I desperately need help. Am part way through having just talked to the guard at the wall in Barrockstadt and left his room to return to the train when the program went bonkers. Nothing moved but the cursors and they left ghost images all over the screen. Went back to the previous save and tried again and this time the program kicked me back to the menu to play before I got to the last place it had crashed. What's going on? Am running the game in XPPro. This forum would not let me post on the Technical Support topic.

A little more info on your PC would be helpful, I say this because it oddly enough doesn't sound like " what a person can expect from a DC title ". Mind you I am going out on a limb with what little info you have provided, sooo I could be completely wrong.
" Program went bonkers & cursor left ghosts " sometimes means you have way to many processes running ie: check the task manager, I usually have about 11 processes running when I 'log-on' with my gamer profile, but if I just boot-up and hop-in with the default profile, my task manager has anywhere between 19-24 processes running.
Then there is the question of how much ram are you using, and is it all of the same type ( not several with different amounts ie: 64mbx2+256mb or assorted brands, thats fine ) such as PCI 100, PCI 800 etc...
Then I have to ask, are you using on-board video? as opposed to using a card. Then there is the classic " are all of your drivers up to date?" and if so, are all of them WHQL certified.
There are some who are of the school of thought that I used to subscribe to, and that is : WHQL is just business shenanigans deigned to steer business to Gates's buddies. I was very mistaken when I believed that. I used some 'beta' drivers a while ago and that gave me a massive headache, but when I switched them to the latest WHQL drivers, my probs vanished, and that made me a believer.
The main reason to have WHQL is if you are one of the many people who actually did install SP1 & SP2. Those 2 service packs were created to NOT have ANY conflicts with ALL of the WHQL stuff. But if you haven't been bothered to do so, and are sticking with the bare-bones WinXP, then beta drivers should not have any signifigant conflicts, but you never know since "betas" are in effect an un-finished product. Some peopl claim that DC is the biggest distributor of 'beta products'
Just a few things to look at till we as a community get more info about your PC, but as of this moment, to me, it sounds like a hardware/O.S. issue as opposed to an issue with your title.
BTW what is the title you are having problems with? Are there any patches? And does this problem occur on any other titles? I never heard of this Syberia game. But a little more info, and I am sure others in this community will step forward to assist you. Gotta remember no-one wants to look like an idiot on-line and get flamed on threads, so give them something to work with. (Me, I dont care how I look online, so I always give my 3 cents, because I remember what it was like to be a nO0b the very first week I hopped on the internet, most of the people holloring STFU and such are just trying to stroke thier egos, just ignore em)

Make sure the CD is clean, too - and your CD-ROM drive. Amazing, what a difference that can make.

Thank you, Thank you, all. The bad news is that I must truly be a "noob" (whatever that is) because even though I've "used" these infernal machines since the first IBM was dumped on my desk 30 or so years ago, I still haven't got the foggiest notion of how they work. So, much of the advice I get is usually not intelligble to my little gray cells which are approaching 80 years of hard usage - well I thought it was hard. According to a Belarc Computer Profile Summary I have a total of 384 megabytes of installed memory in four slots, two with 128 MB and 2 with 64 MB but don't know what types they are. The processor is a 1.40 GH Intel Pentium 4. The video card is a 32MB NVIDIA GeForce2 MX Graphics Accelerator. When I checked the task manager I found I had 38 tasks running. Question - can I turn off some of them and how do I know what I can? Finally, I checked the Dreamcatcher site and could find no patches for the game.

The good news is that I've got the game running well again and don't know quite how I did it. I'm prone to becoming very impatient when game characters have long talks and have to run back and forth a lot so am always looking for short cuts. I must have done too much of that and got some things crossed up within the game. I went back to a saved game and started out going slowly, carefully retracing my steps, doing all the conversations to their bitter end even though I may have heard them all before and - Voila! - have had no more trouble. In any event, I do appreciate your taking the time to help me.

Syberia is indeed maddening in that regard - but if you made it through all the foofaraw at Barrockstadt with the Sauvignon and the money and the berries and the stationmaster and the birds and the Sauvignon and back to the stationmaster and the berries and the birds and the money and back to the stationmaster and the Sauvignon and the birds...

You've pretty much passed the aggravation test.

Well, in that situation the single best thing I've found to do is plug the phrase Syberia walkthrough into your search engine of choice. I did it with Google and it pulled up eight or ten perfectly good resources.

DogMarine gimmie a day or two to find the link that made profile editing really, really easy. Would do it today, but I've got my plate full with a memorial service for my mother's ashes. But tonight I will get on it, but it really does sound like process-bog-down. I mean jeeeez 38 ?!?!? you using a PC owned by JPL or NASA ? :) Just saw your location, reminded me of my birth in Port Charlotte, Punta Gorda. Gulf Coast is shweet, miss boating through the channels and waking the gators, kinda wish I was still there, but moms had drag me with her to Philly when I was 5

Here's a list of processes to disable as suggested by a gaming group:

http://www.technobabble.com.au/technobabble/html/gaming/gaming2.htm

I strongly suggest reading the page in its entirety before commencment of your endevour, but above all-else DO NOT mess with your hardware profile named : Profile 1

That is your 'safe' profile, if it gets messed up, you wont boot

but this link is for your hardware profile

Hope it helps
