Hi everyone,

I just bought my friends copy of painkiller and tried to install it recently and I get this error about 2 minutes into the install. Does anybody know how to go about fixing something like this? I played the demo ages ago and would love to get the chance to play the rest of the game. The error message is listed below.

---------------------------
InstallFiles()
---------------------------
Error while decompressing file E:\Program Files\DreamCatcher\Painkiller\Data\Movies\end_of_c hapter_1.bik, err = -10
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

Clicking Ok then brings up an Installation failed message and the install stops.

Thanks for the help.

This is a common problem, because the install software Painkiller uses plain sucks.

There is a method that I used, if you have the 3 CD version that is. You simply find an empty CD (you should use rewritable one), and burn the disc where the installation is failing at and then use the newly burned CD instead of the default one.

But of course this can be a simple as scratches or dirt on the read face of the disc. So check that before doing the hassle above.

Thanks for the help, that did it. What I ened up doing was just ripping the files to an ISO and then mounted the ISO image and it appears to be working.

Unfortunately I can't seem to load the game now as it looks like it's looking in the wrong place or something.

---------------------------
Cannot locate the CD-ROM
---------------------------
Please insert the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart application
---------------------------
OK

AAAAGH!

Whoops, false alarm. I just downloaded and installed the 1.61 update and it looks like that fixed the problems.

Thanks for your help in the first place though.

You probably had the wrong disc in the drive, in version 1.0 you needed CD3, but the 1.61 patch changes the requirement to CD1.

Have fun playing. :)

Btw, if you donīt want the need to have the CD in the drive, I suggest megagames, a clean website with cracks for many many games. But avoid clicking the popups, thatīs my only warning.
(cracks arenīt illegal according to the EULA btw)

Ok, I just recently had a new processor and motherboard placed in my computer. The processor is an AMD Sempron 2600. I don't have the compression error message. On my install it gets to the point of end of chapter 4, then an error message pops up stating install unsuccesful. I read where you burn the disc where it has failed. How, since on the cd it only shows three files. And I tried burning the entire cd every way imaginable, even ISO, would not do it. Oh, and the Processor is the new 64 bit. I have also disabled the physical address extension like it suggests from AMD.com. Any thoughts???

If you canīt burn the disc, the disc itself is faulty, not the installation software.

If you can't copy your CD to HDD (try it) then you can try this only on another system with a different CD-player. The failure correction of CD-players works very different and therefore you could have a chance with your CD... (if you can copy - make an image and mount it with Daemon-tools)

Found this out from the tech that put in my processor and motherboard. The problem is in the new processor. The company had put spyware on the cd, and with the new security features that are in the new 64 bit processors it will not let the cd run because of the spyware. This straight from DreamCatcher. They are aware of the problem and are working on a patch. But, since he could not install the game I have on a 32 bit system, I most likely have a bad cd. Darn it. anyway, I was wanting to get the Booh addition anyway. So now I just will purchase the whole set. Thanx for the info guys. Later

The company had put spyware on the cd, and with the new security features that are in the new 64 bit processors it will not let the cd run because of the spyware. The security feature SaleenS7 might be referring to (if talking AMD) is called "Enhanced Virus Protection". This feature is designed to monitor things like buffer under-runs and memory being accessed outside specific execution boundaries of a program. This feature is supported by the 32-bit Windows XP so long as SP2 is installed.

Below is the AMD blurb on the subject:

Source: http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_9485_9488%5E9495,00.html Enhanced Virus Protection for WindowsŪ XP SP2
Enhanced Virus Protection enabled by Windows XP SP2 is designed to prevent the spread of certain viruses, like MSBlaster and Slammer, significantly reducing the cost and down-time associated with similar viruses and improving the protection of computers and personal information against certain PC viruses.*

* Enhanced Virus Protection will by default only protect the user's Windows operating system. After properly installing the appropriate Windows release, users must enable the protection of their applications and associated files from memory buffer overrun attacks. Contact your application software vendor for information regarding use of the application in conjunction with Enhanced Virus Protection. AMD and Microsoft strongly recommend that users continue to use third party anti-virus software as part of their security strategy. And frankly, I doubt a reputable software house would be place spyware on a distribution disk without:
Informing the end user during the installation process that a third-party piece of software was about to be installed, and
Providing an "opt-out" option to skip the said installation process of the third-party software.

I am not so sure, if you remember Sony just got into a big court battle over putting spyware on their music CD's.

You would think that they would notify the consumer, but who knows what those big company's intentions really are.

I was just thinking, if the cd is bad would I be able to create a backup to the hard drive using the backup utility in Nero 6. I have done this.

I thought the Sony fiasco was a "root kit" (to aid in protecting intellectual rights) that could possibly interfered with the normal operation of the user's PC, not spyware. The back-flip was a result of the software causing problems, not because it was spyware.

...able to create a backup to the hard drive using the backup utility in Nero 6. I have done this.If what you said us true regarding the Painkiller CD, wouldn't you think that when you "burnt" it, you would have carried the spyware across in the image? My thoughts would that spyware would be integrated into the installation program rather than a seperate spawned program when the disk executed its "autorun". Come to think about it, have a look at the "autorun.inf" on the first disk... If it were spawning spyware, it'd have be listed in there if it isn't part of the installation program.
