View Full Version : Apart From Dungeon Lords Any Game?
Apart from DUNGEON LORDS is there any other similar "RPG 3rd Person" games?
I know Ghotic II But to me DL is better.
Morrowin is good too but offer less combat "I find it a bit slow"

If you actually think Dungeon Lords is *IN ANY WAY* better than Gothic II ... I'm afraid there is no hope for you ...
Well, perhaps you'll think MetalHeart: Replicant Rampage is better than Fallout ...

Ultima: Asscension was 3rd person, and just as half-@ssed when it was released. Origin treated it's customers in pretty much the same way DC has done, if I remember right. I remember in Austin "fans" would drive by Richard Garriot's house and through thier game boxes (usually filled with dog poop) at his house.
to reply "txa1265" I have try Gothic 2 demo only and I was not impress
but if you're telling me I should try again I will.

wow i think we should really start a tour to d.ws house with our dl boxes and some poo, ultima 9 was not half as bad as dl is now, it was very buggy and did barely run on my pc but the content was all there, and the story was way better than anything bradley could ever dream off .compared to dungeon lords its a masterpiece even today.

The story was great, and the game was actually ahead of it's time. We were anticipating the release of new hardware before production and a gold candidate was even available, but EA bought us out and compressed our dev time by 2/3 then kicked the game out the door. It pretty much killed the Ultima Series in one, fatal blow, hehehehe. I was a 3D Modeller at Origin at the time. That was probably the worst work experiance I've ever had.

theres this new mmorpg out called minions of mirth.
its just like the old eq ( when it first came out).
heres the details..
its multiplayer on servers like eq,or single player (the whole world) on your pc,heck you can even host your own world.
you can have a party of char you make in your group and play in the world that way.
you can multi class all the way up to lvl 100( i have a lvl 10 ranger and lvl 7 tempist , elementalist type guy ),or go straight one class all the way up ,you can pick a total of 3 classes for multi class.
you can unlock monters by finnishing quests in the game and when unlocked you can play them in a monster campaign.
you can play in 3 campaigns, the light....the dark...and monster campaign.
there all in the same world you just start in different parts is all i think(like dark elves and ogres in eq).
you buy the game for 25 bucks ( before jan 1'st i think ) and play it however and whenever you want....no fees to worry about ...ever..
this game is addictive...and awesome and i love it all the more because im done paying for it..
if you guys like rpg's like you all claim to do..then you should stop looking at forums and start playing good games for a change .
not that dl isnt good...i personaly love it and am waiting for the patch and the collectors set..but in the mean time ill be playing this game.

Arcanum of Steamworks and magik obscura is the name it was troikas first game and by far their best. I really love this game for its cool steampunk setting and the excellent nonlinear gameplay with a great storyline,It comes right after ultima vii,fallout1 & 2,planescape and bevore bg2 in my list of best crpgs of all time.

First off, let my just say that MMORPG's SUXXOR! - they are mediocre substitues for anything resembling a good (single-player)RPG.
However, if ones aggregate neuroses demand a protracted excercise in futility and aggravation(staples of the genre), cloaked beneath a patent veneer of commercially biased 'gameplay' mechanics - then so be it.

If I remember correctly, this was before the proliferation of residential broadband, and when it turned out that the installer contained flaws(not to mention the presence of other quality issues/bugs), Origin promptly sent out replacement discs for all who solicited them - free of charge(even to Canada).
A marginal improvement over what passes for 'service' in DC/HP's book, I suspect.
Besides, much of the furor derived from performance optimizations for the proprietary(now extinct) 3DFX api - superficial greivances for a game/series whose legacy was marred by the far more trenchant failings(truncated plot/gameplay/dialogue which failed to evoke the design tenents of traditional ultima formulae, more linear than it's predecessors, crap-tastic place-holder sky, etc.) of an ignominious finale.
In any event, I'm sure we would all appreciate any anecdotes you might be at liberty to share.

