Help needed with catacomb level

I just bought the game today and I am already stuck in the catacombs,
it is the tuff guy, a guard from the flame pit , I waisted all my ammo
over and over, I can't beat him. Many times I fall into the pit.. the end.
How can I get out of here?

It sounds like you have found the Vamp.

Shoot the wooden star on the roof of the cave above the fire pit.

Then stand at the very edge of the out-cropping. The Vamp will come to you and the light from the now broken star will cause him to explode.

There are 3 ways to get rid of him:
1) allure him to the source of the light that falls down from the wooden star.
2) Turn into demon before entering in his chamber.
3) You can use a cheat "pkweapons" - you can chaingun him down to the lava, this way is the most unaccessable, but very fun.
I hope you are playing on Nightmare, if not, you will miss the prison level.
I vote for Nightmare!

O, by the way - there is a way from the pit, if you strive on low res, you will succeed, don't give up!

I never heard of the third one (nice), but there are two other methods:

4) Look for a place (climb the walls to the left or right) where he can't hit you, then mount the laser beam of the Painkiller weapon to the floor. Wait until the boss walked through the beam a lot of times, eventually he will die (really works but takes ages!).
5) Download and install Powermad, press right-shift + V :P

Wow, and i never have heard of what you said about pklaser, i thought he is immortal like a real vampire!

No, he just has 99999 healthpoints ;). Therefore it takes a while with the laser, but it actually works. Someone made it that way and posted it here, I tried it myself afterwards.

As you can see there are many ways to complete a level. Being creative helps.
