Mature)
My Score:4/5
Comments on both games:
Rune:
This game puts you in the body of a viking warrior, and you must battle your way back to your village to save the world from an evil destroyer and avenge your fathers' death. That's about it - from when you are dumped in the sea, your only pursuit is getting home - sure there is stuff going on in between, and you learn more about how the epic struggle between good and evil, between Odin and Loki, has come to the Viking world, and that you are acting as Odin's champion, against Loki and his minions.
As a result of this single-minded purpose, coupled with the fact that the only 'talking' done is in cutscenes with either the gods or the main bad-dude, the game never seems to take off. The hero starts in a nice village before being plunged into the ocean. I kept waiting to find another village, some people, some allies - *anything* but useless things to kill.
Blade of Darkness:
In many ways this game is similar to Rune - third person, action-combat oriented, melee focus, good vs. evil leading to battle against ultimate evil. But Blade of Darkness is different in many ways. First, you get to choose between four characters - knight, barbarian, dwarf and amazon - each with their own opening act, their own combat focus and combos and weapon specialization. That adds some instant replayability that Rune lacks. Also, Blade of Darkness features a rudimentary levelling system - one that gives you more health, defense and combat energy, and unlocks combos for specific weapons. Another significant difference is the violence and gore factor - when you can sever a limb or head, then pick up that bloodied head and use it to beat the next enemy to death ... you know you are no longer in T-rated-land.
I played as Sargon, the knight, who focuses on single handed weapons and uses a sword and shield mode. You begin in a prison cell, betrayed by a breakaway faction of knights led by a great warrior knight ... who is in turn led by an evil warlord (and if you play the game to the fullest, you will be able to find out who *he* is working for as well). Once you have escaped, you enter the main storyline of the game which is common to all character classes. This story involves rescuing the leader of the good knights, piecing together a legend of how to destroy the evil warlord, attempting to secure fortresses and temples before they are captured, and ultimately facing the source of the evil threat. Like Rune, you will not be chatting up villagers - the only non-enemies you see are dead knights littering the captured fortresses. However, the enemies you face are more varied and interesting, and the puzzles more satisfying. I enjoyed the combat system very much - you can only swing your sword so much before you become fatigued, and need to wait a few seconds to 'catch your breath'. There are built-in combo attacks which can be very useful - such as the back attack (similar to the one from Jedi Knight II) which was particularly helpful keeping yourself alive against one foe who could teleport behind you and hit with a life-draining attack. The weapon-specific attacks, however, require a much more complex series of key combinations, timed correctly, which I found to be more a matter of trial and error than precision execution. There were only two weapon combos that would consistently execute - and that was a good thing, as one of those combos was pretty much required to complete the game.
After completing both games it is clear that they are both very enjoyable, if plot light, games. Personally, I was constantly waiting for Rune to transition from the beginning to the 'meat' of the game, yet by the end, I was fully engaged. Blade of Darkness gave me a better feeling of motivation to keep going and complete the game.

I guess for me at least, it is the alure of the game, the memories it serves for me. I still enjoy the game now and again. Now don't get me wrong, it is not state of the art, nore was it in it's time, but at times I like to hack and slash with no other tasks. No 'quest to complete' or faction to join. Plain and simple, I am an old time gamer. I am content with what games are, not what they could be. And I do like a game that just offers a place to adventure and enjoy.
There was not a lot of depth to Rune or BOD, but I think that was the normal around that time. We are ina different time now, and MUCH more is expected from a game (myself included). Ahhh, progress. :-)

About the only thing I can recall for sure is that it happened when I was Fighting a Knight. Couldn't have been the first knight I encountered because I was using a Gladius. It had to be either the 2nd or 3rd knight I fought because I decided to Switch to the Mace. I had just switched to the mace and made the First Strike when the Screen Lit up like a christmas tree and the knignt went Down. It was at that point I saw I Had somehow turned into a Skeleton. I continued to play as a Skeletonf for awhile and it did not seem to have any affect on Sargon's Abilities but I decided it just MIGHT somewhere down the line so I reverted back to an earlier save. When I reached that same area again I killed all the knights and did not turn into a Skeleton so I have no Clue as to How it happened.

