View Full Version : Painkiller Black - serious problem
Painkiller just won't start. I've updated my DirectX, my video card drivers, I've patched the game to 1.62 (downloading the update for 1.64), and everything I try won't work. Effectively what happens is that the painkiller.exe process starts, then stops after about 2 seconds. Nothing happens onscreen apart from getting the mouse icon that has the hourglass as well as the normal cursor. Can anyone help? I've tried closing all programs such as Daemon Tools, etc.
Also, I tried opening the program if the disc is out of the drive - I get the 'insert disk' error. If the disk is IN, then there is no error. I tried mounting an image of the disc in Daemon Tools and working from there but that didn't work either, same thing happened.
Edit:
My computer specs are well above par, so theres nothing at fault there:
Athlon64 3700+
Radeon x850 XT PE
1 gig RAM
NEX cd/DVD combo drive (it's not on the list of faulty drives for the game, so I assume it's fine.)

I guess "you" were blocked by a Firewall (Norton or the nVidia-Hardware-Firewall) For the least you have to deinstall all drivers.

When you run the game, try running it again, if it displays an "Already running" window, then this is most likely a firewall blocking the boot of Painkiller.exe as Varus said above.
Try disable the firewall and see what happens.

Greets,
Just got the game yesterday, installed last night, had the same issue as lewi, so decided to shut off the firewall, reinstall, and update to 1.6.4. Same problem seems to be happening, just get the hourglass cursor.
I've got:
Win 2000 Pro SP4
AMD Athlon 64 4000+
1g Ram
DX 9.0c
GeForce 7800 GTX
Lite-On DVDRW

Maybe U missed the 1.61 patch.
To run 1.64 U have to install 3 patches:
- 1.61
- 1.62
- 1.64

Already did..... got 1.61, 1.62, and 1.64 from my work, burnt it to a CD-R, and when I got home I copied them to my desktop and ran the programs.

What motherboards are each of you using? I agree with Bjossi and and Varus; it sounds like an nVidia firewall issue.

Game's original, bought from Best Buy, not broken, had already tried shutting off the firewall after the first time (it asked me if I wanted to allow it, I said yes, and it didn't work so I tried it with the firewall disabled with no difference.), motherboard's a DFI Lanparty (yes, that's got NVidia crap on it.).

For the nVidia-firewall: you've to DEINSTALL all software related to this firewall. (not only disable)

For what it's worth - I've always just used the XP 'wall, and never had a problem.

Lol!
But I have always loved everything about the Panda Titanium firewall, especially the 2006 version, with automatic updates. That thing crushes every single spyware and/or viruses that try to sneak in.

Yep, 'twas the bloody firewall. Why it does that, I don't quite understand ('specially when it's disabled 'n all), but the game works now so I don't mind too much.
Thanks for the help, seeya ingame.
