Again my question is quite simple :

Can any one here could do an unofficial French Patch?

So far DC have not mention any work for French patch vesion even for the collector edition....

Any news???

Hi Mala, if you don't find anybody to do it - you may be able to make it yourself. Read BungBo's thread 'Something to do'. That should give you a good idea what is required. If you get error messages you may find folks here that can explain what went wrong ... i guess ;)

I assume translating everything is a real pain but BungBo can tell you how long he needed to do the german2english translation. Before you start translating you should make sure the game starts up without error after you renamed the files.

I agree with Oink. Getting the German patch to work with the French 1.3 should be very similiar to what we did. I'd be glad to help answer any questions. It would be difficult for me to actually do the translation because I'd have to compare the German to the French. I don't speak either German or French. I'd estimate that the translation took me about 60 to 70 hours to do, though I wasn't really keeping track. Also I would have to figure out how to install the French 1.3 patch onto my English version. Though it is an interesting challenge. :)

I've uninstalled and reinstalled DL. I installed the French 1.3 patch over my English 1.2 install. I made the usual changes and edited Draxis' batch file to rename all the EC wav files to FC. The game runs fine and the NPCs speak, but menus, items and text dialogue are still in English because I didn't start with the original French version.

In order to test out the German 1.4 to French mod, I would need the file...

FD6STRING

...in order to see how hard it would be to change the German to French, because that's the file that needs to be translated. Others just need to be renamed to get a bunch of the game changed to French.

So if MALA or any of the French players want to help out, private message me and I will private message you back my email address so you can send me the file.

I'm also curious to know if the French or German versions have the NPCs speaking in English or are they speaking French or German? I somehow can't imagine DC spending the money for the actors to make 3 versions of the speech files.

I've patched the French 1.3 version to German 1.4. It's pretty much the same way we did the English 1.3 to German 1.4. Just need the FD6STRING in order to start checking out the translating. But it is New Years Eve, and since there's like 8 or 9 hours difference between France and California, I don't expect to get any replies until tomorrow.

Happy New Year!

I think the translation should be done by somebody who is native in the target language (here french) and has the source language (here the german 1.4 patch) as secondary language. Otherwise the translation will be a real pain ... and i don't think BungBo want's to learn french afer he already had a 60 hour introduction to german ;)

Frohes neues Jahr!

I agree Oink. The thought of me attempting this is scary at best. Especially when I would have to shorten French words in order to make them fit the space. I'd hate to accidently shorten a word and have it end up being some sort of insult or something really weird. I had a hard enough time with making some English words and phrases fit. But I will post how to get the French 1.3 patched with the German 1.4. Just that amount will have quite a bit of the game in French anyway.

Here's how to do it.

1. Make sure you are patched to the French 1.3 version.

2. Back up your save game folder. Just because it's always a good thing to do.

3. Download and install the German 1.4 patch. Make sure you install it to the folder where your game is installed. The German 1.4 patch wants to install to C:\Dungeon Lords. I think the French version is installed in C:\Dreamcatcher\Dungeon Lords. So just be careful when installing the German patch.

4. Rename the file FNPCDATA.PAK to GNPCDATA.PAK.

5. Rename the file FTEXTPAK.000 to GTEXTPAK.000.

6. Start the game. You should see 1.4 in the bottom left hand corner of the main menu screen and German words. Now quit the game and let's do a little more.

7. Rename the file GINAME to INAME (or if you don't have iname look for finame) and rename it FINAME. Then rename the file INAME or FINAME to GINAME. That will make your Item Names in your inventory French.

8. In order to get the NPCs speaking again, you'll need to rename all the wav files in the Speech folder from FC to GC. Draxis has a batch file that I will edit to make this job much, much easier and very fast. I'll just need a way to post it so the French players can download it.

9. Now here's the real fun part. I suggest recruiting someone from the French Forum to take on this task. Much of the game is in French at this point, but in order to get the menus, added items, spells, effects and other things into French, you'll need to edit the GD6STRING file, using a hex editor, to change the German to French. Most of this can be done by opening the GD6STRING file in a hex editor then opening the FD6STRING file in a hex editor. Put the two windows side by side then do a Search in the French file for the word JANVIER and do a Search in the German file for the word JANUAR. You are now at the first word in both files. Now just carefully replace the German with the French. Do not backspace because this will delete a space and throw everything off. You must NOT add or delete any spaces or everything will be thrown off center. So when you come across a German word that is shorter than the French word you will have to come up with a creative way of saying what needs to be said so that the French players can understand. When changing menu entries try and center your entry. In other words, if you are left with 6 empty spaces after typing in the French word or words, then go back and have 3 empty spaces at the beginning of the entry and 3 empty spaces at the end of the entry. There are places where you will not want to center words because of variables such as 'Word Word Word: %s %d'. You want to keep only one empty space between the colon and the variable which means you could end up with 5, 9 or even 18 empty spaces at the beginning of the entry, but those do not matter. There are other things to be careful about but I won't bother with those right now. Also save, save, save while editing and test, test, test after you've entered a few changes to make sure everything is looking good and works. Also, there will be places where you will have to Translate the German because the comparing method will not work because of the added content in the 1.4 version. I had to use a translator on the web to get me through much of this, but if the French Forum can recruit someone who speaks both French and German, the work would go a lot faster. Of course, someone will need to translate this into French so the non-English speakers among the French players can read this and try to patch their games. Or perhaps an installer could be put together to make it easier.

Post any questions, observations, input etc. here and I and probably others will do our best to get you the answers.

Good luck and have fun! :)

Ok, I've edited Draxis' wav renaming batch file so it will change all the FCs to GCs in the Speech folder. Hopefully the Speech folder is labeled Speech folder in the French version. It was in the German version so this should work. If I remember correctly, the game needs to be installed in the C:\Dreamcatcher\Dungeon Lords folder for this batch file to work. Anyway, I need someone to volunteer to host this file and post a link for people to download. Private Message me your email address and I'll send you the file to post. Thanks. :)

You could do either. The instructions I already posted give instructions on how to translate from German to French. If you have someone who is better with English than German and want to do it that way, let me know and I will give you instructions on how to do it.

I have done the final french translation and I will try to play again most of the game to see if all goes right.

But it feels good to see 1.4 in the game.