The Dec '99 issue of Computer Gaming World is where I procured mine(which I bought for this explicit purpose, having already subscribed to a format sans the monthly preview media), so good luck finding it now(a waste of time most likely, as i doubt anyone would devote the requisite bandwith for such a relic - sources quote in excess of 300 megs, but I seem to remember closer to 450).

mutch younger are you serious? Arcanum was a very mature rpg,i wouldnt recommend it to younger people apart from its complex gameplay it had a very mature and strong storyline and violence, sexual things like the brothel where you could get it on with 3 hookers, a halforc domina and even a sheep ;)
apart from fallout i dont think there is a rpg with more mature elements.

You got it right, but the time line was wrong. First Origin (at EA's urging) denied that the issues were with the software shipped, and were more of a VooDoo / 3DFX driver issue. Shortly after they closed their forums after releasing an almost 100meg "patch" that no one could download unless they had a T1 connection at work (T1 was "the shiznit" back in the day, hehehe! An OC3 connection meant you had died and gone to Nerd Heaven). You went to the forum and you got a place card page that said the game was "fixed", these are not the droids you are looking for, etc ...
The press got a whiff of scandle and I even remember the Austin American Statesmen running an article on Richard G. in the entertainment section, and how his game sucked.
The sad part is, it could have been a really good game. I remember several of us volunteering for lock ins to try and get as much stuff into the game as possible, eating cold pizza and sleeping on army cots.
The replacement disks didn't get shipped until a gamer started trying to get a Class Action suit together and a lawyer took him seriously and started getting it together. They also included a deal to get the patch CD included with CGW (I think).
About a week after about 80% of us got the boot, and I went over to Iguana to work on Nintendo games (Turok). Man, those were the days, heheheh!
If you want a GOOD story, ask me about Richard G.'s parties he threw at his castle. That's right, I said "Castle", heheheh!

One game I never see mentioned, but It was one of the best I've ever played was Darksun : Shattered Lands. Its old (1994) I think, but nevertheless fun, fun fun. One of those games you can't stop playing no matter what until to reach that next goal.
I tried to to find a link to some abandonware site for it, no luck =/ Best I could find was a link to a re-publisher.
Darksun : Shattered Lands CD-Rom (http://www.cdaccess.com/html/pc/ad&dds1.htm)
I think I'm actually gonna plunk down the 10$ myself. Heh
Here are a couple abandonware links if anyone is interested. Lots of other old..fantastic games for free.
Abandonia (http://www.abandonia.com/index2.php)
Home of the Underdogs (http://www.the-underdogs.org/)
I saw some goodies on these. Betrayal at Krondor, King's Quest Series, Eye of the Beholder Series..groovy stuff
And on a side note..When is Bethseda going to create an Elder Scrolls MMORPG. I would sell my girlfriend's body to help finance that endeavor. I would sacrafice my pets, install Windows, whatever it would take. =D

LOL I agree with the Elder Scrolls MMORPG thing, as for everything else..... I don't think I would go that far. Anyways while we are talking about games we are playing. "Planeshift" It's a free MMORPG, it's not done, but what they have so far works. Here is the link.

Also if you want to look into more free MMORPG's or other free online games here is another link.

Don't care for online games? But want to play a RPG? I liked "Demise" It's an old game, and I haven't re-paid them for the new virsion. (Since I bought mine so long ago, before Pharaoh took over.) But I'm still enjoying it.

Planeshift is the only one I have tried. They aren't top of the line games, but what is it you look for in a game? The story line, or the game play?

It certainly was not a bad game, just one with unrealized potential in failing to meet some lofty expectations.
But it's disheartening to hear that it was coercion, not conscience(or common sense) that expedited the mass distribution of replacement media.

