View Full Version : Game initiating reboot
Hi guys,
I know I've posted this question before but I need to ask again.
I can complete the original version (patched to 1.35) up until the load for "Military Base". As the progress slider hits the end everything stalls, there is a repeating 'buzz' sound and my PC reboots.
This first happened when I had the game patched to 1.64 (I've also tried 1.62 and 1.61). I've dropped Windows sound acceleration down in steps to emulation only but to no effect.
I've also tried all the different sound systems available under "audio" in the game options menu.
When I had an Athlon 1700+ system running Windows ME I had no problems, now I have an AMD64 3400+ with 1 gig matched RAM and an ATI 9800 Pro (128 meg) gfx card running unders Windows XP Pro. Sound is from a Creative Labs SB!Live 5.1 Surround (which works fine with FarCry, HL2, Quake4 etc).
I've tried with and without my broadband running. I've shut down all non-essential XP services. I've killed all running processes. I've run with and without my firewall running.
I'm currently using Radeon drivers Catalyst 5.11, I've also tried all previous versions back to 4.
Can anyone suggest anything I can try?
TIA

Try to load this level in PainEditor. Therefore we'd see what happen. If this is possible then you can use the play button. Maybe we'll find on this way the solution.
(Painkiller/Bin/Editor/PainEditor.exe)

Maybe lowering video settings might help? People experienced this in many levels, the game didn´t reboot tho, but the reason might be the same.
Bjossi - I've already tried lowering resolution and removing all the little graphic enhancements; no effect I'm afraid.
Varus77 - the level started to load in PainEd, reached the end of the progress bar and promptly locked the PC up and (and it rebooted automatically).
I've checked the surface of the CD's and can't find any obvious damage on them, maybe there is a problem with the CD's and that one level is affected?

Then the level file itself is the problem, maybe reInstalling will help.
(back-up your savegames)

Yes - maybe there is one of the pak-files corrupted. Let's compare...
You can go in the PainEditor and > Extract Game Data
That's what I got after that in this 2 folders:
http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/5557/militarybase9vr.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
In Painkiller/Data/Maps ... and /Levels
The mpk-file is the geometry ...
Hi Varus77,
Here are my file/directory sizes as reported by WinXP Pro:
mpk = 21,839,168
wps = 5,929,587
[C3L3_Military_Base] = 345,687
So it appears that my C3L3 directory is 4,670 smaller than yours. It looks as though I'm missing something :)
TDyl
In directory C3L3_Military_Base:
CAcousticEnv = 12,592
CAction = 1,106
CArea = 6,011
CBillboard = 63,554
CBox = 24,708
CEnvironment = 64,330
CItem = 53,978
CLight = 34,299
CSound = 11,277
CSpawnPoint = 42,617
Templates = 23,490

You´re missing some bytes of data, installation should fix that.
Btw, are you both using the same versions?

Hm, interesting...
http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/6669/militarybase018an.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
That's not a huge file at all, therefore here we go...
C3L3_Military_Base.zip (http://www.shuto.ch/users/adre/aGe/Varus/C3L3_Military_Base.zip)
maybe we'll get it...(I hope it'd be so easy)
Compare and try...if you have those folders once then PK load at least the data from there...(that's always the way like bug fixes work)
_EDIT_
This level isn't "patched" anytime...always the original...BTW...it'd be not so important because you could change the things inside - if you want - and it'd work - normally)
Thanks for the zip Varus. I'll try it later tonight and post results this evening.
Regards
TDyl
The three other files within the laevel diectory are as follows:
C3L3_Military_Base.CLevel 2,057 bytes
C3L3_Military_Base.Lua 5,604 bytes
vssver.scc 64 bytes
Varus
I've just extracted the files you provided (thanks). Do I need to repack the game data prior to running PK or can I use the game with the data still in extracted form?
TIA
TDyl
Varus,
I just tried running PK again with the C3L3 files from your zip. "Train Station" finished OK and I started loading "Military Base". After a moment or two I was dumped to desktop with the following dialog box:
Script Error
[string "../Data/Levels/C3L3_Military_Base/C3L3_Military_Base.CLevel"]:36:
attempt to index failed "BloomFX" (a nil value)
Press "Retry" to debug
Neither retry nor ignore did anything. PK was shown in Task Manager as 'not responding'.
I think I'm going to uninstall and reinstall AGAIN :)
I'll note the C3L3 file sizes in a vanilla install, and try the game. Then I'll re-apply the 1.35 patch, check the file sizes and try the game again. I'll back-up my current 1.35 savegames, which I don't think will work in the 1.0 vanilla, so it may be a while before I post an update.

