have you tried updating the game to 1.64 and seeing if it still crashes?

Probably not - Safe Mode loads just the basic Windows drivers, so you will not have anywhere near the same functionality. Safe Mode is primarily meant for troubleshooting Windows itself.

That is true, I think when in safe mode, Windows loads basic VGA driver for graphics, so Painkiller is not the only game that wonīt run in safe mode.
Freezing and crashing can be caused by many things, but we canīt help you if you donīt give us any info like the hardware your computer has installed.

Thanks for answering my questions... glad to know exactly what safe mode truly is... I probably wouldnt even know about it.. but " another " game my son has.. recommended downloading a patch in safe mode.
I did download all the patches but it still crashes.

As far as my computer.... its a Dinosaur... heh heh.
Dell Dimension XPS T450
Pentium III 440 Mhz ( ugh... )
512 MB RAM ( sigh.. at least i have that...)
Ge Force FX 5500
If more info is needed... let me know what you need...

Just a note... or another question....
when i purchased the ge force fx recently... i was told the first trip to the store that my computer could only handle the ge force fx 5200 PCI.
I called customer support and told them this...
they wanted to know if i removed my old video card from an AGP slot why would i get a PCI card and not another AGP...?? So i got a 5500 AGP card at his recommendation.
Can my system even handle this card???
Is this the problem??? ( among others i'm sure.... heh hee )
Thanks again.

There are two things I see, the processor is 440 Mhz, which is not even enough for games made in 2001. And since a video card needs decent processor to work correctly, your new video card will be very useless unless you get a lot faster processor, at least 1.4 Ghz.

In summary, upgrading the processor will fix all of your problems with games. And you will need new motherboard since Pentium 3 type of processors are not available faster than 766 Mhz as far as I know.

I recommend buying a new system, and do not buy a logo like Compaq, Dell or Alienware. Logos are always trying to take every cent away from you. You should buy each hardware part seperate and then find a service that can put them into a computer for you.
