Hello all,

I mostly stay quiet and just lurk on these message boards.... eternally hoping to see the fabled 1.4 patch appear.

Several posts have talked about independent RPGs and oldies-but-goodies, so I thought I would mention one that I have a blast with. It's called Demise and it has been around for years. It used to be called Mordor.

It has extremely dated graphics, but it's a dungeon crawl to the extreme. Check out this link to learn more about it:

http://www.pharaoh-productions.com/demise/intro.php

There is only the slightest of story or plot, but it is suprisingly deep (in character development). Basically it's a "kill everything, collect bounties, solve the very thin quests, and make your characters as powerful as possible" kind of game.

When I play it I feel schizophrenic. Part of me sees this somewhat dated game with not much in the way of story or purpose, while another part of me just can't stop playing. If you decide to buy it I would recommend getting the boxed version with the update. I think there is a link somewhere on the website where you can buy it from a place called Decklin's Domain.

It's the kind of game that you can play for 10 minutes or 10 hours and feel satisfied with both.

Let me know if any of you have tried it and what you think.

I forgot to mention some of the interesting features of Demise. If you are playing single player and one of your character dies in the dungeon (you can have a party of up to four), you actually see him/her fall to the ground. You then have to have one of your other characters pick up the dead character and carry it back to the town, where you can pay to resurrect it.

Another cool thing is the fact that you can start the game as any of your current characters. This means that if your party steps on a teleporter and they all get separated (which has happened to me a couple of times), you have to get each character back to town successfully in order to join them back together as a group. This requires you going out to the character management screen and choose each character singularly and make your way back to town with each one.

One more thing... you can get denizens of the dungeon to join you. So sometimes you will enter a room and the monsters in it will say "can I join", and you can add them to your party.

There are so many other little features that make the game so much fun. LordFess, if you remember any of the other interesting features, please list them.

I've talked about it so much, I think I'll play tonight :)

Another Fun Indie RPG

I have seen that Term "Indie" several times now on this Forum. Pray Tell, WHAT does the Term Mean? I have no Clue.

There's no specific universal definition but it means a small "independent" developer with limited resources. It's most often applied to small devs who release titles on the 'net with no publisher backing, although sometimes it is used with niche retail titles.

This game has been out for years but is popular because of all the stats and gameplay. Fans have been working on a free expansion pack for this game for quite a while now. You can buy the latest updated version online for around $20 and there are still servers where you can play online. I would suggest visiting their forums: http://www.pharaoh-productions.com/phpbb/public/

Make sure you patch up demise to its latest version.

When released in 2000. It was just as buggy as DG. But after a while of "Fan based patching." The game Then actually became a classic. And they seem to be "patching" the game still.(note: Proberly adding the expansion pack as well.)

The maker of the game. Promised that after "horizons" was made. Then it would become open sourced. Well it never happened, and it is still is up for "sale".

For me, The game was too "hard" on newbie's. And While Many loved it. The Bard tale like format played out in "real time". Didn't appeal to me at all. Especially when my characters would walk through the door and become stoned. All in a second. (Before you could "pause" it.)

Or I transported into "solid" Rock and killed my level 100 Characters. ;)

If I remember right the "maker" of the game. Made the game based upon a single person's Large investment in it. And when it didn't pan out, he ditched to greener grounds. (of course, This was a couple years ago. So my memory might be wrong.)

And yes, I ordered it when it first came out as well. (You would think I would learn to wait until the game was truly "fixed". And then buy it. But "no", I make the same stupid mistakes. To the same "Empty" promises.)

Another RPG lemming falling off a cliff. Splat!!!.

:( :( I reinstalled the game last night from my cd but could not get the game to start up.So,I looked up the game on Fileplanet and found a patch for the game.I dloaded and installed the patch and was then able to start the game with no errors coming up in the initial start up process.....I then thought well I should go to the websight Xyyth gave and pay the 20 bucks to get the latest version. I downloaded it and unzipped the files .....The instructions I got in the email they sent me with the key were kind of confusing cuz on one line it says you can upgrade ver.1.00xx.....but then on the last line at the bottom it says to uninstall the game prior to installing the new version....so I thought to be on the safe side I would uninstall the game and then install the new one.
When I went to install the the new version I saw it was set to install to a differant location on the HD than the original game which I thought was strange. I started the game up and during the initial loading of the game I got an error about active x.... and there was no music playing when i got to the main menu......Is there another patch newer than this one that might fix the problem? I sure hope so... :( :(
