View Full Version : Too fast (tech problem)

After reading about Painkiller and watching vids of it on gamespot.com and such, I decided to buy this amazing looking game. I'm not sure how I ever missed this game to begin with. But anyway before buying, I downloaded the singleplayer demo just to confirm it's awesomeness.

This game is WAY too fast. Bear with me here, we're not talking FPS fast, we're talking like...something is technically wrong fast. The spear gun fires like a chaingun, pressing forward literally like, throws me against a wall all the way across a room, the enemies are moving unusually fast. I've played most FPS's since Doom 2, Quake 1, etc. I have and love games like Serious Sam and all the recent fast-paced action games like UT2k4, Tribes, blah blah. But this game moves at an unnaturally fast pace that it's literally impossible to play because the slightest touch of a key hurls me forward too far too fast.

If I hadn't seen videos online of gameplay, I'd probably just say "f this game" and think it is supposed to be this fast. But seeing the "normal" speed of the game in videos really makes me want to get this game working. Also should note that the music/ambient sounds sound normal, not sped up.

I had a similar problem happen to me ages ago when I tried to install Duke Nukem 3D on a brand new computer for old times sake. Having played and beat the game before at a "regular" speed, it was laughable. In that case, I think the computer was just too **** fast for such an old game, lol, but Painkiller isn't that old, so I'm really mystified by this.

I'm on a brand new VAIO laptop. Model: VGN-S560P/B to be exact. All the latest drivers.

Anyone?

You have to set affinity to cpu 1 then it'll run fine.
ctrl+alt+del, procceses, rightclick painkiller.exe and set affinity to 1 cpu
have fun.

PM Varus - or disable one CPU by taskmanager.

:( Thanks for the quick response guys. Unfortunately my laptop is *not* dual processor, it's just a 1.84ghz regular *** Intel processor. I tore the internet apart, as well as my system, in order to confirm this. I'll trying PM'ing "Varus," hopefully he can help. Thanks, any other ideas would also be appreciated :)

Not that you can do much about it, but what video processor is in it?

I seem to recall this type of problem being mentioned when the 64 bit CPUs first got real popular. Something about an adjustment to play it in 32 bit mode or such.

Just another one of the many annoying things about PC gaming besides the constant struggle price wise, choice wise, and knowledge wise to keep up with how to play the more advanced games with them.

I'm seriously considering an Xbox 360 if SmartJoy comes out with a Frag (KB/M adapter) for it.

Strange because thats exactlly what happens to a dual core.
does your laptop have hyperthreading?
did you look at the exe and see 1 cpu?

2 sites that detail the laptop that I have:
http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start?CategoryName=cpu_VAIONotebookComputers_SSeri es&ProductSKU=VGNS560P%2fB&TabName=specs&var2=
and
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000AXVNJY/002-3093328-3596835?v=glance&n=541966

Unfortunately no hyperthreading either. This laptop is straight out of the box from Christmas. Awesome so far, but what I'm getting at is that there's nothing on it yet, I haven't altered it or screwed it up yet in any way, except for the latest drivers.

EDIT: looking in task manager, there is no CPU 1 or anything related to CPU affinity and such. There is Priority, which I tried to set to high and low just to experiment; no change though.

Is there any type of 'turbo' setting (for the CPU) in the BIOS? If so, is it on? Also, you might doublecheck your motherboard graphics drivers and BIOS settings - just 'cause a machine is '...new out of the box...' doesn't mean that it's TOTALLY up-to-date.

It's all good I guess. This isn't my main computer, I have a badass desktop back at my dorm. I just thought it'd be something fun to play over the break while I'm at home. I'll try again in January when I get back. Thanks for your help.

Two or three times a year, we here have to explain to someone that most laptops aren't really designed for gaming, in spite of what the manufacturer might claim (especially if the game is a system hog). Glad you've got a good system at school, 'cause you're in for a treat!

Yes and No - :) - because there are much more important things than money which NOT only makes the world go round.

In the row of that...I wish you, and all others here, all goodies for the new year...always the things that you'll make smiling :)

It's probably a problem with scaling where your cpu speed is adjusted according to load (a power saving option) painkiller doesn't like this if you can
disable it maybe...if you start the game at low load say 60% cpu then start painkiller the cpu jumps to 100% maybe from 1.2 ghz to 2.0 ghz (depending on your cpu) My dual core has a option like this and it MUST be turned off with pk,or it goe's fast or slow(depending on cpu temp) ask petja, he seen me go from The matrix to sonic in one game.
I'm no expert (as you can tell) but I'm sure a fluctuating fsb and vcore setting affects the game, because it's actually changing the cpu on the fly...
? My cpu will go from 1.4 ghz to 2.5 ghz during the game if I leave it on.
And I'm pretty sure ALL laptops do this..
