In the npcdata.pak file, there's conversation with someone that has to do with becoming a shadow lord. You're supposed to take the shadow amulet to lost lake and wait at the shrine. When the enemy shows up, you defeat it and report back to the same person and you become a shadow lord. Evidently it's in the game, but what class/heraldry and npc sets it off?

NOT lost lake but Isle of The Damned
Strictly as a matter of interest, the shadow lord amulet hex is AB03

on Gamebanshee, it says u must defeat Nausol-what's his name in the shadow ruins, then return to Staroxia who offers you the ascension quest. However, it also says her dialogue is broken and so the quest is never offered.

No, the quest is not broken. After defeating the nausoleum, be certain to pick up everything he drops. Then in inventory, identify the jewelry, which turns out to be the shadow amulet.
Then you can ask staroxia about it. If strength, intelligence, dexterity, agility, and vitality are 40 each
and light weapons, parry, arcane, nether, and athletics are at least 8, Staroxia will send you back to the island of the damned to fight.
The only thing that would prevent proper dialogue from staroxia, in one of the files with her dialogue listed, the shadow lords options are missing an @ in front of each of those two listings. All my files have proper words and characters. I don't know exactly what class or character can get the quest, but it doesn't seem critical as long as your stats are high enough.

Cool...but I'm not really much of a computer science guy...soooo...what you're saying is...it's possible to get the class? By the way, I don't have the CE. Certainly wouldn't mind playing it, but I'm not paying another $40.
On game banshee, it didn't mention any particular class tree that you had to follow. It said as long as you have your third tier class slot available, u could get the quest.
George, if you get it somehow, could u post some info? I'd like to know what kind of heraldry comes with it.

Heraldry? OOHHH, don't have any, maybe that's why the Shadow Lord icon at top of panel is grayed out. I probably did something out of sequence. Next time through, I'll walk on egg shells till after the SL quest.
Anyhow, I started out as a rogue and worked up to Budoka and master heraldry, etc.

I think it's supposed to be gray (shadow!). Anyhow, I don't have the Shadow Lord invoke icon in that section, probably because I already have the Levitation spell (by hexing). Guess that explains why Staroxia says I already have certain powers. D**N!
The next time through, I'll work up to that point without altering anything. I've done it before without fooling with the save. I just wanted to see the consequences. I sure found out the long hard way around. :(

Did you get the quest to go back to the shadow altar to fight the undead dragon? Once you kill him (and a fun fight that is--make sure you have lots of Wards of Ice) return to Staroxia to activate the class.
I developed a character legit to get the class and had no joy. I eventually had to resort to a couple of quest hacks to get around some broken dialog from Staroxia before she'd recognise that I had the shadow amulet. Once I did that things progressed normally.
Sadly in my opinion the class blows. The Shadow Lord skill is sort of nice but lasts a short time and has a long recharge at ten points of skill (~3m advancement points for that much if I recall correctly.) Give me spell fire or iron will anytime over that.

I did everything necessary, but as I said I already had some levitation crystals and staroxia didn't activate the class because she said my character already had some of the relevent powers.

Levitation crystals shouldn't have made any difference. The npc code does do item checks (relevant here are the shadow amulet and the shadow gem). Interestingly enough, there is a global-scope "partyhaveitem" check that makes me wonder if things would work properly in multiplayer.
I really wish HP would release some tools for modding purposes. Trying to make sense out of the uncompiled data can be frustrating without the tools to test ones hypothesises. If partyhaveitem only applies to multiplayer games, the bug makes sense as I understand it. If it applies to both single and multiplayer, I'm still left trying to figure out what's wrong.

Started a new game as Adept, then got up to Adept/Rogue/Monk and became Shadow Lord also, with 4th slot open. One big advantage of invoking the SL is all but the most powerful enemies don't seem to do much damage, as if their weapons pass right through the Shadow Lord!
