Specs:
winxp pro sp2
A64 3200+ 512 Meg
KV8 Pro with latest drivers
nVidia 6800 with latest drivers and DirectX 9.0c June edition
Audigy 1 with latest official drivers

Installed PK with all patches in correct order; PK starts but blank screen on intros and game startup UI visually but audio works just fine.

Reinstalled Painkiller with no patches; come up with this crap:
The application failed to initialize properly - 0xc0000142.

Applied patch 1.61 on above re-install; same as first install.

The patches I downloaded from 3D gamers.

Now I have played this game before early last year and earlier and I had problems with Zonealarm (at that time) running and not allowing the game to play (crashing the game) and also have had game playablility but no cutscenes visually just audio. I remember something at that time about the bik dll needing to be updated to get the videos to work.
But what is strange now is that the game startup UI is now black screen.

Audio works but no video.

Anybody got some tips/pointers/remember way back when?

BTW, ALL my other games work as intended.

Since I can't edit my post after about an hour.

I've tried getting any updated dll files from Bink and non-existent for video for us regular joes without the SDK and the one for Miles sound doesn't work with Painkiller 1.61. Some esoteric/weird error message.

I guess I'm SOL. Great game but I never got to finish it. Got about past the snowy bridge with all the ninjas and other various enemies. Oh well.

Any suggestions?

Are you by any chance using Norton AntiVirus?

Nope McAfee/Comcast complimentary version. I right-clicked and disabled both the viral and firewall stuff for the second re-install.
I can't figure out why I can't see the game ui though. What resolution does the game first start up in, 640x480 or less?

Again can't edit previous post so new reply

I finally got PK with no patches to start but Black screen again.
This is screwy.

Maybe you should try an older version than Driver Version: 6.14.0010.8195 (English)
(You're just the second one with the same card and driver and problems but I'm not sure if this could be the solution)
If I'm right then your MoBo hasn't the nVidia-hardware-firewall, has it? If so then you've to deinstall all this drivers. The game won't run with it.

I found the problem since I have a Via chipset.
See here:
via forum (http://forums.viaarena.com/messageview.aspx?catid=54&threadid=69177&enterthread=y)
and Via pulled the 5.06 drivers from the site.

And I just WASTED my time reinstalling WinXP twice!!! Though first time was a screwup on my part. <sheep-ish smirk on face>

BTW this did affect Halflife 2 also, my bad although I was replaying SiN and it worked and decided to replay PK, but the above didn't affect OpenGL games which SiN is. Strange.

Sorry for the trouble but at least we now know what it is.

You haven't to reinstall OS only like this one from that forum:
after 3 tries I got the VIA AGP driver to uninstall , if you get an error when you try to uninstall it keep trying!!

all is working now!

many don't like VIA...always the same.

BTW: (from this forum too)

The VIA HyperionPro 5.06A driver package has been withdrawn from VIA Arena and replaced with the 5.04A version. An incorrect service value key was set in the Setup program relating to the new VIA AGP driver version 4.50C. If you have installed the HyperionPro 5.06A driver package and the VIA AGP driver 4.50C driver installed, you may experience some serious issues with 3D games, the symptom being that you will only see a black screen when you load the game. To resolve the problem, go to ...

Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > System Devices > VIA CPU to AGP2.0/3.0 Controller > click on the Driver Tab > Click Roll Back Driver

VIA apologizes for the inconvenience casued by this error.
