targeting confusion

Confused about correct targeting procedure. At various times the game responds on it own, tageting so and so, sir. Other times it asks, which target, sir? Different but related question: what is the correct procedure for targeting? Also, tho I have yet to do a campaign, I do plenty of solo patrols. Am I able to advance in rank doing these solos? Or is it just in campaigns you are able to advance? Lastly, (this is off-topic, I know, please bear with a newbie) how am I able to control a battleship?

but here is a few short answers.

1: your engaging target is a little un-understandable when we do not know if you are using a microphone to issue enage commands with, however if you are:
You have to use your binoc(ulars) and look at the target you wish your crew should engage, there is a few options to the engage voice command:
A: look at a target and say "engage" and all guns will engage (if they can hit the target ofcuz)
B: look at a target and say "engage deckguns" and all deckguns will engage (if they can hit the target ofcuz)
C: look at a target and say "engage AA guns" and all AA-guns will engage (if they can hit the target ofcuz)
Using the voice command "battlestations" and your guns will engage the nearest enemy, however in this case deckguns wont engage planes and AA-guns wont engage ships.

If you are not using a microphone you have to click on an enemy on the mini tactical screen and then on a selected gun type (icon) and then press fire (hold down the ctrl key while selecting guns to select multiple).

Or you can open the big tactical screen and turn on auto engage for deck/AA-guns, those icons sits next to the one that looks like a speaker (that one is the battlestations button (incase you dont use a microphone).


2: In solo patrols you do not earn any rank or medals, those can only be earned in campaign mode


3: To play a battleship you have to complete either:
RNE sub or surface campaign (this unlocks Hood to be playable in tactical patrols)
KLM sub or surface campaign (this unlocks Kaiser Wilhelm & Prince Edward to be playable in tactical patrols)
