One of the most mis-understood topics here seems to be patching/updating the game. So, here's my attempt to clear things up (and maybe get myself a sticky!).

To begin with, the safest place to get patches still seems to be from Gamer's H*ll - http://www.gamershell.com/patch_download_archive_P.html?orderby=name - scroll down, they are in the order of release date. Next, and this is what seems to mess people up, is how to patch. The patches must be applied in numerical order.

So, which patch do you need? That depends on which version of the game you have, and how you want to play. Painkiller alone is v.1.0, so if you only have the original game, and are single-playing only, you can stop at patch 1.3.5. Painkiller's expansion, Battle out of H*ll, is v.1.5, and includes all patches up to that point. PK with BooH installed has three updates, 1.61 and 1.62 (single-player only), and 1.64 (on-line multi-player only). Link to patch details - http://www.dreamcatchergames.com/dci/support/pc/patches/pk.php. If you have BooH installed, and want to play on-line, you have to patch to 1.64; It should also be noted that multi-players need to have the same patch as the server they're playing on (most should be up to .64, but there might be a few which aren't totally up-to-date. Server patches can also be found at Gamer's H*ll). Single-player only can stop at 1.62. PK Black/Gold should be at 1.60, and can be patched accordingly.

I hope this covers it, and I hope I didn't forget anything, and I really hope this helps someone.

It is strongly recommended on top of patches to install the most versatile and quite important (not official) program for painkiller - powermad, designed to make the game fully "operational".

Earlyer wondered and did not suppored installation of powermad due that the program enables cheating, i have tryed it myself after, i understood, that without it the game is like "unbalanced" - powermad adds the whole missed potencial PCF never could thought of.

It fixes game bugs, adds cheats (for custom needs), console commands and all the features of those every gamer wishes.

Especialy if you are a veteran painkiller gamer, and you want to explore painkiller deeper, in it's roots, you must have powermad!

Advance more!
Explore deeper!
Have the fun you never had!

I forgot to mention that, after patching to 1.6x, previously saved games will not work, except for beginning-of-level autosaves. If you were halfway thru the Asylum when you patched, you're gonna half to start it over.