I think I know what might be wrong, version mismatch. That CLevel file is attempting to enable Bloom effects, which patch 1.35 doesn´t have if I´m not mistaken.
Try newer update like 1.61.
Thnx Bjossi, I'll DL and try 1.61 before the uninstall/reinstall idea.

...Do I need to repack the game data prior to running PK...
No.
For the error - Bjossi is right - you can test this:
http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/2609/militarybase023pw.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
...delete this 4 entries, save and test it.
(Military was used before BooH for demonstrating the new effects...like Bloom)
Hi,
I removed the 4 "BloomFX" entried in the military base CLevel file and saved.
The level progress bar made it all the way to the end and the correct ambient sounds started with NO stuttering - YAY!!!
But after another 2 minutes on the load progress screen the PC rebooted - d.a.m.n :(
I will try another uninstall/reinstall from the original disks, see how far I can get on 1.0, then try 1.35, then 1.61, then 1.62 and finally 1.64.

That sounds hopeful in my ears. I'm sure it'll run...
Well, I have done a complete uninstall (including a regedit to remove all registry traces - just in case). I then dl'd the patches from new from gamershell as I saw somewhere that people think they are completely bug-free versions.
I have now re-installed PK and patches 1.35 & 1.61 (I couldn't see any point putting 1.62/1.63/1.64 on just for SP a.t.m.).
I'll let you know later if Military Base works OK (I'm up to the end of Cathedral now).

I hope you get Military Base running. :)
Btw, there is no 1.63 patch. :p
Bjossi
I could've sworn I saw one on the gamershell patch dl listings (here (http://www.gamershell.com/download_8729.shtml) ) but it now seems to have been supedceeded by the 1.64 patch.
Take care man and I'll keep you informed.

...and smiling too because 1.61 includes 1.35.. :D ...but anyway...it have to run!
Hi Varus
D.a.m.n I wis they'd say that before spending all the dl time. Oh well. I'll keep you posted.
TDyl
Sorry for my ignorance, but I would have believed what I'd heard about 1.35 being the most important patch for SP play and that 1.61 wasn't that important. I would hope that there was some page on the web somewhere that listed the patches you need as and when you need them instead of just releasing them to the community without so much as a read-me before dl'ing.
I guess it's just one of those things with companies that have so much money that all they care about is the next release not ensuring the previous is working properly.
Sorry about the rant.
TDyl
p.s. no matter the problems I've had with the game - it is still my favourite.

You´ll only need 1.61 if you play single player only.
Here´s the correct order.
1) Install Painkiller
2) Install the expansion (optional)
3) Apply the 1.61 patch
4) Apply the 1.62 patch (optional)
5) Apply the 1.64 patch (optional)

Yes - you're right. It's not easy to find the right way. There is a sticky thread in the main forum called Playing Painkiller [Read First] and inside the link below...
(Hmmm... they said it on her officially side:)
http://www.dreamcatchergames.com/dci/support/pc/patches/pk.php
NOTE: Version 1.61 includes all changes and enhancements from previous Painkiller updates. Also note, installing this patch will break any previous savegames that are not autosaves.
To your comfort...I'm "here" since april 2004...and dl'd 1.15, 1.20, 1.31, 1.35, 1.61....... :D
