View Full Version : What "details" have been added to DLCE?

As much as I hate to say it, my curiosity is getting the best of me. I bought DL when it first came out, and after a week a friend of mine over at the EB I bought it from did me a favor, and let me return it for full price. I've recently gotten the opportunity to get DLCE for next to nothing (20$). On top of that my hack n' slash obsessive item collecting bug is starting to bite again (yes, I've played Morrowind, Gothic 2, Sacred, Diablo, etc.). As petty as some of these things seem, there are a few aspects to the original DL that really bugged me, as they showed a complete lack of consideration for the games presentation. I DID however find the combat extremely entertaining....just grew fed up with all the 'meh' I found here and there.
So, anyway, I'm wondering these things about the CE:
1. do the options finally work?
2. are the class requirements fixed?
3. there was a quest, were you needed to help a shopkeepers sick husband. in the back of her store, her 'sick' husband was just standing in the corner like a manakin, with NOTHING in the room around him. That really killed the game, and was one of the final blows (in addition to the ghost town known as Arindale) causing me to return the game. Please tell me SOME fleshing out has been done in this manner.

1. What options are you referring to? If you're referring to character customization, that has been addressed in the 1.4 patch as well as the CE. Although, in my opinion the customizations are lacking.
2. Class requirements were addressed in the 1.4 patch as well as the CE. As far as I know, they all work properly now.
3. Arindale is still a barren wasteland in the 1.4 patch, from what I've heard this has been addressed in the CE. I was truly hoping that, at the very least, the 1.4 patch would add a working fireplace but alas wishful thinking.

If you mean game options like mouse control, view distance etc then the ones I've messed with work.
Furnishings have been added to Arindale but there are no more towns folks wandering around. In Skuldoon there are town folks wandering around but like in Fargrove you can't interact with them. There are a few more NPC's added to the game which give side quest. D

Details... hmmm. In my opinion, this game is seriously lacking in details. I guess the shiny new box will justify the purchase for some.

Have you played what's in the shiny new box yet?

It's a shame that DC released the game like they did.
It would be nice to be able to talk about the CE instead of it always turning into how crappy the first version was.
I understand that people who bought the first game feel screwed and I don't blame them.
But, how long are we going to talk about the same thing over and over? Whenever anyone starts talking about the CE the thread gets hijacked into a DC screwed us thread.
Oh, well I guess everyone is just too ticked off!!
Just for the record, I have both versions, so I feel like most of you do. My wife suprised me with the CE for Valentines day and to be honest I am glad she did. Fun game.

I just like to sit back and watch everyone strip their gears instead of using what brainpower they have to find a copy of 1.5 and actually play it.

I guess if you feel that using brainpower involves paying AGAIN for a game that I purchased months ago and should have been fixed long before now, then I must be an idiot.

As long as it takes.

Waiting for a torrent, but then when nobody actually buys the game or they do and toss it in the trash, nobody will share it LOL...
Just kidding, I don't advocate piracy at all, though these buggers deserve it.

I wonder if DC is doing this because they are such a small company? Probably who knows! Could you imagine if EA did something like this?

The last time I remember somethign so bad being released was Ultima IX I think. Even the demos wouldn't run. Just terrible. I pine for the old days when you bought Wizardry 1 and it worked unless your floppies got wrecked, but then it was easy enough to make a copy too...

YES Ultima IX... we all remember that demo... I remember watching my father try and play the complete game. (very sad)
Many gaming companies have delays or incomplete work because the developers focus on making "pretty" 3D graphics instead of adding quality, balance and content. Heroes_IV was another example of this poor thinking.

Actually Heroes IV was pretty good, once it was finished. Too bad you had to buy the expansion Paks for it to be done. Again another game that was pushed out early before it was done.

The Heroes_IV game really needed an overhaul... I remember lots of unbalanced issues like the genies. Young heroes frequently dying, fewer monsters than Heroes_III, smaller battle map, no more unique heroes, unbalanced spells, ... and that's just what I remember.
Sadly enough Heroes_V has even smaller battle maps. :(

One big thing I noticed right away is when you're wandering the countryside, approach to buildings and structures has a tremendous upslope.

I would never call you an idiot because I've seen the idiots who post here. If you were to compare yourself to them then you'd actually be the smartest idiot here.

Do you also remember the solution to the Ultima 9 debacle? They sent every registered owner a new CD with the fixed game for free, along with a copy of Ultima Online as well. Not downloads even--they ate the expense and mailed them out.
Keep in mind that Wizardy 1 was a mere 10k lines of Pascal code. It's a lot easier to create bug free code when the project is so simple. And by today's standards, The Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord would be considered a training exercise for serious programmers. We demand so much more from our games these days that most people would reject out of hand anything resembling a '90s game, let alone something from the '80s.
Not that any of that excuses shipping a game that was fundamentally unfinished.

aint no shame in buying that game when it came out... I bought it and suffered as well. Ultima used to rule so much... the only shame in that game falls squarely on the shoulders of the publisher.

Ultima bit the dust for me when Pagan came out. UGH. What a load of horsecra* that was.

Yeah. I loved the Ultima series until Origin went brain dead and decided not to listen to their fans. Ultima 6 was the last turn based Ultima game. From Ultima 7 on Origin began to leave their fan base behind. Not to say that I did not somewhat enjoy 7 and 8 but not as much as the previous games.
Then came their masterpiece of a disaster, Ascension.
There is much to be learned from Origin's downfall. Unfortunately history repeats itself because fools don't learn from the mistakes of others.

The Black Gate and Serpent Isle (7) is considered one of the best in the series. Ultima IV is the most popular.
I think the franchise went downhill with 8 when they tried to reach more people by turning an RPG into a platform jumper action game. You notice they used the same game engine for an action game called "Crusader: No Remorse" which was actually successful.
This is the problem with a lot of RPGs today. They go from turn based to the "Xbox generation platform jumpers" and to me, that's not a role playing game. It's an action adventure.
Ultima 9: Ascension was as big of a debacle when it came out as Dungeon Lords. It was horrible and loyal fans were pissed. How could Richard Garriott sell out to EA like that? EA totally bent him over and they are still riding the Ultima Online gravytrain.
