View Full Version : Abandoned Factory Movie

In celebration of yet another birthday (don't ask!), I thought I'd contribute another effort to the forum. This is strictly for fun. It's set in the Abandoned Factory and is my usual mix of camping, running away and making jumps as easy as possible. The soundtrack is especially for BloodBuster.
Crates feature strongly (understatement). I'm very aware that SYS also used crates to get to some secrets in his "Experience" vids. I hope that my variations are sufficiently different (ludicrous, is another word!) to make them worthwhile.
A low quality version is on Putfile

Great stuff!
Especialy the way to the 5 secret: saw it first time, now i see what was sys speaking last time when he watched my "backward jumping".
It's good you like to share the vids too.

Man - that was a great video. I loved the fireworks - they really fly don't they.. and the crates! It must have taken you ages to move them into position. I also liked your way of opening and closing doors :)
I once jumped around on that roof too, after I had done this (Like you say - this too is purely for fun):

When I read your post, and you mentioned the music - I immediately thought 'Philip Glass'. And WOW! Not only was it Mr Glass, but it was also my favourite Philip Glass Album - 1000 Airplanes on the Roof 'A Science Fiction Music Drama'. Thanks for thinking of me - you have brightened up my day!

LOL, finally, a way to make use of the weapon enhancer in AF. Too bad you ended the movie without using it. Most always say it was a gag done by PCF to put it up on top of the tower, but clearly you've shown there is a way to get to it before the last monsters are spawned.
I have just challenged/requested of you to make a sequel, superbly done. I liked the exploding Maso Commandos best.;)

Thanks for your kind words, Frag. Why does it not suprise me that you liked the exploding Masos best! http://dreamcatcherinteractive.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif
There's a very good reason I didn't use the power-up and it relates to the P.S. in my original post. If you count the number of crates I used to build my platform, that's all the small crates in the silos. So, if I drop back to the bottom of the main silo, how do I get out again? Oooops! http://dreamcatcherinteractive.com/forums/images/smilies/redface.gif
I could easily manage with one less crate and leave that in the first small silo and drag it with me as I go. However, that would take ages and the weapon enhancer would have worn off.
I wondered if it was possible to jump from the top of the main silo onto the edge of the broken area in the side. That would get me down and out quickly enough. I did try it but this is the kind of jump at which I'm rubbish! Has anyone ever done it and produced a video?
As for a sequel, I've definitely exhausted the AF. I'll have a think about other levels. If I can't do something original or fun, I'd rather let it lie. There are plenty of better players than me out there (including yourself) to produce "How to" vids.

No, don't bother with the crate, line up facing down at that broken wall area, and to the right of it. From there you can incrementally jump down onto the pieces of broken wall, onto the catwalk type thing joining the two towers, then onto the ledge you access the ladder from.
I've jumped down that way before, but it took carefull quicksaving and lots of practice to get it right. PK is great for quicksaves though, they literally give you several to choose from.
From there it's just a short drop. Sure it's a lot to do, and would take up at least half of the weapon enhancer, but it would be cool to see.
Maybe I'll try to get off a short clip like that. Cyody made one of the best last area clips of AF I've seen, climbing onto the ladder of the level end tower by squeezing behind the panel that blocks it and killer blade climbing it. He then proceeded to snipe from the ladder, it was great.

... I've jumped down that way before ...
So, it is possible. I shall have to have a go. Once on the outside of the silo, I'd be interested to know where you cause the first set of Soldiers to spawn in. If it happened while you were above them, it would be great fun, much like Cyody's video. I've tried that PK blade climb myself and it worked. Not quite as elegant as Cyody, though!
If you have to hit the ground to get things going, you could show off the power-up but there are so many good camping spots in that area, it's not really necessary. A good way to finish a video though.
If you do manage a quick recording, I'd very much like to see it.

Artas - Your wish is my command!
Seriously, I cracked the jump and made a quick movie of my efforts. Just knowing it's possible certainly helps (thanks, Frag).
There's two clips here. The first is a jump with the express objective of getting outside as quickly as possible. I take quite a bit of falling damage but with the Gold armour from the silos, it's ok. Since the whole point is to use the power-up, I actually go on the attack for a change. So you'll se why I usually defend! The second clip is much more my style.

...a voice from the darkness.....
Very cool videos GreyBeard - I've just watched again both of them... ;) I've never thought that there are so many possibilities with the crates: I rather go into direct-fights, but I also miss things by it, I think. I saw many-many new things from this video. I must try out next time at least some of these funny/interesting tricks: I don't mind spending even hours on one place in PK, since I love the atmosphere, so I don't mind building up the barricades let's say for the fireworks-fun, what was my favourite from the video. But I also liked very much how You opened the door at the beginning! Also, grabbing and using the WM is very nice in the videos... :)
However Artas, that still wasn't the way I meant: because it can be done even without using any crates. You don't need to build stairs by using up the crates, but You can gain some speed in the silo with the last CheckPoint, and then a sharp jump, and You have reached the ledge on the other silo... ;)
Finally, here is Cyody's Abandoned Factory Fun (http://tombraider.central-game.net/sys/painkiller/cyody/factory_fun.wmv), what Frag mentioned, and also a weird wallsurfing-video (http://tombraider.central-game.net/sys/painkiller/cyody/surfen3.wmv), still from Cyody...

