View Full Version : Dead Sity. Lamp path to 1st secret.
Do you know 1st secret at the level? When barrels exploding while you walking to gold artefact. There is another way to it.
Here is a vid-clip to show you the way:
Dead Sity. First secret - lamp path. (http://rapidshare.de/files/30403974/dSfs003.avi)
clip info
hoster: Rapidshare
total time: 13sec
file size: 5,5Mb
quality: good
author: (i saw it first by) AlexDoomer
codec: xvid
(framerate while compressing from 45 to 60 fps - to achieve original gameplay smoothness)
the way features:
- you can climb the lamp up only after you kill all monsters on level. I think it is script prog that controling the lamp-post. The script allows you go up only after all monsters are dead and final teleport is flashing.
The way was mentioned on rus Pk forum PG by gamer AlexDoomer.

Totally unecessary and too time consuming IMO. It's fairly easy to just hop along the ledge on the outter side of the balcony then jump in where the Holy is.

Well maybe the jumping isn't so easy for everyone.
Nice new find definetly :)

Cool :) But since i'm a bit masochistic i prefer getting burnt by the flames when getting that secret :Р Kinda gives me the feeling i earned it you know :D

This is a sweet little thing, a very-very nice find indeed. I myself was totally surprised when I first saw it! I've never ever tried to climb that pole and I've never thought that it even may be climbable. I thought there's only one obvious way for getting that Secret. And the funny thing is that I wasn't alone: I think none of us ever tried to climb that pole. And then again, two Russian players - AlexDoomer & Pool - show us this way! Why I didn't think of this earlier?! When I first saw the video, I really felt I just missed something from the game with never discovering and trying out this method. Very nice! I will try this out during my next BOOH-completion for sure...
As I said, it's just a very little find, but still so nice, and I'm smiling, because Pool informs us about it almost 2 years after BOOH was released. Most of us here are already heavyweight PK-hunters who completed the games (PK+BOOH) many times, and most of us may think that "oh, there's really nothing new to discover today in PK" - WRONG! :D This amuses me. The game still shows us new things...
I myself think that this was the originally intended way by the creators anyway. Maybe they should've been set the burning fires to cause instant death and that would've been made it more interesting. But for me, this is still very interesting and even exciting. Why? I have at least two reasons...
The first is the backtracking to the beginning of the level. This thing always bugged me. Most of You know that I'm a 5-star maniac who always finishes the levels with getting all 5 stars. Now "Dead City" was always bugging me a bit: because I didn't know that it was possible to backtrack to the beginning, so I had to be careful with finding and destroying everything there. But from now, I can forget anything there, I still can return to there with no problem, with this method... And there's one more thing what is maybe more interesting: there's an "invisible wall" bug there too and Pool also made a video about that anyway. I remember, months ago He asked me about that: "do you know the invisible wall on Dead City" - something like that. I had no idea, although I thought that He means right the beginning. But I had no idea about how He got back there. I thought He used PM's "no clip" feature. I was wrong - "my ignorance amuses me"... ;)
The second reason is just an interesting one, not really a big deal. With knowing this method, it's possible to finish Dead City with "no scratch" and also with collecting all the Secrets (and maybe even with 5-stars?!). Okay, maybe it's possible to avoid the flames too with no scratch and getting the Secret, but with this method, it's much easier (it makes even more sense from the 5-stars aspect, if that's possible). Again, this is really not a big deal, I just thought of it...
All in all, this new method made me think of some things as You see, but it's very interesting for sure. I don't mind if a Secret-method is let's say "time consuming" (I see no time-consuming issue with this though), what really matters is the new method itself! I like to know more and more methods for each Secrets, and it's interesting to try them all or at least most of them out...
Thanks for the sharing Pool and AlexDoomer!

Pool, the video is very good... ;) what is the video codec and with that program has been made...

I've made raw video using fraps. At 60 fps. 640x480
I've compressed it using VirtualDub Mod and xvid codec.
some of xvid codec settings:
1. two passes
2. bitrate 3000
3. framerate while compressing was original sourse framerate - 60 fps(VirtualDub Mod setting). :)

:) if on this way then that way:

;)
...because only you have the other possibility - you know what you did...:)
oh - BTW - very nice finding like SYS mentioned before...totally agree
A, Resident Pain was compressed by PainkillerDark. Not me. :)
Now i am searching for optimal codec to compress vids. I am trying different codecs. For example, the Lamp path vid comes like that:
http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/7499/untitled01jr5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
so it is 3ivx. :) (who may thought of it :D)
The Invisible Wall vid which i've sent to SYS comes like that:

I've set FourCC to DX50 to compatibility to many players.

What do you think 60fps better than 30 fps? Or it is only wast of time and file size?

Maybe 60fps for better source but for the compressed movie 30fps are enough at least.
The rest is the old question, depending on many things: HighQuality is needed? or is the target streaming content? and so on.
For HQ there are many codecs useful but for high-compressed versions, for streaming or only low file size (modem...) the best codec is wmv (quality ~90%).
The differences for quality, related to different codecs, becomes much more visible per higher compressions you're have to use.
That's the same as for WMA. Based on the same quality (sampling and bit rate) the wma-codec needs only half of file size than the mp3-file.
And btw...a great part of a movie file size is related to the audio codec !!! if you have to dramatically reduce the file size it becomes more and more important

I've tried doing some compressions with Xvid using VirtualDub, which can produce nice results, but I got tired of not being able to make titles & credits and add background music, transitions and effects. Supposedly VDub Mod is capable of merging background audio with video, but I've never been able to get it to do that. I CAN, however, view the Xvid movies I've made in Windows Media Player, yours I cannot, I only get sound. Thus I can only guess at the video quality given the specs you've mentioned.
Lately I've been running the source clips through VirtualDub to add contrast, sharpen & Lanczos3 resizing before compressing them in Movie Maker. The results are pretty good and I'm also able to run moderate bit rates with this method (about 1900-2100kbps) which helps keep the file siz down. I stick with 576x432 resolution for the most part, the capture being 512x384 via Game Cam and it's Smart Capture setting. With Game Cam the source clips are also pretty small in file size, which is extremely beneficial.
