You should really connect the two computers in a different way Direct LPt or serial often doesn't work well with games. If they both have NIC network interface cards Ask the local shops for a cross over cable(cheapest). If you don't have nics in them or local shops are clueless (some hire people that are like that radio shack comes to mind when I was looking for such a cable), You can buy a package that is for a home lan at staples/office max or such, They have packages that even includes everthign need but the pcs of course... They have some that include nics (you'll have to install them into computer which isn't hard), the switch/hub(switches are better), and the cables needed.

Anyway, Can you see the two computers through other games? Just hooking up cables doesn't make them on a LAN a lot of setting have to be in effect and such.

the first problem is there are a LOT of things needed to make a network work correctly.

1 you need a NIC (Network Interface Card) in both computers. Note: most newer computers have these on their mother/main boards.
you can also get wireless, and USB versions of these devices 10/100 is the most common wired speed version.

2 Both NICs need to support the same network type. Note Ethernet is the most common (its HARD to find any other type but they DO exist)

3 both NIC's need to be properly configured to talk to each other.
Getting a gateway/switch device resolves most of this issue (DHCP is great for the casual user) and gateway devices are pretty cheap anymore. Plus it makes broadband internet cheaper in the long run if you have multiple pc's (you hook up 1 pc to their EXTERNAL modem when they do the install, then unplug NW cable from the back of the computer and plug into the "UPLINK" port on the gateway. and plug the computers into the gateway device's switch ports)

3B both computers should have IP addresses that look like XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX all but the last group should be the same, and each group (XXX) will be a value from 0-255

4 to ID the Network Port it is 99% likely to be an RJ45 port (looks like an 8 wire telephone jack)

5 windows computers SHOULD be able to find each other on the network. If they can you KNOW it works