.. it can be done even without using any crates ...
I always assumed it could, otherwise why would PCF put the power-up on the roof. However, I'm terrible at the sort of jump that needs you to take off from exactly the right point. I've never done the crane jump in the Dockyard to this day. I've tried and failed the silo jump many times in the past. Hence, some crates to give me a helping hand. I have more patience than skill. http://dreamcatcherinteractive.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif
Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the vids. As I was putting the first one together, I looked around to see if anyone had done similar things already. And sure enough you had used crates in the "Experience" movies. I'm glad you approve of my variations.

I cracked the jump and made a quick movie of my efforts. Just knowing it's possible certainly helps (thanks, Frag).Man!,..I didn't even get a chance to give it a go and you've already done it! (Been shopping for goodies to go with my new HDTV) Great job GB, I counted about 30 seconds the weapon enhancer was active, and you wasted only about 12 seconds of it with that quick jump down, taking about 111 armor drain vs 73 in the second clip, so not bad at all.;)
The only thing you could have done better was use the chaingun earlier on the Maso's to explode them from a distance. Now that I've watched this and Cyody's AF camp video again, I'm wondering what the weapon enhancer would do to the Electro/Driver combo blast.
I liked the music better in this one too. The "March of the Penguins":D stuff is cute, but this music adds more fraggin' flavor to it.;)

Finally, here is Cyody's Abandoned Factory Fun (http://tombraider.central-game.net/sys/painkiller/cyody/factory_fun.wmv), what Frag mentioned...Thanks for showing that again Sys, I realized in seeing it again I was wrong about him Killer blade climbing onto the ladder.
I see now the trick is to squeeze in behind the panel hiding the ladder far enough to use the ladder itself to climb up. What gave it away is that he is actually mouse looking down while he's doing it, that's only possible on ladders.

So - you go 'back' to rock'n'roll huh? Would you be prepared to divulge your age?
Also - thanks a lot for the heads-up about the Philip Glass material on Amazon. I have quite a lot of his stuff, including 1000 airplanes... Have you heard Music in 12 Parts? That is hard-core Glass!
I shall use some PG for my next PK movie I think. I have been using a lot of dance recently, so some cool quality minimalist sounds will make a nice change.

HDTV! All I got for my birthday was a new record deck so I can get all my old vinyl on to CD. Just jealous http://dreamcatcherinteractive.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif Birthday?, LOL, no, I dug into my mad money, funny how when you make a good purchase you're left anything BUT mad though.:)
Everthng is coming together beautifully so far. Although the delivery from the warehouse to the store (purchased at a direct buying business) was delayed over the weekend by snow, the timing for my first in home HD viewing couldn't have been better.
First off, the thing fit just barely into my little '79 Corolla liftback in the box. I set it up in time to see the last half of Monday Night Football in HD, and who is playing but our Seahawks handing the Eagles their hats in Philly to the tune of 42-0! It tied the biggest shutout in MNF history!
Other little unexpected surprises were the roof antenna of our apt building working great for all the local over the air HDTV broadcasts, despite sub par performance with it on my analog set, and the quality of HD broadcasts coming from ABC, AND NBC, which was totally awesome!
I had thought CBS was the only one doing 1080i broadcasts, but NBC does as well, and MNF's 720p was right in step quality wise. Another nice feature I found was this set (Samsung TX-R2678WH) has a guide built in showing minimal program info, but titantv.com is much better, more thorough, and customizable with optional email reminders. The registration is free, and the site is paid for with minimal advertising.
I can't wait until I get my HDMI cable, DVI to HDMI adapter, and RCA to 1/8th mini audio cable so I can play Painkiller and Far Cry in 1280x720 on it, and DVD movies as well as local HDTV with 5.1 sound.
After seeing some HD tuner cards priced at $100 and up, I wondered if I should have bought a set for $500 rather than $600, and gotten a tuner card, which enables you to record broadcasts. None of the $500 sets I saw were to my liking though, and I seriously doubt the $100 tuner cards could pull in HD signals as well as this TV does.
I actually was getting HD broadcasts just about as well with a set of old RCA brass rabbit ears, but there was some interference when walking close to the set, so I went with the roof antenna.
If any of you are thinking of making such a purchase, check antennweb.com and see what direction the HD signals are coming from. Chances are if you live in a wood structure building, or have a view in the direction of the transmitters from a window, you can aim an indoor antenna such as the Zenith Silver Sensor to pick them up, within reasonable distance of course.
