Can't speak with Vartugg to get the password for Council of Stone :(.

Ok have a bad situation. My cousin and I have been playing multiplayer game and this is where things started to go bad. We did the Mara's Letter part but he went through and spoke to her before I could finish speaking to her so he got the letter and I didn't. So the first time he was able to speak to Mundruff and got in to be able to talk to Vartugg. And I was able to run in with him. Well after getting his quests and completeing them the save game got screwed up my characters stayed the same but his didn't. Somehow the Mara's Letter part didn't stay flagged as completed and also it totaly locked him out of being able to do any Rogue class progression from that point on.

So now we have 4 Relic's all placed in the tome and when we go to try to speak with Vartugg all we get is Mundruff giving us Trade as an option. He doesn't say anything about him being on vacation just Trade. So now I can't find a way into that closed door to get the secret password to give to the Council of Stone.

Anyone have any ideas or heard of this happening before? Thanks in advance for any help.

Similar thing has happened to my wife and I. We've placed the 4 artifacts and gotten Vartugg's eye from the tomb of souls (sounds like we got a little farther than you). I've never had any option other than 'Trade' with Vartugg's minion but my wife has the ability to get him to open the gate to allow us to speak with Vartugg in the past. Well I have Vartugg's eye in my inventory and it is a no drop item. I still have the quest to place the vial of blood in my quest log but my wife doesn't. Yet when we went to see Vartugg after placing the 4 artifacts and collecting his eye from the Tomb of Souls, his minion tells my wife that he is currently off on some buisness.
