Hello everyone
I did a search and could not locate a solution to my problem.
My Painkiller game is waaay too fast. Keep in mind that I just finished FEAR, COT2, etc.... All ran well. I have everything running at max settings at 1280x768 yet I really need to slow this game down. This game is running as if it is in Turbo mode. I only ran into this once loooong ago with another game. So where in a config file can I slow things down?
thanks
Lee

Its a known bug just dissable one CPU in the taskmanager or

Yes, it's a well known bug of the AMD Dualcore.
The tool you'll find here:

You can also use a system command to add info to use only 1 CPU to the windows header of the EXE file for Painkiller.

The system command is custom made btw. You can search for it on google, it is named ImageCfg. Itīs free and very useful if dualcore or hyperthreating causes trouble.

I might have to look into this as I'm now blessed with a dual-core FX-60 and although the timedemo c5l2 displays 253fps @1280x1024 (everything maxed out) it seems choppy. Initially I thought it was caused by heat (I'm overclocking it a tad) but it seems like Painkiller doesn't really like working with 2 cores. I'll have another look with one of the cores disabled.

That canīt be lag because the game goes to slow motion instead of slideshow, if the game feels like a fast slideshow, then it could be caused by dualcores.

...and btw PK isn't the only one game that shows this software bug of the AMD dualcore - UT and others too.

Yup, and old games like System Shock 2 that use the Dark Engine will freeze up shortly after starting a level.

It only happens with DualCore and HyperThreating Technology.

A quick update... initially I used the standard AMD Athlon 64 driver as I was simply going from a 4000+ to the FX-60. As the FX-60 is dual-core, I tried the AMD Athlon X2 driver but was experiencing HAL & kernel errors when Windows XP was booting. I then assumed that the X2 driver was at fault and reverted to a restore point where my AMD Athlon 64 driver was last installed and all seemed to run fine. It was at this point when I was testing (or trying to play) Painkiller and experienced the choppy effect.

Since then I have spoken with the author of the FX-60 review on "The Guru of 3D" (Hilbert) and found out he was happily using the X2 driver during his review. Then (as it turned, rightfully) I came to conclusion that my X2 driver must have been corrupted, so I re-downloaded and installed it this morning.

The outcome -- all is back to normal and running both cores yields about a 12FPS increase (@1280x1024 with the settings maxed out) over having one core disabled (though the "Affinity" option in Windows Task Manager). This could be down to the dual-core support in the nVidia driver but I only disabled the core for a single program, not the system so who knows?

It can be useful to have two cores if you are a program geek.
Run WinAmp, explorer.exe, the system tasks and other things on one core, and the game on the other.
