View Full Version : Lock Up/Crashes

Hi all,
I've reinstalled PK after upgrading to WinXP from ME. I've been trying to replay the SP game but everytime I reach "Military Base" the game locks up (as does Windoze) forcing a reboot. I've uninstalled and reinstalled twice (and gone through the registry to remove all keys related to the game) and restarted twice (i.e. not kept my saved games, but played from scratch).
I'm using an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ with 512 RAM running XP Pro, sound is an SB!Live 5.1 surround, grfx is a Radeon 9800 Pro (128 meg). PK is the original 3CD foldout box patched with 1.61, 1.62 and 1.64.
The lock-up happens at the same point every time; the load screen for "military base" appears and the progress slider reaches (I guess) about 95% then it locks.
Any ideas?

Sounds like (maybe) You are using old saves,If so delete em all and start over ,YaY,this was a bug in the original game fixed by one of the patches.

Thanks for the welcome!

Unfortunately I'm not playing from old saves - I've uninstalled and reinstalled PK twice - deleting all save games - and played from the beginning each time.

When you remove pk your old saves are saved you gotta go in the folder and delete them,uninstalling leaves them there ,where they cause trouble.

I've done that old chap, manually delete then empty the recycle bin.

Hmm,Maybe check your Dx9c and see if theres a problem there or,
You may have a Video option used in that area turned off,I'm not familiar with
Ati drivers but if you wait someone will help you out.

I ran dxdiag and no problems anywhere; I'm using DX 9.0c.

I've checked the surfaces of the disks and they look fine (if there were any probs then I guess PK would not have installed properly in the first place).

I'm beginning to tear my hair out now - I've tried the UK tech support phone (no phone support from mindscape, "use the website" and the website does not support firefox - it uses vbscript in its' form submission script).

When I had an Athlon 1700+ with a quarter gig of RAM and WinME PK ran fine. What is a boy to do?!?!?!?
