I installed the single player demo #1 (there are three of them, i think) from filefront:

http://files.filefront.com/Painkiller+Single+Player+Demo/;2127418;;/fileinfo.html

However, when i try to uninstall it from D:\Program Files\DreamCatcher\Painkiller SP Demo, there is no uninstall.exe program. The only thing there are the demo folders and a uninstal.log file. I went into the Control Panel > Add/Remove programs, and it does not have anything related to painkiller at all. I even tried utilites like "your uninstaller" and "myuninstaller" and both can't find a way to remove the demo. Did also try Windows restore function, which didn't work either, and as a last resort, reinstalled the demo in hopes of finding a fresh unwise.exe/uninstall.exe in the Demo folder. But that failed too.

I did install the demo as User, and not Administrator. Not sure if that matters.

Thx, using Winxp pro, SP2.

I'm pretty sure that you have to have admin rights to uninstall the demo.

..or mark the PK-folder and delete.
Long time ago it was normally to do it on this way (today some demos and other programs). But - right - you have to look always before if there is no uninstaller and not entry in Control Panel > Add/Remove. If there isn't anything THEN you can delete them on this simple way (otherwise you'd have to remove those entries by your own action and in the registry too)

I'm pretty sure that you have to have admin rights to uninstall the demo.
Even after logging in as admin, there is no uninstall.exe or anything to remove in Add/Remove panel.

I know i could just delete the folder, but not sure what to delete in the registry. I kinda don't wanna mess with the registry, since bad things can happen.

Has anyone else tried the demo? Were you able to uninstall it?

thx.

After you delete the folders open regedit and search dreamcatcher and delete folder and subfolders,
then keep searching dreamcatcher and delete all folders and keys that you find.export a copy of your reg first if your worried.
but I'm sure it won't cause problems.

alright, i'll give it a shot. I am not sure why the installer didn't put in a uninstall script....is this normal? And on top of that, i have a file called uninstal.log...why is that there? I can't uninstall it, but i have a log file for the uninstall

You can delete everything in the registry that youīre certain belongs to a game. For example, if you see a folder named Croteam in the registry, itīs ok to delete it because it belongs to Serious Sam.

One exception tho, do NOT delete the Sam folder in HK_Local_Machine, I think itīs a system item. Itīs empty but who knows what happens if one deletes it? ;)

There is a very powerful tool called Tuneup Utilities
http://www.tune-up.com/

Besides of many other useful things it removes all those registry entries...

Using registry cleaners can be risky, Iīd like to mention that before computer casualties start to pop up. ;)
:p

Yes - in principle right - I use this programm since many years and there wasn't any mistake. Besides of this it makes of course a backup before and you can undo all or parts of it and so on.

You'll be surprised how many invalid entries and references this program will find! This can be easy some thousands...

Have a look at the references and awards...

Well, the last time I used a program like this, it made a blue screen and I got bunch of errors on startup, thank god the program made a backup.

So I donīt really trust these registry cleaners very much.

Yes...me too...I'm very mistrustful by those programs. There are many bad things around. (I'm the one who did a total backup for PK before patching and first on making hills I did patching with 1.61 because of the editor...lol)

But this TuneUp is really good and it's like a springtime wind blowing up your boot sequence to heaven... :D ...very earth-boundly spoken :p

I dont trust those reg cleaners either.
as for your other question there should be a uninstall
option don't know why it's missing.
if you do it the way I said you should be ok.
anyway let us know how it works out.
if you have trouble import your old reg and pm me and I'll make you a list of what to remove.

The list of items to remove are in install.log, just a bit messy setup of the file names/locations.

Well, i took a risk and reinstalled the game in the same directory as admin. Then i tried to remove it, and behold, there was a uninstall option available. Why would the installer skip the uninstaller if i had installed it as a user is beyond me....Anyhow, it removed it. However, i still have some entries leftover from the install when i search for "painkiller" in regedit. Is it alright to leave those there?

Thx for all the help by the way.

That isn't a problem at all. There are always hundreds of invalid entries in each registry.