Not the one with all the false walls and secret rooms!?
Me and my brother used to joke that after Origin was devoured by EA, the 'real' Garriot was walled up in one of his clandestine alcoves, with his erstwhile role expropriated for the nefarious ends of a diabolical EA corporate doppleganger(or Garriot-bot) run amok(it's somehow comforting to think that).
And I sometimes wonder that such whimsical runmination was not more jest than prescient.
You didn't perchance happen upon a manacled, long-shanked skeleton during one of your errant escapades through the castle?

Troika Games' Tim Cain stopped by the RPGCodex forums to report that the company has filed its final tax return and is now officially shut down. His full post:
Today, the final nail was pounded into the coffin that holds Troika Games, LLC. Today could be considered the date of its closing, or you can pick from one of several dates:
February 28, 2005 - Troika Games closes its doors
September 30, 2005 - Troika Games files with the state for dissolution
December 24, 2005 - Troika Games files its final tax return (the last step in dissolution)
Pick your favorite date, kids. Thanks for your support, and good night.

Another game in the 3rd person game that I just got and am having a blast with is Joan of Arc. I bought it with a bunch of games at Big Lots for 2.99 and haven't played it til now. I was hesitant thinking that here is another RTS clone but I have been pleasantly surprised. I am already level 8 and still haven't done a RTS scenario yet. The combat is fast and furious with combo moves, leveling up includes adding points to various stats and hey, there are a couple stores to buy stuff in this first town. You can even ride a horse and change between Joan to other characters if you like. There is a big burly guy named LeHire who has an awesome move with a big club! Good music and the first time I was able to charge into battle on the horse with the music blaring made it feel really epic. I think it is a short game with only 10 or 11 acts but I am really getting my money's worth so far, I was very surprised. Graphics are kind of like Fable. Lots of controls I am learning and I like how you can put points in all the different combo moves.

I also have Icewind Dale and the Baldur's Gate games ... antone know of any others that we can play together? It's one of the reasons I was interested in Dungeon Lords.

I currently spend oodles of time playing the elder scrolls game, Morrowind (3rd in the series), and it's fantastic, apart from it's apparently lacking small party multiplayer... I've never forgiven the devs for it... anyway, their new game, "Elder Scrolls IV: OblIVion" is coming out in march, I think, for PC, and even sooner for XBOX, and it has great promise. I'm sure it's been mentioned here already, I confess I didn't read through every post before posting myself (bad forum ettiquette, I know), but I wanted to mention it myself, because that way, I feel special =D. Unfortunatly, Oblivion too, lacks multiplayer, however, it's still going to be a fantastic game, with in depth character development, and real sense of roleplay... I'm going to get kicked for my herein in depth advertisement for the opposition in the gaming industry, aren't I?

The only thng that worries me about Oblivion on the PC is that the system requirements are looking to be very steep... I hear it even chugs a bit on the XBOX360. I have a decent rig (Intel Prescott 3.2 and a Geforce 6800 AGP) but I have this Baaaaad feeeling that will "just" barely be enough.
Vampire: The Masquerade was really awesome in a creepy sort of way. As to the Ultima games, I was frustrated with U9, but I still played it through at least twice. I still listen to the soundtrack reminiscing the U5&7 days. I love Stones... ;) I have played the Ultima games since Ultima IV first hit the Commodore 64 several decades ago. I am downloading U5: Lazarus Project right now. It uses the Dungeon Siege Engine, maybe it is a good LAN game to try. *shrugs* I do virtually no online playing. I am a solo type of player.
I have a decent rig (Intel Prescott 3.2 and a Geforce 6800 AGP) but I have this Baaaaad feeeling that will "just" barely be enough.
@Visigoth: Don't say such evil things. You have the same equipment I do.
PS: I did just move my RAM up to 3 Gigs though. Maybe this will compensate somewhat.

just putting the game on the map for the rpgers out there who may need a fix :).
about the update ,im not sure there will be that much as far as graffics wise as its not sopposed to be all that dazzeling to the eye me thinks, and as is its quite playable and enjoyable online or off.
Its just little things like the fact that your character doesnt run he slides. also the combat system could use quite the bit of work.

