Dishonesty In Times Of Disaster

Regrettably during these times of disaster, there are always those who will seek to fraud the public.

The latest scam is an email that appears to be sent directly from the Red Cross requesting donations for the victims of hurricane Katrina.

The site appears very authentic, including the "secure" symbol at the right corner of the page.

However, the origin of the site has been traced to Brazil.

The Red Cross has stated that it never directly solicits funds from donors and that it would never directly send emails to anyone requesting assistance.

Should you receive such an email, please DO NOT respond.

That's bad, but not as bad as New Orleans residents shooting at police helicopters and rescue crews. Are those people totally nuts or what? They are making a bad name for themselves and acting just the opposite of the helpful people during the 9-11 crisis. Those miscreants need to get their act together. 2. Are below poverty level, having difficulty buying food each week, with no way in **** to afford a bus/plane/train ticket.

I know this is an offensive subject to some, but I have to agree with this statement posted in another thread:

"Get back at society?" You mean the society that gives you, for free, 12 years of education? Whose cops patrol your streets and whose taxpayers provide billions in welfare payments, health care and other benefits? Not to mention billions in FEMA money? Is that the "oppressive society" you have in mind?"

As sarcastic as that is, it is very true. It's very tough to feel sorry for people who misuse the system or doesn't use the system at all and then on top of that, doesn't heed the warnings to leave the city ahead of time. They brought their own destruction upon themselves by their own inactions...in life and in times of disaster. That's the reality of it.

I can't defend everyone in America who is below poverty level, but seriously, sometimes you really don't have a choice. I can remember when my husband left me with 2 kids, no job, no education beyond 10th grade and no job skills. I had been with him since age 14 and was pretty darn stupid in the ways of life. :) If a disaster had struck in the 6 months it took me to get into school and find a job that would hire me with no skills... I'd have been pretty screwed too. Most people don't want to see themselves stereotyped, I don't think stereotyping the poor of our nation just for being poor is fair to them. They're human first you know...

America will help the people affected by the hurricane just like Europe will help those affected by the floods there recently. Some people will never be fully happy with either.
It is unfortunate that the rescue efforts in New Orleans were late in coming. Hopefully lessons will be learned and the proper heads will roll. There is no mystery why the poor were the last to escape the city. They are poor and couldn't get themselves out. There was no malicious intent just a lack of foresight, creative thinking and too much bumbling bureaucracy. D

We have escaped government lies and oppression from second and third world countries AND governments of the first world category yet they too are corrupt in the worst way.

I’ve been discussing politics with Europeans in forums since before Bush was in office and there are plenty that hated us since before then. He and the Iraq war are just there latest excuse to badmouth us. World politics is like a giant game of king of the hill. Everyone on the bottom is trying to knock the guy off the top, which happens to be us. For a while the Russians were up there with us so all the western focus was against them. Now that we’re the only ones there other countries are going to find ways to resent us no matter what we do. Look at history, anytime there was a sole super power they always take the blame from everyone else.

BTW, anyone who thinks we are doing the wrong thing in Iraq, go talk to an Iraqi about it. I have, I was there, and I have known someone over there since the invasion (that’s when I was there), and I even have friends there now. Guess what when we first invaded, they were overjoyed, even now they are still thankful for what we are doing. Of course they get frustrated at times, but they are intelligent reasonable people and they understand that this kind of transition is a long bumpy road. It’s sad really how some people only care about criticizing Bush, and don’t seem to give a sh*t about the Iraqi people and how they might feel about it, the war effects them, not you.

Actually, they are right we hurt more than help and stick our noses where they don't belong, just so the people up top can get money/keep funds from being redirected. IMHO we shouldn't of been in any war since WW2. In vietnam we even vowed never to get involved in civil wars again.... guess that didn't last long. I pity them, and don't want to hear them complaining about it. But I am human and have a heart. New Orlean was built where a natural lake used to be, so it being put back into balance... Well I never would of lived there myself... You must also consider the amount of Hurrican reports that turn out to do little damage, a lot of people probably stayed thinking "it couldn't happen to us". That is part of the american belief system and I'm not too surprised that few evacuated, the american society is all about possession and money... sadly so... but that makes people less likely to evacuate and leave everything behind.
