A friend of mine got me interested in a few great board games lately and I wanted to pass them along. These are in-depth board games that you would get at a hobby shop and not something you could run down to Wal-Mart and pick up. They are also a little more pricey but, I tell you what, they are a lot of fun to play:

1. Puerto Rico (This game is constantly listed as #1 out of thousands of games rated. It's pretty much all strategy and no randomness. It's also best played with 3-5 people.

2. Runebound [2nd Edition] If anyone has ever played the game Talisman, you will be somewhat familiar with this RPG/Adventure type board game. A lot of people are saying it's a lot better than Talisman, especially the 2nd Edition which was just released this month.

3. Twilight Imperium [3rd Edition] The more players, the better with this game. TI3 is an epic empire-building game of intersteller conflict, trade, and struggle for power. Players take the roles of ancient galactic civilizations, each seeking to sieze the imperial throne via warfare, diplomacy, and technological progression. This is a consistent Top 10 Rated game.

4. War of the Ring If you liked "Lord of the Rings" (and even if you didn't like it), you will be blown away by this game. War of the Ring is usually playable in under three hours but can last longer if played with more than two players. In the game, players will either take command of the armies of the Free Peoples or the dark host of the Shadow. Over the course of play, armies will clash on the field of battle, while a brave group of companions, the Fellowship of the Ring, advances towards Mordor. It is totally badass.

5. Arkham Horror Those of you who love the horror of HP Lovecraft and love solving mysteries and working cooperatively will love this game. You can even play solo (preferably with 2 or 3 investigators to keep the play balanced). In this game, you and the other players work together to solve mysteries and close several dimension gates before one of 8 random evil Ancient Ones pass through. You win the game by either closing all the gates or by defeating the Ancient One if it should pass through. You lose by getting all your investigators killed. This game has tons of cards which means it never gets dull and is never the same game twice. Check it out.

Finally, I would like to show you where you can get these games over the internet for a reasonable price. At least, this is where I have researched the best deal:

Thought Hammer
http://www.thoughthammer.com/

Their office is located in Austin, TX but their shipping facility is in Lubbock, TX. I let you know that so you can determine about how long your order will take to get to you. I live near the Dallas area so it only takes 2 days for me.

Anyway, for those of you who are interested, I hope this information has been somewhat useful. Have fun!

OK. I can't resist. I'll show some of my board game geekiness here...

Axis & Allies: the base set, not the European or Pacific sequels. So many goofy strategies you can try. A classic.

Samurai Swords (was Shogun): Try to dominate fuedal Japan. if you can get 4 or 5 players, lots of fun wheeling and dealing can go on.

Divine Right: fun fantasy based war game. Too much luck involved for some folks, but lots and lots of variety.

Magic Realm: a very in-depth and innovative RPG/Board game. Again, the more players, the more fun.

King Maker: War of the Roses. Poorly written rules and some awkward game mechanics, but very different design and lots of possibilities. Again, the more players the better the game gets.

Hero Quest: Really fun board-game-based dungeon crawl with pretty neat miniatures. Has 7 expansion sets to keep the fun going. Can get pricey to collect, though.

...ok. I'll stop now....