I am looking for game that my fiance and I can play over LAN. We have the usual suspects: Dungeon Siege 1 and 2, Neverwinter Nights, Diablo 1 and 2, Sacred and Sacred Underworld (which is really buggy ... somtimes a quest breaks and our game is stuck since we can't pass it).
I also have Icewind Dale and the Baldur's Gate games ... antone know of any others that we can play together? It's one of the reasons I was interested in Dungeon Lords.
All of the sacred bugs were fixed in the gold edition.

The optimist in me hopes DC & HP will 'pull an Ascaron' with the CE and build some gamer good will like Ascaron did with 'Sacred Plus'.

Poot: Let us know if this conversion is any good... I've been curious about it for a while...
I have not installed it yet, but... If it says "Ultima', it's got to be good! :D

That's just as well, seeing it is SP only.

Fiance and I gave up waiting for the patch, not like it would actually make this game GOOd or anything, heheheh!
We've been playing a korean game called "Thang" and we both bought Guild Wars. Both games are a total blast.
Well as to MOm..im on dialup so 250 megs is a bit much...BUT i have been assusered than in about a week a CD for purchase will be implemented.

theres this new mmorpg out called minions of mirth.
its just like the old eq ( when it first came out).
heres the details..
its multiplayer on servers like eq,or single player (the whole world) on your pc,heck you can even host your own world.
you can have a party of char you make in your group and play in the world that way.
you can multi class all the way up to lvl 100( i have a lvl 10 ranger and lvl 7 tempist , elementalist type guy ),or go straight one class all the way up ,you can pick a total of 3 classes for multi class.
you can unlock monters by finnishing quests in the game and when unlocked you can play them in a monster campaign.
you can play in 3 campaigns, the light....the dark...and monster campaign.
there all in the same world you just start in different parts is all i think(like dark elves and ogres in eq).
you buy the game for 25 bucks ( before jan 1'st i think ) and play it however and whenever you want....no fees to worry about ...ever..
this game is addictive...and awesome and i love it all the more because im done paying for it..
if you guys like rpg's like you all claim to do..then you should stop looking at forums and start playing good games for a change .
not that dl isnt good...i personaly love it and am waiting for the patch and the collectors set..but in the mean time ill be playing this game.
www.prairiegames.com heres the site..
This better be good =)

I heard that the new Gauntlet sucked - too bad - I was looking forward to it. What was so bad about it?
Other than you can finish it in about two hours, and upgrading your character is meaningless? Nothing, I guess ... hehehe! Also, it's totally linier.

That's funny, since I own it and the Underworld add on, and we got a quest-stopping bug early in the game....

Ultima Underground 2 rules. But Ultima 2? Dude, you are hardcore oldschool.

Just a heads up, fiance and I picked up Guild Wars for $35 (we bought two, so it was about $74 plus change). It's a pretty fun game with no monthly fees to play.
Just thought I would let you guys know =P

The story was great, and the game was actually ahead of it's time. We were anticipating the release of new hardware before production and a gold candidate was even available, but EA bought us out and compressed our dev time by 2/3 then kicked the game out the door. It pretty much killed the Ultima Series in one, fatal blow, hehehehe. I was a 3D Modeller at Origin at the time. That was probably the worst work experiance I've ever had.
EA bought lots of little company's out ,and see how it ends, that makes me really sad .Lots of plans in the trashbin, people fired and only to reach the big audience.

Yep. I know it sounds dumb, but that's why I have never bought an EA game since. I am thinking I will add all D.W. Bradly and Dreamcatcher games to the list off "Avoid at all costs" as well. A lot of people thought that the horrific release that was Ultima 9 killed Origin, but it was EA that esentially murdered the series, and any other great ideas that may have come from the Studio. Anyone remember the Wing Commander series? I do and I sure miss them =/ Even Privateer, heheheh!

Yeh, but MS did the same thing except on a much grander scale ;)
