View Full Version : Games like Painkiller?

I play many first-person shooters on the PC (it's my genre, what can I say), but for whatever reason passed up Painkiller when it was released. However, I picked it up the Black edition about a week ago, and love it. I've played through the original and the expansion, and I love the classic FPS action (just as I loved Quake all those years ago). It's really an amazing game (it seems like a lot of the good FPSs recently are made by nobody companies). Not too fond of the multiplayer, but that's another story.
However, I haven't played many games like it. With the exception of Quake, Painkiller-style games seem to be non-existence. So, like the thread titles says, I was wondering if there are any other games out like single-player Painkiller. I played Serious Sam II and hated it (I've yet to play First and Second Encounters, but plan to), so that's out. Any others that are like Painkiller? I'm craving for some more action like it, however I don't enjoy replaying games right after I beat them.

Well, for old school, there's Doom and Doom 2.
But what is it that you like specifically about Painkiller? The gameplay (you vs. hundreds/thousands of enemies per level)? The setting (dark, creepy, gothic etc)?
I'd recommend Serious Sam: The First Encounter and Second Encounter (both available as one title for xbox simply titled "Serious Sam"... and as of this month, added to the x360 backward compatibility list). Not dark or gothic, but the gameplay is there along with the huge bosses. It's a more humorous approach to the run and gun, waves of enemies gameplay, but well worth it as if you can find it, it's probably $10-20 at most for both episodes. Serious Sam 2 (also available on xbox) is a bit more cartoony, and in my opinion, not as good as the 1st/2nd encounters or Painkiller, but you've played this one already so you know that.
There's another game I know everyone mentions, but for the life of me I can't remember what it's called. Gore? I've never played it, but if I recall, it's the same gameplay (waves of mindless enemies).

Actually....haha I bet you never played Blood (1997) or Quake (original) PK has elements of both which is kinda sad.....PK isn't very original compared to Blood....but it is still a good game.

I've mentioned this in "Off Topic" in response to a similar question. If you like collecting secrets, finding shortcuts and replaying at various difficulty levels, I highly recommenf "SiN Episodes:Emergence". I thoroughly enjoyed it. As an "episode" it's short but it's also cheap, if you want to try it. However, if it's PK's mad weapons and endless enemies you like, it may not be for you.
... bet you never played Blood (1997) ...
"Blood" (not the unplayable "Blood 2:The Chosen") was a great game that I'm sure would be as funny today, though its graphics will have aged. Any game that encourages you to shoot completely innocent mimes, just because they're annoying, can't be all bad :D . If you can find a copy and a way to run it (I think it was DOS), try it.
Meanwhile, you can join us in the, possibly futile, wait for PK2 :(

I have a site with the full copy of Blood and a way to run with with the only problem being minor sound crackles. Yes I do Have XP and I think, for its time, the graphics are great. I'm still waiting on PK2..........

Quake!!!!
This game made me a PC GAMER (thanks to my wife bringing home the shareware-she has been kicking herself ever sents )
Quake 1 was soooo much fun but quake 2 miss the mark. Painkiller gave me a harm fizzy bloody feeling inside.

hehe, I sure do miss the days of BBS'ing Doom2. I sucked back then, and still suck, but man playing doom2 DM till 2am then realizing I hadn't done my homework and needed sleep... those were the days!
Now, I have no patience for multiplayer. I'm lucky to play one map a week w/o wanting to throw my keyboard/mouse across the room :)

Well, I've played all the games listed here except Blood and the first two Serious Sam games. I'll be sure to try those out. However, I don't think any of them are quite as good as Painkiller. It has the perfect balance of skill, difficulty, secrets/replay, movement, weapons, et cetera. It's just a very well polished game. The engine not so much in some cases, but not everything can be perfect. :P

I played a lot of games too. I'm from those old days and I played Doom series, Quake series, Heretic, Hexen, Blood and other games. But I don't find anything similar in Painkiller. I 5-stared it on Trauma about half a year ago and then uninstalled it because I didn't have what else to do in the game. But now I miss Painkiller. I still try different games and haven't seen anything similar. I think that is not atmosphere, what attracts players. Not the number of enemies. I think the game is so great because of his secrets, innovations like demon morph, tarot cards and etc., and maybe control. I like that crazy bunnyhoping on the walls a lot. I wonder, when i found in these forums, that there was another way to reach secret, because half a year ago I thought that it is all known about Painkiller. Now I think that this game doesn't have end. I apologize for my bad english.

Maybe, I expect best from "NecroVisioN", but I saw "You are empty" video and it looks like simple FPS with very good graphics to me.

I recommend Serious Sam First and Second encounters. Don't be turned off by old graphics. It actually looks very good. Textures and overall design is great.
Actually, Painkiller is the game that made me love nobrainers, i.e. games with lots of enemies to kill. After completeting the Painkiller, I played Serious Sam 2 and then First and Second encounter. I loved them all. I dont know why many people have beef with SS2. I thought it was a great shooter with funny humor. :D

I think Blood was a lot like Painkiller, mostly because of the monsters and the general atmosphere. The main difference is that it wasn't as "serious" as Painkiller, and obviously the ancient game engine and graphics. In one of my first posts on these forums some time ago, I said that that's how Blood 2 should have been (like Painkiller). But I wouldn't recommend Blood to anyone who's never played such an old game before, because they'd never get used to the control scheme and the graphics (plus, you have to jump through some hoops to even get it to run on XP).
BTW, the "GTA Somalia" is hilarious. :)

Oh, graphically the engine is fantastic (it has held up all of these years). But stability and the such could be worked on. :P
