DL is little more than a 'Throwback' to the Games of the early 80's --even to the latter part of the 80's where Games of this ILK ( Mazes,Puzzles, Traps, Jumping, etc, etc,) constituted about 90% of all Games Published. There are a Great many Games from this Era and Most of them done Better than DL because they are Complete as Advertised. These Games can be Bought for very little Money. I drug out DarkSpyre couple weeks ago-mainly because it was the first one I came across in the Box I opened ( I have 10 large Boxes of Games Stored in a Closet-Wife is always asking me-"WHEN are you going to get Rid of all that Stuff?" I tell her--"Someday" Hehe) and Played it. Gads, what a Difference a Real finished Game makes.
So,If You Like DL do yourself a Favor and Pick up some of these Old Games and discover just how Good a truly Completed Game of this Ilk is!

This is not flame against DL; I like the game for what it is. I would love it for what it could be. The reason that Gothic I & II have so many fans is because of one simple thing: The story. Virtually every character and NPC has some sort of story or history. It draws you in. It gives the game life and immerses you. Another aspect is that almost every character has a voice actor. If the voice acting is done well in a game, it's another way to draw in the player. There is precious little in DL and that's too bad. It would add so much more to the game.
Another plus for the Gothic series is the game world. You can wander all over seeking out hidden areas and trying stuff out. Same with Morrowind. You never know what you may find or what's going to jump out at you.
I'm no late-comer to games; I'm a 57-year-old grandfather. I've been a programmer/analyst since 1980 and a gamer since the early 80s. I'm also a fiction writer of sorts and know what it takes to draw people in-- a good story.
Movies work the same way. You can have all the car chases, gun battles, CGI, explosions, monsters, and skin you want, but if it lacks a basic intriguing story, you're SOL.

I'm of the opinion that there are far too few games in this genre and even fewer that are excellent.
DL has it's shortcommings, but it IS playable and provides enjoyment.
I also fly R/C Airplanes and there is a popular simulator program availible (one of several) that works well enough, but has many issues and IMHO, sloppy programming. Very few complaints in the R/C community and this piece of software costs $200+ usd!
I can imagine if it had been sold as a game, there would have been a crazed mob with torches, swords and stones, hunting down the programmers (and publisher) for revenge  with me at the front.

I'm another old-guy agreeing.
This game is like the old days...but not good enough to be great.
The repetition and lack of anything new is becoming tedious.
But...until something better comes along, I'll slog through it.
Dreamcatcher should not be satisfied with 'OK because of the old-days.'
Side note - I notice that if you save and restart, the 'random' critters are different than the original path taken.

I saw an interview with Steven Spielberg recently and this is how he feels about movies. He said he is more interested in someone's ability to tell a story than in their ability to place a camera or use special effects. Computer & video game creation is closely similar to making a movie. It's an entertainment medium.

Unfortunately for me, I am unable to really get into any game that isnt multiplayer. Not to say that I always have to play it multiplayer, I can play by myself, but the game has to at least have multiplayer for me to be interested in it. Theres a lot of games out there that looked cool and I went to try and then saw there was no multiplayer option and immediately lost all interest. Im not sure what happened, I used to play single player rpgs all the time and liked them. Oh well. This is another frustrating aspect of DL. It DOES have multiplayer but it doesnt really work, irritating. Actually in the last few days I have been able to play over the internet with my 2 brothers with a minimum of lag. Its been tolerable. Hopefully we wont run into any game stopping bugs but theres no guarantees of that.

I see someone who have talk about Dungeon master in this topic...
I just want to say that's there's a long time i haven't play a game like dungeon lord.and it really make me feel like i was playing in my young day to Dungeon master (not excatly the same type of game) Do you remenber this hit?
Well i have only crawl in the sewer of fargrove and i am really happy of these few hours of playing.
The character upgrade is really addictive and the actual bug does not really mater.
Finally like some of you said DL make think of the early years of video game(exepted for 3D ;) )
Well maybe this game with a little mod could be called Dungeon master 3D :) .
But in anyway the first few hours of play were great i am nearly level 9 and i have only explored Fagrove sewer so i will go back to game now..
See you all.

Dark Queen of Krynn.Dragonlance. I loved all those old SSI DnD games. Taking your party from one game to the next was great. I haven't really played any games that capured the feel of those since then. I think Troika's Temple of Elemental Evil tried but...
Well, lets just say it didn't quite work out.
What's wrong with elemental evil?

Hmm. Is the ToEE you are talking about the newer one? Yes, it's quite a harassment to play, and while I liked the "5-foot-step and not get attacked" rule, the enemy'd come right back up to you and beat you to death! I didn't like that much, but I didn't totally hate it. It is a D&D-type game, which is my favorite overall type of RPGs.
Yeah, the DnD game ToEE had it's faults for sure. Nevertheless, I have ta say Bugman was being a little harsh on it.
Troika was having issues, of what nature I'm not sure. At any rate, they're now outa the game, so to speak. It's a shame, I always thought their heart was in the right place; Like I said, ToEE seemed to be an attempt to recapture SSI's old magic. Nevertheless, with the fan patches folks have done for ToEE recently it's actually quite together nowadays. It's just that there was very little offical patching ever done.
From what I've heard the blame rests solely at atari's feet on that one. If that's true though, I wonder what happened with Bloodlines. It suffered from numerous problems at release as well, and saw even less patching. Don't suppose it matters anymore though.
This whole "hurry up and release it/this needed more work!" thing might be a small part of the problem. I'm so happy that "Dark Corners of the Earth" keeps pusing back their release date. While their official board is awash with folks screaming for them to put it out, those same folks will berate them for releasing it with one bug. Presently, it's set for Q4 2K5 I think. While I would like to play it now, I'm confident they (devs/pubs) won't release it before it's ready. If Troika could have managed that with the last two games they worked on, they'd probably still be around.
