how can you tell the depth of the subs so you can set the depth charge depth

You cant, its all based on your judgement.
There are ways to guess the depths
There is a bug to tell the depths
There is a limitation in the design code so you dont need to know the depths
1: Take some subs for a few runs and time how fast they dive at different speeds.
2: Bring up your binocs, liik in the direction of a sub and say "engage" "engage target" in your microphone, and look for the distance in the log window (the further away you are from the sub the less is the depth.
eg: if youre right above it then its pretty accurate, if you are 400m away and the distance is 500m the sub is at 300 (simple math (a2+b2=c2)) :)
3: just set all your cans to 250m aas a limitation forced the developers to make them explode on contact aswell as on depth, so if they hit anything on the way down they'll go off.
