"Gothic" and "Gothic 2" would be good choices. Then there's "Morrowind" and it's two add-on's.

"Dues Ex" was good, though more of a shooter and "Arx Fatalis" should'nt be forgotten. Going back a little further, there was a game called "OutCast" (NOT Jedi Outcast) and another called "Crusaders of Might and Magic" (short).

There are plenty of other RPG's, but I'm not sure of any other's with the 3rd person POV.

Try Runescape it is a little out dated but it's updated every few days you can be a member or non members get speceal features and pay $5 a month($60 in a year ;) )u dont need any soft ware go to "www.runescape.com" if you have dsl/cable it will load fast but dial up it takes 10 min each time they update(give of take a few minutes for size of update ;) )
Hope this helps :)

EEuu, that runescape deal is too similar to HL2/valve/steam, etc. It's like a mortgage that takes 35 years to payoff. In the end, you pay 3 to 4 times the the original cost. VERY SMART!!!

Eh? I have no interest in budget MMOs but you only pay for the months you play. I don't get the Steam thing at all - you can buy HL2 for the normal retail or there are reasonably priced bundles with a pile of other stuff included. What's wrong with that?

The Gothic series is as close as you are going to get to DL (except superior in almost every way ;) ). 3rd-person fantasy action-RPG. Otherwise, Arx Fatalis, Ultima 9 and Morrowind would be next in line.

You dont have to pay for runescape. Paying gets you more stuff and a bigger playing area and access to some exclusive questions. i was a member for a month and it wasnt different enough to warrant further payment. Im almost level 70 on there and total level over 600 and had fun on free.

Here's a game that many overlooked... not really an RPG, but a great story, plenty of action... and humor galore: "No One Lives Forever"
A spy spoof with a woman secret agent first person shooter... kinda like a Half-Life light.

"Deus Ex" must be played too... not the crap sequel "Invisible War".

Gothic 2 is a good choice. The Add-on will come out soon in English so you got good timing :)

You can try Guild Wars, its a MMORPG like WoW (with better Grafik) but you don't need to pay every Month (just to buy the Game)
Since DL is........ i startet to play GW and its pretty fun to play :)

Just thought of a couple more.

Drakan's a little dated, but not bad. And you should definately play "System Shock 2", even if it does lean more toward being a FPS.

You'll definately enjoy Gothic 2, but do yourself a favor and get the Add-On. It adds like one third more to the game and makes it feel even more complete!

Are there any cheats for the demo of gothic 2?

Two of my favorite RPG's of all time is Fallout and Fallout 2. You can probably get them in a bargin bin somewhere for dirt cheap, and it's replayablity is vast. They are both non-linear and have mulitiple endings depending on what actions you have taken in the game. IMHO they are two best made RPG's. And of course Torment (made by Bioware as well) is a pretty good RPG as well.

The best thing that came of my purchase of DL was the advice here from knowledgeable gamers concerning Gothic 2 and Fallout.

I'm currently half-way thru Gothic 2 and have the dual jewel Fallout 1 and 2 waiting in the wings.

My thanks to the great gamers here!

I have to agree, there are some great games I never knew existed before I visited this forum. I just got Gothic 2 this week. I almost didn't buy it after playing the demo (gameplay issues), but the persistance of positive feedback here made me break down, and I have to admit once you get used to the controls it's a great game. I can't forget Mount & Blade either, I don't think I have ever gotten so much enjoyment out of $11 in my life.

Super Smurf...you can change the controls in the options menu for Gothic 2. The designers themselves prefer the older Gothic 1 controls...which are a bit clunky until you get used to the way they work...

...but the devs did provide "one-click" controls that you can use.

If you go into your Gothic 2 directory there are a number of useful (to me) changes. I activated the "hot keys" for drinking health and mana potions during combat...increased the "blood level"...and activated the quick save/quick load options.

I've played through once (as a Paladin), and I'm halfway through a second adventure (as a Fire Magician). Nary a glitch so far. Lots of people/quests and events that are character-specific.

G2 is, to my particular style of play, a far far superior game to DL in every respect. But that's just me. Some folks find DL to be a good/great game.

Ultimately, I suppose, it's whatever floats your boat...

I'm near the tenth trip through DL single play and am getting tired. Played the Gothic 2 demo and loved it. Ordered the game and hope to have it the next few days. Wonder why nobody ever complained about no customization in G2, and the fact there not being more character races besides the one?

GK...I imagine someone has complained. No game is perfect.

(Well, except maybe for the original DOOM.)

In fact, in both Gothic 1 and 2 your character is never even named!

The only thing I can say is that SOME games are a labor of love. Others, just a labor.

For me, the release of an incomplete and bug-ridden game like DL says that neither the creators or the publisher cared about their own creation. Otherwise they never would have released it in such a condition.

And, frankly, if THEY don't care, why then should I?

Mostly because Piranha Bytes never promised those features. The character customisation in DL is symptomatic of an unfinished and ill-conceived design. People do sometimes complain about no character customisation in Gothic but it's a pretty insignificant issue when you are immersed in the brilliant and living gameworld.

Which of these games mentioned is 3rd person?

Gorn
07-17-2005, 07:46 AM
Gothic 2 is 3rd person... and it can be played 1st person... I've found 1st person is only helpful to avoid falling off cliffs and other times when looking down or past bushes is needed, but there's no doubt it was intended to be a 3rd person game.

Here are a few of the crpg/hack&slash games that are not listed often that I have in my arsenal I can load up and play when I get the urge to do so. The first is a game called "Summoner", the 2nd is "Rune", the 3rd is "Hexen 2", and the 4th is "Heretic 2".All of these games IMO are excelant and lots of fun to play.