Hehe-I need some more Help if anyone has the time/inclination. I am nearly finished with halaf-2nd Place after starting Point. By now it says i should have the BOW,Great Mace ,Combat Sword and the Elf Sword. I have a mace but not a Great mace and i have Run back through the Entire Area Looking for a BOW at least 12 Times and have not found one yet. There are a number of Arrows in the Wall where I first encountered an Archer. I try and get those Arrows and get msg "you already have too many of this type item". Hel l s Bells, I have Zero Arrows. I can't Find a Bow anywhere and even If I could, what good would it do My since I cannot Pick up any of the Arrows Stuck in the Walls? I've never played this game, but what the hey- I think I know why you can't get the arrows. You dont have a quiver, and you need a bow to have one. :D Sad, ut you don't find that many plain quivers laying around unless they're on a corpse and with a bow.
Sigarr

Yeah, just in the very next area I ran into 3 more Archers. This time they all 3 dropped a Bow but no Quivers. hehe-I equipped the Bow and whadda ya Know-a Quiver appears on My back. Guess its a "packaged Deal"! Now I can pick up arrows-limited to TEN! Thats really stupid. Now you will constantly have to be Picking up Arrows after each Bow use. Did I mention thats Stupid? Yeah,I think I did. So far I have yet to see any semblance of a Storyline . I am about a little over halfway through the Game and its been nothing more than "Go here, kill everything, move on to the next Scenario"! I had to laugh My A** off when i got to the Mines Of kelbegen ( 3rd or 4th Scenario). At the Beginning of Each Scenario you are given some Dialogue about the Place. For the Mines of Kelbegen it was words to the Effect that " Occupied by the Dwarves fo Millenias they have developed Strong Defenses and Magics with which the Forces of Darkness Cannot overcome or penetrate"---LOL! All that only to discover in the next instance that the Orcs have completely Overrun the Mines and Decimated the Dwarves!
Anyway, I am tired of just continually going into an area and the ONLY thing to do is Kill everything in Sight and move on to the Next Place. I might as well be Playing PONG!

blade of darkeness isn't an rpg. its a slash-the-****-out-of-everything combat game with an interesting control schematic and some nice weaponry. there isn't supposed to be a story. is there?
Zyxial
07-07-2005, 03:32 PM
Well there is a story and a plot... not real deep but neither is DL's...
The controls are hard to get used to but once you do the game is quite fun...
The lack of story is well made up in how involved you feel fighting monsters and how much a wrong move can really be a wrong move...
It has more of an Indiana Jones type feel... like in the graveyard you have to shoot the ruin above the sarcaphagus to open a secret passage to get the power ruin...
There are mods like crazy out there for this game that adds many cool things... like for example the Hannibel lector Mod allows you to pick up an enemies arm roast it over a fire and eat it for health...
You will eventually be able to carry more than one potion... the 100 hp heals are not carriable ... only 500 and 1000. The reason for this is the developer really wanted to make the game hard. If you can't tell when you save and reload, it degrades your status of play by how many saves you make... So when you completed it without saving you could take a screenshot and brag... cause it really was an accomplishment...
Although not an rpg ... this game is fun... and thoroughly addictive... and proof is you said you uninstalled it a few posts ago... but are still playing it after... it is just a hard game ... all there is to it.
I have never had the skeleton thing happen to me and I play it alot and still do... however there was a mod out there for this model as well as some others. You say you got the copy from Ebay ? Check to see if it was a copy? with a printed label on it? The real CD was painted surface not label... My only other thought here is you enabled cheat mode which is very buggy in the game and can only say use it at your own risk. Or maybe it has something to do with Windows XP as the game was out like 2-3 years before xp was...
Sigarr
07-07-2005, 04:59 PM
Its the real CD alright. I hate Mods and never use one. Didn't know there was a Cheat Mode-Prolly would not use it anyway. I use Win 98SE.

not sure man... I know I had problems with certain things mostly trying to get into areas (climbing mountain sides, etc) that aren't really intended to go to anyway...
but aside from those I got thru the game and loved it. A graphic gore fest... tickles my fancy...
and for the price you paid can't complain to much I suppose.
And some of the mods really rock... the arena mods are cool... you could play vs another person direct connect in an arena (different small maps) of your choice... or you could just play sp vs spawned enemies (but that gets boring quickly)...
But anyway hope you find a way to enjoy it ... its just tough by design.
I also have most of these files somewhere if you need them... and I don't remember the last official patch version either...
the quiver is easy to refill tho... plenty of archers in the game... they shoot at you... you pick up the arrows til your quiver is full... if you get good at it one head shot kills the enemy, if you leave one extra arrow laying around to replace the one you fire it will always be full...
sorry you are finding it as fun as pong... I personally love the combat system... Even if the story is lacking... or go here kill everything routine gets a bit drab... but we all can't have the same tastes... and like I said for the price who can complain? not like you paid 39.99 for an incomplete game... oh yeah you did... DL hahaa
